I haven’t seen any publicity given to the fact that the planning application
for the Slade Barracks site was approved last week, so here is the brief
official description of what we are going to get:
“Demolition of all existing buildings and structures on site, and closure of
Mascall Avenue
(i) Erection of 353 student study rooms and ancillary facilities on 3 and 4
levels in linked blocks, with entrance from Horspath Driftway. Provision 180
cycle parking spaces plus 10 car parking spaces accessed via Blackstock Close.
(ii) Erection of 15x1 bed flats, 25x2 bed flats, 9x3 bed flats and 18x3 bed
houses and 5x4 bed houses on 3 levels. Provision of 109 car parking spaces,
128 cycle parking spaces, bin stores and landscaping, accessed from Blackstock
Close.”

Sadly the time has now passed for anything to be done about this. The
application has been kicking around for over a year and there was time to
object before it went before committee. We need to be looking at the
applications as they come in... not after they have been approved if we wish
play a part in the process.

P.S. Those of us who objected managed to get a significant increase in the
Section 106 terms (the community kick-back). Another reason there hasn't been
greater publicity before now.. they bought off the locals.

I objected to this development when it was first put to the local area
committee.
I believe it just squeezes too many 'homes' into the area and will put
real pressure on Horsepath Driftway and The Slade roads.
When the 353 students arrive many will, I believe, arrive by car driven
by parents with all their stuff for the coming semester loaded into the
car. But where will they park to unload? Only 10 parking spaces are
going to be provided for the 353 student study room blocks!
Yes, Oxford does need affordable homes but this application just smacks
of development greed without real thought for important green spaces for
families.

I agree it will be a nightmare on the first week of term. If more spaces
were provided would not that encourage more car use by students over the
whole year?
With opposition to more houses being let to students in Headington is
not purpose built housing better than the alternatives. I missed the
meeting and these points may have been raised an answered so I am sorry
if I am repeating what you have already heard.
On a side note: hello everyone glad I joined this forum!
