When you're responding to a post, take a few seconds and snip out
those sections of the post to which you're responding that are not
relevant to your response. For example, every post on the forum has a
"footer" of 18-20 lines that the software automatically appends. (The
footer provides a link to the web site for the thread, another link to
the author's profile, another link to contact the trusty ol'
Moderator, yet another link/directions on how to unsubscribe, etc.)
You really don't need/want to quote that footer ... as the software
will add it to your reply.
And there are times that you really don't need to quote the entirety
of the previous post ... especially when it's a long post and you're
just replying to one or two of the many points made.
Why do I ask this?
Because, dear and gentle reader, some of these posts get so
gosh-darned long that readability goes out the window. Especially
those posts that respond to posts that responded to a previous post
... by the time all the "nesting" of posts (and each of their footers)
occurs, we're getting into multi-page e-mails.
It's not a rule. It's not going to mean the end of the world if you
don't do it. But it sure will make it easier for folks to read what's
being written.
thanks!
