On Monday, my Scout Troop dropped advertising door hangers for Saturday's
Scouting for Food program. I didn't pay much attention when a couple of the
drivers indicated they didn't hang fliers on vacant homes.
However, due to a lack of resources on Monday, I needed to finish dropping off
these advertisements. On three our of four two block stretches I found at least
a dozen known vacant homes. Based on telephone books and weekly newspapers at
some houses, there may be more.
These are the homes my grade school friends grew up in. In at least two cases
the huse has bee vacant for a while since there was a notice on the door
indicating the building was secure for winter weather.
Its truly tragic that neighbors who keep their property up have as many as
three or four vacant homes on their block.
