Hello Greater Frogtown Neighbors Forum members, I want to thank you for being among the first to join this forum and invite you to "break the ice" online and introduce yourself. To say hello to everyone, simply press "reply-to-all" via e-mail or "add" via the web. Be sure you see <email obscured> in the to: or cc: field if posting via e-mail. Share a bit about yourself and family, how long you've lived in the area (or work/play/care about), and your favorite thing about the greater Frogtown neighborhood. Mention a local issue you'd like us to discuss in the future if you like. This is an open community "Issues Forum" that includes a mix of public issues and community life. Think of us sitting around a table having a friendly face to face to discussion. The fact that we've all agreed to use real names helps keep things civil and meaningful. Since this is "the Internet," if your telephone number is unlisted (or listed for that matter) you might want to describe where you live by the nearest intersection or landmark and not post the names of your children. With over 270 of us here, we will be temporarily moderating all posts for the next two weeks. Once at least 30 of us say hello we will be ready to open for general posting. Your Neighbor, Atom Robinson, Volunteer Forum Manager, Greater Frogtown Neighbors Forum P.S. If you have any trouble posting, please e-mail - <email obscured> - or visit http://e-democracy.org/contact

Hello Everyone, Since I asked everyone to introduce themselves, I guess I should, too! I'm Atom Robinson, and I live near Charles and Chatsworth. My friends call me "Atom," and some folks know me as "Adam," and I'm fine with either. My "day job" is as the community organizer for the Office for Social Justice- the advocacy division of Catholic Charities. I help people bring their economic, social, and racial justice values to their elected leaders. I'm also a member of the District 7 planning council, and I love doing "community stuff" around the neighborhood and in my adopted hometown. I'm especially happy to serve as the moderator of the Greater Frogtown NeighborsForum, and am looking forward to hearing your thoughts and maybe getting to meet some of you! My wife, Annie, and I have lived in Frogtown for about six years now. We rented for a few years, then bought our house, and love it. We welcomed our first child in August, and are getting used to being parents. I'm interested in reading your thoughts and insights about our neighborhood, and hearing about the hidden gems of our shared community. From time to time I'll pop in and write about upcoming civic engagement opportunities- elections, community forums, and other chances for you to meet and talk with the people who represent you! Thanks for agreeing to participate in the Greater Frogtown Neighbors Forum, and I look forward to reading your responses! Best, Atom Robinson Volunteer Forum Manager, Greater Frogtown Neighbors Forum

Hello! I'm Kristen Kidder and I live at Charles & Mackubin. My husband Jeff and I moved to Frogtown 18 years ago and have seen, and participated in, lots of community activism and changes in the neighborhood over the years. Our son, Jackson (16), is indigenous to the neighborhood! I've been involved in volunteer and/or staff capacities with several different community groups over the years. Currently I'm serving as the board chair at the Greater Frogtown CDC. Our boulevard trees have grown so much since we first moved in that our "full sun" garden spaces are now "mostly shady." We're considering some creative tree trimming for next year's gardening season... Frogtown is home for us.

Hello,
I'm Ann Jalonen, a relative newcomer to the Frogtown area, as I just moved here
(University and Park) in May. I've been in St. Paul since 2000, first on the
East Side, then on the river in Merriam Park. Needless to say, I'm a renter.
I work with low income families on public assistance, so many are also
residents here. My major concern is safe affordable housing, particularly as
that issue intersects with light rail. I do unpaid work with MICAH--the Metro
Interfaith Council on Affordable Housing. Right now we are focusing on
affordable housing in all its manifestations along the Central Corridor--both
preserving and expanding.
I look forward to finding out what people are thinking about.
Ann Jalonen
Don't worry about it.
Harold Gatensby

Hello Neighbors, My name is Patrick Bryan and though I live in south Minneapolis, I've been lucky to have worked in the Frogtown neighborhood for the last nine years as the principal of Jackson Magnet School at 437 Edmund. I've taught in St. Paul since 1987, at four different elementary schools. The neighbors and District Planning Council 7 members whom I've gotten to know and with whom I've worked over the years continue to reflect a strong community and I am glad to be a part of it and I look forward to the type of deepening connections that this forum can create. As an elementary school, the goal for Jackson is quite simple: it is to provide the best education for children and families and, to that end, no matter what language you speak, or what cultural community you come from, we deliver the best service and the best education for children and families, prekindergarten - 6th grade. We do not work alone: our community partnerships run deep. For example: Hmong American Partnership, Saint Paul Conservatory of Music, Project Spirit/ Freedom School, Minneapolis Children's Theater, YWCA/YMCA of Saint Paul, University of Minnesota 4H Extension Service & Department of Public Health, Project Voice Collaborative (City, County, Non-profit partners), Wilder Foundation, Saint Paul College of Visual Arts, (NdCAD) the Network for the Development of Children of African Descent,... I am including my email address and welcome your contact, questions, or wishes to volunteer or to partner in helping to support a healthy and growing community. Hi Frogtowners, We're Liz and Dave Colwell and we live on Charles across from Faith Lutheran Church's parking lot. We started renting our duplex in 1991 with our 2 and 4 year olds to see if we felt safe enough to raise them here. We've had lots of interesting experiences as the neighborhood has transitioned from lots of active drug and prostitution by our house to a neighborhood where we feel connected and safe...but miss some of our older neighbors who were anchors to us as we were settling in. We bought our duplex in 1994 and have always been able to rent it to people who have been good neighbors, thankfully! I worked for ten years at Frogtown Family Resource Center and have been so enriched by my experiences with staff and family there. Dave worked at Jackson School as a music teacher. But I'm teaching on the East side now and Dave is working with elderly gentlemen and looking for a library job, so our Frogtown focus is mostly shown in our gardening (see Frogtown Gardeners' website) and horseshoes and times with our neighbors enjoying food, fellowship and prayer for the neighborhood. It's great to hear about everyone who lives around us!

Hi Neighbors! My husband (Andy), stepson (Siris) and I have lived on the corner of Van Buren & Arundel for 4 years with a goofy dog (Mavis). Unlike Paul with the rampant cucumbers, we are unable to grow anything vine-like; even though we're getting quite the crop of beans, tomatoes and greens! I'm not sure if this is an issues forum question, but what the heck. Does anybody recommend a local dentist? I'd like to sink my teeth and invest my money in Frogtown. After many years of moving quite often, I feel settled here and am content to stay for the long term. I have found real joy in reading all these posts, and am looking forward to hearing from more people whether it be about issues or just who you are. -Sarah On Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 8:23 AM, LaShunda Simon

Hi all, My name is Molly and I live near Englewood and Grotto. My partner and I have lived in Frogtown for 10+ years now and we love it. One thing that motivates me in this neighborhood is trash - we live near Pierce Butler Route and about once a month I pick trash up in the green space. I like to feel good about my surroundings and I think clean and trash-free areas help people take pride in their neighborhood. I'm excited to meet more neighbors this way and look forward to learning more about everyone. Take care, Molly

Hi . . . I'm Marnita and I'm learning so much about Frogtown's civically participatory individuals and some of the issues that matter to you although I do not live here. I hope you will forgive my lack of introduction earlier, I didn't want to intrude. I live in the Kenwood neighborhood of Minneapolis and spend much of my time catalyzing relationships in the Twin Cities, Central Minnesota and beyond. We bring people together across race, class, culture or other means of self-identity in order to build common ground. We have been invited here by Steven--Hi Steven--& e-democracy because our two civic engagement models are very complementary and different, we are pondering ways that we may collaborate on some civic projects. I'm a total civic engagement junkie/policy wonk and am particularly passionate about improving reproductive health outcomes for young women, as well as building equity between communities and a shared vision for the future. The organization we founded marnitastable.org is strictly non-partisan and is a space for engaged in person peer-to-peer dialogue through our model of Intentional Social Interaction. I never cease to be amazed how when we focus on how much we have in common and what we want to accomplish how much can actually be done. I'm disheartened by the current tone of civic discourse and hope to enliven, bring value and insight to the dialogue at e-democracy. I look forward to getting to know you more and learning the ways in which we can support your community building. best, m! Morning. My name is Steven Pease. I have lived in Capitol Heights neighborhood for 2.5 years with my wife Andrea and terrier mutt Jameson. We love it here. I was a print journalist at various newspapers in Wisconsin and Minnesota for eight years, but more recently I've become a golf club salesman. Didn't see that one coming. :) I hope to continue to freelance locally, volunteer more in the future - particularly with the elderly - and make a positive difference in my neighborhood.

Hey, Frogtown: My name is Alaina Kozma. I've been a resident of Frogtown since 2002, when I moved to MInnesota from Madison, Wisconsin along with my two children. I live with my sons, ages 10 and 15, and my father, near the intersection of Lafond and Victoria. As a car-free household, we utilize public transportation, our bicycles, and our feet a great deal, as well as local businesses. I work at the Rondo branch of the Saint Paul Public Library (stop by and say Hi!) and will be graduating from Metropolitan State University in approximately one year. I mostly love living in Frogtown, but it isn't without its challenges. I care a lot about community organizing, public transportation, and civic engagement - I'm excited this forum has been created.

Hi all, Looks like I was trying to be one of the last to introduce myself. My name is Chris Zerendow and I live at 699 Thomas Ave with my wife Kathleen Glasgow (also on the list, I'll let her introduce herself) and our 16 month old son Nikolai (not quite reading yet), a collie named Conner, a silly kitty named Ms Poof Ball Cuddly Cat, Esq and quite a few goldfish in the backyard pond. I'm a visual artist (2d) and educator. I've recently taught at North Hennepin Community College (mostly on-line, hence my tardiness in this post), the University of Minnesota, the College of Visual Arts and St Catherine's. I like the working class nature of Frogtown, and I love our quirky house it often reminds me of where I grew up in Massachusetts. But, I'm also very discouraged by the copious amounts of trash, mangy cats, graffiti, drug use, noise and disrespect I encounter on our daily walks around the neighborhood. This of course is often balanced by the kids wanting to pet the dog, and the many wonder people we've met in the neighborhood. I'm interested in the growth of the community from gardening, bicycling, communication to other non-vehicular transportation. Glad to meet you all. Anyone know what Zone 5 means? cz >>> shoua khang <email obscured>> 10/6/2009 2:21 PM >>> Good Afternoon Frogtown! Hi Everyone, My name is Kou Xiong, I'm with the Hmong Archives. My partners that work with me are Marlin Heise and Steven Yang. We (meaning our org) moved to the Frogtown neighborhood about one and a half year ago to the location 298 1/2 University Avenue West. We are happy with our move because of the exposure to the community. We are an organization established to collect and preserve the Hmong heritage. Currently we have collected over 116,000 items of materials produced about or by Hmong. We are opened to the public, so feel free to stop by and visit us if you get a chance. We are open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10am - 6pm. In addition, if anyone have collected Hmong materials or produced something that is about the Hmong and are planning to throw it away, please consider us a place to donate your materials. Reading the different introductions has been quite a treat. I didn't realized how diverse the Frogtown neighborhood is, with people coming from all kinds of backgrounds. It's quite fun and interesting to read the different posts. I'm glad to meet all of you! =) Peace! Kou Xiong
Hi! I'm a resident of Saint Paul's East Side (Dayton's Bluff) and a community organizer with MICAH, the Metropolitan Interfaith Council on Affordable Housing. One of my assignments is the Ramsey chapter of the organization, which has been dealing with the Central Corridor Light Rail and it's impacts on the neighborhood. We've taken part in several community based events and committees and are talking to congregations along the Corridor about their concerns. I'm a big fan of using email to build communities and look forward to great conversations by, for, and about Frogtown.
Greetings, Frogtowners! I am Boa Lee -- a former Frogtown resident. We used to live on the 700 block of Minnehaha Avenue West and then the 600 block of Blair Avenue. Currently, I reside on St. Paul's East Side but find myself in Frogtown all of the time. My grandfather and several relatives still call Frogtown home. If my name sounds familiar to you, it is likely because I was a community organizer in the Frogtown neighborhood (2005 - 2007), so I've met some of you through that work. I look forward to meeting the rest of you as I do work in the community as one of E-Democracy's Outreach and Information Leader. Don't be surprised if you get a personal phone call or e-mail from me in the next few months. Marny Xiong and I will be working together this year to increase E-Democracy's reach in Frogtown. If you have ideas about how to make this forum more relevant to you and your neighbors, I encourage you to contact me, Atom, Steve or Marny. We are always interested in your feedback.
Thanks, Boa
Welcome new members ... we are now at 299 members.
During a technical upgrade we discovered that about dozen of you were
essentially half-signed up. After filling out a paper sign-up sheet at
a community event, library, etc. you were added to this group, but
likely not receiving the e-mail version of messages.
Welcome to the Greater Frogtown Neighbors forum!
