THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
BOOKS | Lois Lowry answers questions from St. Paul schoolchildren

by Lisa Steinmann, TC Daily Planet
When it comes to children's lit, the rock stars don't get much bigger than Lois
Lowry. The award-winning, millions-of-books-selling author is coming to the
Twin Cities at the end of March. She will make a stop at Wild Rumpus Book Store
in Minneapolis on Tuesday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. What makes this writer, now a
grandmother, so successful is that young readers really connect with her fun,
sometimes edgy and always thought-provoking work.
MUSIC | The Wailin' Jennys' "Bright Morning Stars" fairly glistens

A wonderful thing about acoustic icons the Wailin' Jennys: they're a trio of
amazing artists, each with fine solo releases, and the group hasn't been
plagued by public squabbling or other such nonsense as seems to often come with
the pressures of success. Their fans have to be among the happiest in music
that these gals stay intact, making gorgeous music together year after year.
ARTS ORBIT | Notes from the tipsy Twit-Pit: How Patton Oswalt earned me a
retweet from John Moe

by Courtney Algeo • Caveat: this two-part story involves me getting drunk in
both parts.
Charters and small schools win big, as education bill slashes Minneapolis, St.
Paul, students with disabilities, integration funding

Is it a bold, necessary reform or a dagger to the heart of urban public
schools? Either way you look at it, there's no doubt the Republican-sponsored
state K-12 funding bills headed for votes this week in the Minnesota
Legislature would toss out most of what public education leaders in Minneapolis
and St. Paul have been working toward for several years.
MUSIC | Hot Tuna's "Steady As She Goes": Yes, they do still make them like that

by Dwight Hobbes, TC Daily Planet
Hot Tuna fans might just have an accident on themselves. The band's released
its first electric studio album out in what in feels like forever (actually, 20
years). "Steady As She Goes" (Red House Records) is Hot Tuna's strongest since
70s classic "Burgers" (Grunt/RCA) featuring the tour-de-force stoner staple
"Sea Child," which seemed to be the radio every time you turned around.
THEATER | "Stomp": The title of the show pretty much says it all

20 years after its intial inception, "Stomp" is most definitely a feat
accompli. What began as a Fringe production in London is now a global brand
with multiple touring productions, movies, and appearances everywhere from Coke
commercials to the Oscars. The show works. The audience I saw it with on
Tuesday night seemed to love it. My attention, though, drifted—and by
"drifted," I mean "in my head, I wrote this entire review as well as two blog
entries on unrelated subjects."
