Here are the draft strategies for reducing energy use and increasing energy
efficiency focused on waste management. Are these the best strategies to focus
on?
1. Decrease energy costs of waste by increasing recycling and remanufacture
programs including construction debris recycling, electronics recycling,
anti-freeze, latex paint, paper, asphalt and waste prevention programs.
2. Encourage composting and anaerobic digestion of organic material.
3. Encourage reuse and renovation of existing buildings rather than demolition
and replacement.
4. Work toward tax and regulatory policies that reflect the true cost of energy
production and manufacturing processes based on a life-cycle cradle to grave
analysis.
5. Conduct waste composition studies every two years to develop information
about which new portions of the waste stream to target for recycling or
reduction and to evaluate the success of the current program. Include all
sectors of the community across all seasons of the year.
