> Thames Valley Police helicopter lands in Headington's Bury Knowle Park
Why?
Incidentally, did anyone else notice a few weeks ago the police
helicopter hovering for half an evening over the Marston Road/
Headington Hill area?
I went out to have a look and it seemed that they were announcing
something over the helicopter's PA system. Worried that here was the
four minute warning we were all brought up to believe was inevitable
and imminent it was actually quite scary while you couldn't actually
hear what was being said - I didn't know whether to go outside and
listen or round up all my canned food and make myself a little
shelter under the stairs with my mattress and an upended table.
But it actually turned out that what they were announcing was that
they were looking for a missing elderly lady. I seem to remember the
name was Molly something. But I never saw anything in any local news
about it. So does anyone know whether the lady was found, safe and
well?
I found it quite an extraordinary way of dealing with a missing
person incident - yelling things from a helicopter!
We could see the helicopter from our house, and it was obviously circling the park. When I went up to the park to find out what was going on, the place was swarming with police. All that the policeman guarding the North Place entrance would tell me was that a woman had collapsed in the park and they could not find her. Do you think that this your missing old lady, Jock?: http://archive.oxfordmail.net/2008/6/23/250987.html Or did only Marston suffer from the helicopter search for that one?
Perhaps the Helicopter was doing an 'Alcohol Bust' on the homeless drunks that
have been pushed out of the city centre into our local parks !
I saw this new notice attached to the gate of Bury
Knowle.............'priceless'..........who comes up with these policies ?
If a Police Officer suspects you of drinking you may be required to....(in
'Red'):
STOP DRINKING, or......wait for it.......,
SURRENDER THE ALCOHOL !!!!!!
Faliure to do so may lead us to fine you £500 which you don't have and will
never pay!
You'd have to be drunk, high, or mad to find 'any' logic in
this.................I'm sure a panel of our finest councillors though it was a
ground breaking idea at the time though !!!!!!!!!

On the subject of amusing city council signs in Bury Knowle Park, I
like the one that has just been put up on the public conveniences
which reads:
"Due to industrial action, these facilities will be closed for the
period of 16th and 17th July 2008. We apologize for any
_inconvenience_ this may cause."
I'd like to think that was a pun, but it probably wasn't.
A complaint that these toilets are always locked up for the night at
the early hour of 5pm was made at the June area committee meeting.
The permanent sign fixed to these public inconveniences offering
people five alternative "overnight facilities" is also a joke, as they
are all in the centre of Oxford.
Perhaps that's why they're taking down those trees. Maybe they've been damaged
by people ******* behind them in desperation at the locked loos.
I'm happy to see the plodcopter chasing down dangerous crims, but it seems a
bit of an odd use to be heckling "little old ladies" or "finding collapsed
persons". Some regions (Liverpool springs to mind, but my memory may be
playing tricks) have a website so the locals can see what all the fuss was
about when they're woken up at 2AM with buzzing and searchlights.
Given that these things are stupendously expensive to run (on fuel alone
anywhere from 35 to 60-odd gallons of fuel per _hour_), it'd be nice to know
just how far to raise one's eyebrow at the relevant increases on the council
tax bill.

Apparently a mulnerable patient went missing from the JR, and the helicopter
was there as part of the effort to find her. Eventually the Police found her
and returned her safely to the JR Hospital.
I must thank again Franck C for the photos.
