Central Ohio Regional Issues Forum Charter

The Central Ohio Regional Issues Forum (CORIF) is a place on the web where you can discuss the regional issues that matter to you. It is a place where people living in Central Ohio come together to exchange ideas, opinions, and information. Topics that you might find here to discuss will reflect the opportunities and challenges that face Central Ohio on a regional basis.

Purpose

The purpose of the Central Ohio Regional Issues Forum is to have a space for Central Ohio citizens to exchange ideas, opinions and information.

Goals

The goals of Central Ohio Regional Issues Forum are:

  • This forum is about open exchange and information sharing and not about being right with one's ideology. Attempts to "win" an online discussion are discouraged and inappropriate discussions or statements will not be tolerated. Because this is a forum for everybody, discussions should be civil and respectful of the views of others. All participants, whatever their job or position, are viewed as "citizens." Everyone who participates does so on an equal footing, with no special obligations or responsibilities. This is our space, a citizen space. CORIF is designed to be as open, inclusive, and "safe" a space as possible for people to express what is most on their minds. Accordingly, the forum will focus exclusively on ideas and issues, not individuals. Official bodies and civic organizations are highly encouraged to send meeting announcements, agendas, and information on new online resources in text format to the forum.
  • Participants may expect that municipal councils and government officials throughout Central Ohio, as well as members of the media and other local and regional organizations, will be looking at what we do. The views you share could well make a difference in shaping the region's public policy agenda and the views of your fellow citizens and their official representatives in resolving the issues we face.
  • This regional forum welcomes and encourages a diversity of opinions and backgrounds. General discussions outside the charter scope, however, should be taken to other online forums that are more appropriate for their subject matter.

Typical Topics

Topics that you might find here to discuss include:

  • Energy and environmental issues including water quality, air quality, greenways, and energy efficiency.
  • Transportation and infrastructure planning and funding.
  • Economic development and land use planning.
  • Housing issues including foreclosure, homeownership counseling, and residential rehabilitation.
  • Public policy issues of regional significance.
  • Stories in local and regional newspapers, radio, TV, and other media.

Who runs this Forum?

This forum was launched through a partnership of the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), the Project on Law and Democratic Development of The Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law, and the Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Affairs. It embodies a shared commitment to pursue the use of new media to expand public opportunities to participate meaningfully in civic affairs. For over 60 years, MORPC has been addressing challenges and opportunities associated with growth and development in Central Ohio as well as working with its members to improve the quality of life within the region. MORPC expects that public input elicited through this forum will help it, as well as other organizations, to work for the overall improvement of the region. Views expressed through the forum are exclusively the views of the individual forum participants and do not represent the views of any of the sponsoring organizations. The Central Ohio Regional Issues Forum will be managed through a volunteer steering committee that selects the forum manager(s) who helps facilitate the forum and administer the rules. You may contact the forum manager via the online comment form. E-Democracy.Org is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, citizen-based initiative launched in 1994. We chose E-Democracy.org to host the Central Ohio Regional Issues Forum because of its commitment to building stronger democracy through the power of information and communication technologies and strategies, and its track record of success in hosting community forums both in the United States and abroad.
