of George Floyd while in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department I
suggested to Mayor Carter that it might be appropriate to conduct an
assessment as to how well the city response was to the unprecedented event.
The Mayor did not share my view on that and actually thought it would be a bad
idea.
At that point I was motivated to file the following Data Practices Act Request
with the City clerk's Office on July 17, 2020.
"Record Requested: I would like to review all correspondence, email records or
phone records received or sent by Mayor Melvin Carter from May 27 thru May 30,
2020 related to demonstrations, civil disturbances, or public safety issues
concerning St. Paul."
Recently on March 5th, 2021 I received files related my request. I received a
PDF file of 165 pages. Some of the information speaks directly to how well
prepared the St. Paul Police Department was prepared to respond to the numerous
calls for assistance during the May 27-May 30th time period.
