I was surprised to see no posts this weekend about this incredible festival
at McMurray Fields by Como Park this weekend. It draws 40,000+ people from
all over the US (+ Canada, Laos, and Thailand) each year and boasts an
amazing combination of great sports events (soccer, volleyball, cato,
football, top spinning), performances, vendors of CDs/medicinal
herbs/clothing/insurance/politics/etc., local and state electeds
hosting/welcoming, and incredible food. The weather was gorgeous though
extraordinarily hot by Sunday afternoon!
My daughter was privileged to be invited to join one of the excellent local
Hmong women's soccer teams, Cocoon, that played one game Saturday and three
on Sunday -- and, incredibly, won the grand championship! The full roster of
Hmong players on that team included many St. Paul high school students as
well as some in college. They have been working extremely hard for weeks and
weeks with Coach Vang to get in shape and strategic enough to compete at
this level, and came through in high spirits and with a great attitude to
win all the way; this team also benefited tremendously from the sponsorship
of a local Hmong chiropractor who used to coach the team and has since
sponsored their participation in the tournament, their uniforms, and so on.
It's that kind of authentic support for young women like this that gives me
great hope for St. Paul's future.
I have attended this grand festival for a number of years because it's just
great fun -- how about the rest of you? I have in the past parked at the
Fairgrounds and taken the convenient shuttle bus, but because we went so
early each day this year we just parked close by. Someone told me they had
way too few buses this year and horribly long lines -- does anyone know if
that was just a point-in-time problem or was the arrangement different this
year? I also saw more trash than I would have liked in the neighborhoods,
but I did not see any bad behavior or altercations this year. Who else went?
Neighbors, what was your experience this year?

We went last last year and had a lot of fun (although it was a little
warm for us). We would have went yesterday, but the weather was a
little more tropical than we are comfortable with.

40,000 people??
Holy bouncing kato ball! I have to confess I didn't watch the news at all this
weekend, but I grabbed a paper here and there. Not a lot of heads up, but then
I might have missed it. My only notice of the event was my new roommate (she's
from Portland, OR) saying that she was excited to go. She's working with a lot
of Hmong kids this summer as an intern. I was a bit cautionary, and maybe
unnecessarily so, about the incidence of gang stuff in the past at this event.
I'm glad this year's was smooth, and with 40,000 people, that says an awful lot
about how very smooth it was!!
The trash is a bummer, but littering in general has become more of an issue the
last few years all over town. I know we don't have the money to provide more
receptacles and pick-up, but I wish our collective awareness could pick up, at
least. I feel for the residents around the State Fair every year. Y'know,
increasing awareness and re-instilling a pride of place would do the trick.
Like at the dog park--- leave no trace, and feel better about being there.

The festival takes place just three blocks from our house. I love watching the
streams of people pass by with their big umbrellas and their little kids. Ten
years ago, the women wore traditional dress, but now everyone dresses like
Americans.
I do not like the traffic--it is extremely hard to get in and out of our
neighborhood for those two days--but I figure we owe the Hmong two days of
inconvenience for all the work they did for us in Laos during the Viet Nam war.
The litter this year does not seem any worse than in years past.
And as far as the gang violence goes, I think that was a many years ago. The
festival has been safe and calm for quite some time.

I also live pretty close to the action, about 6 blocks. The traffic and
parking around the neighborhood are pretty thick for a couple of days -- I
believe the bit about the bus issues and such because it seemed the parking in
the neighborhood was reaching farther this year than last, although this may be
a result of the event growing in attendance too. A logistical inconvenience,
but it is quite an event and it's only for a couple of days so it hasn't really
bothered us.
You do get litter tossed around the neighborhood but this is par for the course
whenever you've got tens of thousands of people converging in one spot to watch
sports and consume foodstuffs. I walk around our neighborhood with my dog and
my litter-grabber stick afterward, and by varying the route within a few days
most of the boulevards around my neighborhood are pretty clean again.
