As you probably know, the county council is currently consulting on its plan to
improve Queen Street this summer.
You may think this belongs to the Central, South, and West neighbourhood forum,
but in fact it does affect Headington people, as it is proposed that the stops
for bus passengers returning to Headington on the 8/9 and 7C should be moved to
New Road (to the west of Bonn Square, near the Co-op Bank). (The dropping-off
bus-stops on the way in remain as before.)
Consultation ends on 23 March. Full details here:
www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/transformoxford
If you are interested in other buses, the detailed PDF showing all the proposed
bus starting and stopping points is here:
http://portal.oxfordshire.gov.uk/content/publicnet/council_services/roads_transport/major_projects/transform/Proposed-bus-stop-locations-feb2009.pdf
You need to look at the map at the end to understand the table: for instance
the stops listed against the 8/9 and 7C buses are given as D4 and D5 (New
Road) and K4 (Queen’s Lane).
I don't understand the bus stops for the Thornhill Park & Ride: I can't see how
the bus can pick up at both Nuffield College (D1) and Castle Street (M2) on
its way from the Railway Station (R7) to Queen's Lane (K3). What I do suspect,
however, is that the main disadvantage for us is that it will not be as easy to
vacillate between the Park & Ride and the other buses, as the stops will be too
far apart and the buses will move faster than they currently do in Queen
Street.

I think the 400 will go round by Speedwell Street (dropping off there but not
picking up). The proposed picking-up in Castle Street (M2) is very close to the
proposed 7C/8 picking-up in New Road (D5). This should be convenient enough.
Isn't it nice to be thinking about this rather than about shuttles!

PS But the UI will also be going round by Speedwell Street, picking up outside
Nuffield (D3) and at a new stop at the Turl (U1, no less). That will rule out
sprinting from D4/D5 for most of us ...

Dont forget the No.15 bus from Wood Farm. Its normal pickup point G5 at the top
of St Aldates is being removed. The replacement is E3 top of Castle street.
This is a change of route, it seems as if it will have to travel through Queen
Street to get back into the High!!!
Ian, shuttle buses are still mentioned in the docuemnt at
http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/wps/portal/publicsite/councilservices?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=http://apps.oxfordshire.gov.uk/wps/wcm/connect/Internet%2FCouncil+services%2FRoads+and+transport%2FMajor+projects%2FTransform+Oxford%2FRT+-+PP+-+5+Transform+buses
quote
Use “normal” size buses to serve the routes that feed into the High Street but
terminate those buses to the east of the High Street. There are two points
where routes converge – at The Plain and at London Place. There appears to be
scope at both locations to create an appropriately landscaped terminus. Travel
onwards into the city centre would then be by a very high capacity, high
frequency (leaving at least every five minutes) transfer bus (some vehicles are
available that take almost four full “normal” bus loads) or on foot or,
possibly, by a hired bike.

Yes, it is nice not to be talking about shuttles any more, but the Queen St
re-org is only the first part of Phase 1 of the Transform Oxford scheme. It
will still have buses using Queen St, albeit fewer of them and with no bus
stops on the street itself. Only those terminating from the East will use Queen
St as they need to loop somewhere. Hence the 15 goes into Queen St, while many
others come out.
It is still proposed long term however to close Queen St entirely. THis will
cause much greater upheaval, as the buses using it as part of a turning loop
will need to loop elsewhere.
THis will pose difficulties for users and operators as there are downsides
[alongside the upsides] to all the alternatives, of which some are:
Turn at the station [a lot of dead mileage and the requirement to fight across
private traffic]
Turn at Oxpens [the requirement to fight across private traffic]
Turn at Butterwyke PLace [ditto]
Turn at Worcester St [Nuffield College won't sell their car park as they want
to build on it, and the rest may become a canal basin]
Run along Thames St and back up New Rd [no separation from private traffic -
THames St is the queuing area for the Westgate]
You get the idea. All are symptomatic of viewing the bus as a problem not a
solution, and hoping alternatives can be made to work with minimal investment.

For Marston e-forum members, I've checked the 13 and X13 details and in
terms of High Street stops for in-bound buses and St Aldate stops for
out-bound stops, there's very little change - just shifted one stop along
the street.

Bus stops will be removed from Queen Street and routes changed on Sunday 19
July (with work on Queen Street starting on Monday 20 July).
As expected, the stops for the 7c and 8 & 9 Headington buses will now
respectively be E3 and E2 on Castle Street, just around the corner from the
eastern end of New Road by Bonn Square.

Now I have actually studied the bus map properly I realize the bus stops
replacing those in Queen Street on 19 July aren't quite as predicted.
To see exactly where to get your bus, go to
http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/transformoxford
and click on "Improvements to Queen Street - 2009"
and then on "changes to bus stop locations"
(the resulting dreadful URL can't be made tiny).
The Thornhill Park & Ride will pick up in St Aldate's in Oxford, and the other
Headington buses from Castle Street.
On the subject of buses, I imagine most people in Headington will have received
the new No.10 bus timetable through their door as we have, but in case you
haven't, you may need to know the changes that come into effect today
(Wednesday 1 July). From now on the BrookesBus service will be provided by the
Oxford Bus Company rather than Stagecoach, and a new evening and Sunday service
on route 10 replaces the current U10. That timetable is here:
http://www.stagecoachbus.com/timetables/10w290609.pdf
According to today's Oxford Mail at
http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/headlines/4466768.New_Brookesbus_operator_offers_free_wi_fi_Internet/
the U1 and U5 routes will be operated by 80-seat Scania buses with leather
upholstery, WiFi Internet connections, air conditioning, and real-time travel
information screens.

Hah - on the Brookes contract, we were speculating last night that if
the offices were too warm again today, we might all grab a laptop and
ride the bus all day from Harcourt to Wheatley and back and work on
the WiFi...:)

I see the no. 15 bus, serving Wood Farm, is also scheduled to go via Castle
Street instead of original route via St Aldates. This means extra buses through
Queen St..
Seems contradictory to the idea of reducing the number of buses through Queen
St..
Bus Stops E1 E2 & E3 have 16 bus routes between them, I can envisge traffic
jams in Castle St.
