the rental criteria landlords should use."
My response:
I would also like to see the rental criteria landlords should use. From my
time in St. Paul, I remember this being a hot issue. I remember St. Paul
city officials commonly saying things like: "landlords get what they
deserve because they don't screen enough." This was most commonly said by
Lantry, Bostrum and Mayor Coleman. I would like one of these city officials
(or an authorized spokesperson) to post something official here. Please
tell us landlords what rental criteria we should use. I think the criteria
should meet these two specifics:
1) It should be the minimum criteria you believe will keep problem
tenants out.
2) You should also no longer hold landlords accountable for tenant
behavior if the landlord uses AT LEAST the criteria you specify.
If one of the elected officials I mentioned above is willing to put their
commonly issued directives in writing, I will pay them $500.00 (1). My
offer is serious. For years I have been told that screening is the solution
to our industry problems, yet I have never seen anything concrete proposed.
I am now offering $500 to the first elected city official that puts in
writing what they have advocated for years.
Regards, Bill Cullen.

(1) If it is considered illegal or unethical for me to pay a sitting
official, I will contribute the money to a charity or political organization
of their choice.
