Here's something else which has to be done.
This testing is in its somewhat exploratory stage, I believe, at
Canterbury Health Laboratories at teh Chch Hospital. In return for a
doctors prescription and 5 ml of a person's blood they can determine the
ALDH2 gene. A notice has to be made to put on your bus. But first how
about some people from this group (who may be going for a blood test
anyway) ask their doctor for this test, too, and report back experiences.
For those short of the normal gene they may be allowed to wear a badge
indicating that in the drinking contests they can be allowed a handicap.

The Japanese aparently have been working on a test where you only have
to have some mucosal cells from inside the mouth.

Combinations of CAG and ALDH2*1/2*2 showed greater risks of gastric
carcinoma (OR(s) = 4.0 for non-severe CAG alone, 17.6 for severe CAG
alone, 9.7 for ALDH2*1/2*2 alone,...
Though you would not yet know from that whether the alcoholism following
from lack of ALDH2 is causing the cancer rather than just the lack of
the gene?

It's amazing isn't it?
A few months ago someone wrote in "The Press" that we need more housing
in the central city to increase the number of people about to reduce the
chance of violent attacks. They must not have realised what huge numbers
are there already.
Once when I was going to be taking some people through the city at night
one of them asked me as she got in whether I wanted the car doors
locked. I did not think at the time but I surmised later that maybe
people may try to open car doors and maybe get in at the traffic lights,
if not snatch things out.
So anything you can do, Tim...

Brian,
I really do have trouble understanding the points you try to make. However,
I believe you are suggesting there is a recognisable gene that indicates a
certain reaction to alcohol. (I have vaguely heard about this many years
ago - in particular it purportedly indicated many Japanese have this gene
marker...)
But getting a bunch of crapulent, merry-making celebrators to listen to
simple things like "No alcohol to be taken off the bus..." or "No fiddling
with the back door..." And then you want me to ask them to read - READ! - a
sign? Hic?
Anyway, I don't drive booze buses very often - as I pointed out in my
original response to Brenda Dew's observation about hanging on in the aisle
with one hand while drinking with the other....
And as I pointed out to Tom,. I do not willingly do it....
Maybe you could arrange to go on a few booze bus tours and explain what you
want to achieve to the passengers in person.
Are you setting up a research project? If you are, I could help arrange and
recruit a sample. That is what I do.
Cheers,
Tim Kerr
