Lots of people and lots of cops and lots of motor vehicle traffic will be
around for the RNC. A large part of the expense for a 3000+ RNC police force
will be for dealing with the traffic. Will Metro Transit help alleviate the
traffic and police problem by providing free service during the RNC, or will it
be business as usual?

Great suggestion Sheldon.
But one question, why should they provide free service? I would suggest that
maybe a shuttle around St. Paul or within the downtown limits. After all that
is the only place traffic will be difficult.
The Twin Cities have had larger conventions in town before and there wasn't
even a need to for additional peace officers. So why now?
Because of who is coming to town. Its not because of the number.
Most of those coming to town will be press. Another large group will be
protesters. The smallest group will be the delegates and Republican officials.

Having free transit on MTC busses that go into and out of Downtown Saint Paul
would be a nice accommodation to Downtown commuters and residents, particularly
in light of the 14 parking ramps that will be closing for the term of the RNC.
PLAN: Get a letter from employers that certifies that they are employed
downtown, or proof of Downtown residency and the MTC issues them a bus pass
good for the term of the convention. Not only is it going to be hard to find
parking for workers, it is going to be a pain to get in and out of residential
ramps during the convention, e.g., Citywalk's ramp entrance is 100 feet from
the corner of 7th and Cedar.
Lest I be accused of serving my personal interest with this notion, I will be
1,500 miles from here during the entire run of the RNC.

Regardless of whether or not the motor vehicle traffic is generated by
delegates, press, protesters, Republican officials, residents or employees, the
fact is that there will be a major amount of police work involved in dealing
with it. It was be a lot easier and less costly to manage busloads of
passengers than loads of relatively low occupancy vehicles. Free public
transit service would make it a lot easier for everyone to get around by
reducing traffic and increasing accessibility to
the service.
