Republican Convention: Who is paying the bills? From: Dave Thune Date: 2007 Jun 09 16:50 UTC Short link
I'm not sure who you asked Mitch, but I know of no one who condones or is
secretly supporting any actions which would stifle anyone's free speech -
even that of the delegates and elected officials of the republic party
If you are creating a list, count me as one who would urge that no one come
to town for the RNC seeking to do violence or "shut down" the convention.
Locally, there are ever so many who disagree strongly with the actions of
pres bush and his party. As a democrat I urge them to make use of all legal
means to get their message out. I am sure they will and the city of st. paul
will see that their message is within sight and sound of convention-goers.
At the same time I know there are others who disagree. They too will be
encouraged to make their feelings and voices heard. Free speech is a
two-way street. If it is shut down by either side, then the terrorists will
have won.

Dunno, David. The *real* fascists are coming from the
other side.
Note that I didn't say "your" side, because I just
KNOW that nobody on this list would EVER countenance
violence and repression against Republicans who are in
town to exercise their rights to participate in the
democratic process, nosireebob.
But I and my fellow conservative bloggers have been
documenting instances of people who plan on being
involved in the "protests" who plan on committing
mayhem.
In April, I appeared on MPR's "In The Loop"; my
co-panelist, a shrill little cookie from some anti-war
group (there are so many, and their names are so
similar it reminds me of the "People's Front of Judea"
scene from "Life of Brian") declared that their goal
is to "shut down Saint Paul so that people get an idea
of what life is like in Iraq", and to "shut down the
convention".
Idle big talk by arrested adolescents? She sure
didn't think so.
And of course, the bulletin boards, mailing lists and
blogs of people associated with the "Black Bloc" of
professional "protesters" ("rioters" is a better term)
and other such groups are abuzz with talk with the
mayhem they want to commit. Yeah, we've got our eye
on 'em.
So I went looking for signs of DFLers and left-leaning
"protesters" who not only condemn this sort of fascist
thuggery, but are taking active measures to make sure
the thugs know the local, responsible,
peacefully-dissenting left doesn't welcome them
(because talk is indeed cheap).
Here are my results:
{{{crickets}}}
Is it because of:
* "Major Renault Syndrome?" - "I'm shocked, Shocked
to see that there are people on my side of the
issue who really only want to throw bricks!"
* "Ostrich Syndrome" - y'all don't WANT to know, and
figure that if you can plausibly deny knowledge
you'll be absolved of complicity,
* "Ben and Jerry Syndrome" - you secretly pine for
the days of your youth (or your parents' youth)
(or grandparents' youth), carping endlessly about
the good ol' days and hoping for another
Chicago?
Whatever.
Just know this, whatever syndrome you suffer from:
while the mainstream media ALWAYS cuts you people
(both the mainstream left and the thugs who ride along
on your extreme fringe) a break, since they're
fundamentally sympathetic with your goals, there will
be an alternative center-right media presence in this
town that will be primed, ready and friggin' EAGER to
show the world, in video, audio, photo and print, who
the REAL fascists are.
Tossing a brick? Smile for the camera, Muffy. Before
your daddy can put your bail on his Amex card, your
face is going to be famous worldwide. And when you
get OR'ed because the Saint Paul establishment gets
queasy about holding spoiled little leftists in jail,
we'll be documenting that, too.
Of course, the whole problem could be avoided if the
Twin Cities' left were to rise as one and say with one
big unified voice "hey, morons - quit talking
violence, quit planning violence, quit prancing about
and giggling about all the havoc you want to strew; we
don't want you, your type, or your practices messing
up OUR good name". If the local left ACTIVELY made
the fascist thugs that travel from demonstration to
demonstration unwelcome - PROACTIVELY went out and
said "keep your crap out in San Francisco and New York
where it belongs" - then maybe it wouldn't happen.
But there's no such uprising, and I sincerely doubt
there ever will be.
The only real question is "why".
