• Recent controversies within the St. Paul American Indian community over
programs associated with St. Paul Public Schools (SPPS) have led to the
director of the SPPS American Indian Education program requesting a
reassignment within the district. Questions about the future of the program
continue. Among the controversies: adoption of former director Rosemary
White Shield’s proposed New Day model, staff restructuring, and criticism
of how elections of the two Indian Education Parent Committees were
conducted. The recent controversies add to ongoing criticism that Indian Ed
fails to serve all Native students adequately and that Native students
continue to be affected by the achievement gap.

THEATER REVIEW | Skylark Opera’s "Candide" at the E. M. Pearson Theatre: A
loss for words
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/97358
by Basil Considine, TC Daily Planet • The E. M. Pearson Theatre at
Concordia University is a fine space for many things. Within its walls, a
modest pit orchestra sounds much larger than its actual size, musical airs
have space to resonate in without becoming muddied or lost, and actors can
use its size to play and emote both large and small. The theater does,
however, make special demands in the area of vocal diction–and its curtains
unforgivingly swallow ending consonants when appropriate efforts have not
been made. This acoustical property was unfortunately audible on Saturday,
June 14 when Skylark Opera opened its new production of “Candide.” There
was so much great music being sung well that it would have been lovely to
understand more of the words.
COMMUNITY VOICES | Frogtown Fresh is in the air
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/97460
by Sheronda Orridge, Community Voices • Art + Community = Frogtown Fresh is
a collaboration with the Frogtown Neighborhood Association and the Creative
Thinkers Group. The Creative Thinkers Group was started by Vong Lee, who
was hired by Springboard for The Arts as an Artist Organizer for the
Frogtown Neighborhood Association (FNA). Lee met with FNA and asked them
the issues they wanted to address in the Frogtown Community. Caty Royce
(Executive Director) and Sam Buffington (Organizing Director) wanted to
address the vacant lots, foreclosure and vacant homes in Frogtown.
