The Oxford High Street Business Association has a suggestion that many of the
London and Airport buses, start from park-and-rides linking through to
Thornhill. Surely there must be another way to re-route the buses from the High
Street? I for one would not be happy being dropped at a park-and-ride either
very late at night or the early hours of the morning and having to make my way
to the centre.
This has already been discussed at length on the Headington forum. The
conclusion people there came to was that it would not reduce traffic on the
roads to the pick-up point, as passengers would need more vehicles to got to
and from Thornhill. The change would cause serious inconvenience to those with
heavy luggage.
If you see the main problem of the 'High Street' as too many buses. I suggest there are two alternative solutions available. 1. Start building a Light Rail/Tram system for Oxford. 2. Start construction on the Christchurch Meadow Scheme. If you see the main problem is too much street furniture in Oxford. I suggest we introduce a congestion charging scheme for the whole of Oxford. which is free for Oxford redidents only to enter the city. http://www.oxfordprospect.co.uk/oxfordnews.htm
A meadow road is unacceptable and trams too expensive.
The coaches could be cut back to St Clements, with a bus layover point
at the bottom of Morrell Ave. This would allow the coaches to supply the
East Oxford / Brookes / Headington market, and not run half-empty down
the High.
I'd envisage the coaches running as now to the Plain, then back up St
Clements, layover in Morrell Ave, then via Morrell Ave and Gipsy Lane.
