Basically, any business takes a risk in dealing with political entities. This
year, the Republican political party entities have been particularly short on
fundraising and had a number of financial scandals(I am not digressing in
details to stay on St Paul focus). So I ask you all to let our local businesses
know about this. Ask for payment before services are given or goods are
delivered. Or at least, let the businesses take a knowledgeable risk. I would
hate to see a real great small catering company get hurt because of not knowing
about this. Here is a sample of what I mean. I quote:

True, it is not the accounting issues, it is the consistent hypocrisy.
I worked for a company that provided conference space, catering and
entertainment for a republican sponsored event several years ago. The total
bill was over $50,000. The republican party of Minnesota paid about $20,000,
then said the person who organized the event was not authorized to spend that
much so they were not going to pay the rest. Ron Eibensteiner wrote a personal
check for $9,000, and our company wrote the rest off. It was sickening a couple
weeks later when I saw Eibensteiner on Almanac talking about how the republican
party was the only party who could control spending, they couldn't even control
themselves.

Kelly,
You're not mixing these people up with the Clinton campaign are you? Hillary
has stiffed her fair share of small vendors, to the tune of more than $10
million so far.
This isn't just a Republican issue.

And it isn't new. All of us who have been involved in politics for a long
time know that political campaigns have to pay a huge connect charge for
telephone service because the 1968 Humphrey campaign stuck AT&T for a
multi-million phone bill back then paying one cent per thousand dollars owed at
the
settlement.

Thanks to Chuck and others for pointing out that this isn't new, and to add,
it's a problem for all elected offices and all parties. Others have
appropriately railed against the big campaigns that do have both the money
and systems in place to have no excuses. I will note, however, that
sometimes smaller local campaigns with all-volunteer operations simply lose
track of invoices that may be sent to the candidate, treasurer, campaign
manager, or who knows who else. It can be particularly challenging to get
everything sorted out after the election is over and especially if the
candidate loses. Just a few weeks ago, for example, I helped a vendor track
down a former candidate -- who had no idea there was an outstanding invoice,
was mortified to find out it hadn't been paid, and of course paid it
immediately.
I'm most grateful that the vast majority of local St. Paul candidates over
the years have been honest and responsible people running relatively
organized campaigns and paying vendors on time -- I've certainly been lucky
to have both volunteers and vendors who did great work and kept everything
working smoothly and on time. I'm also glad the vendors that so many of us
local candidates use do such high quality work, are flexible and patient
with candidates' sometimes crazy requests (speaking just for myself, of
course ;-), and are creative and persistent in finding and working with
people when something gets out of whack.
We CAN make this work so much easier because we ARE local, this IS a
community, and we DO talk with each other. But all local vendors of course
need to watch out for individuals and organizations of any kind that pop in
for short and high-profile events and obviously have no investment in or
relationship with either the community or the vendor. And given the trusting
nature of local businesses and the madness that surrounds any convention,
it's just good business sense to plan ahead and be much more conservative
about forms and timing of payments for any goods or services.

pays bills on time thanks to super organized volunteers)
