Minneapolis school superintendent Bernadeia Johnson tackles less-publicized
issues in first 2013 Soup with the Supe
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/70136
by Makula Dunbar, TC Daily Planet Whats an average day like in the shoes
of Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson? At the February 4 Soup with the Supe
event at the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, about 150 people
learned that Johnson juggles meetings and school visits day-to-day. They
also told the superintendent about their issues and experiences with
Minneapolis Public Schools over a light dinner of soup, sandwiches and
cookies. A handful of translators and a fluid passing of the mic to anyone
wanting to speak made for an inviting and successful conversation.
THEATER REVIEW | "The Book of Mormon" pokes fun but enlightens at the
Orpheum Theatre
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/70160
by Morgan Halaska, TC Daily Planet Getting a ticket to review The Book of
Mormon at the Orpheum Theatre on Wednesday, February 6 was like getting a
golden ticket to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. "We bought our tickets a
year ago," an acquaintance of my friend told us. People filled the halls
before the doors opened at 7 p.m., anxious to get to their seats. The half
hour before the show started, people had their phones out, taking pictures
of their tickets and selfies in front of the cloud backdrop (probably
sharing it on Facebook to make friends who couldn't get a ticket jealous).
There's a lot of hype surrounding the show by the creators of South Park,
and judging by the reception of the bathroom humor, Star Wars and Star
Trekreferences, irreverent religious commentary, the show didn't
disappoint
Wednesday night's crowd.

Brett Buckner wants to shake up Minneapolis' 5th Ward politics

News<http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/partners/insight-news> "Close to 40
percent of men 16 to 25 in north Minneapolis are
unemployed." That quote was the answer given by Brett Buckner, when asked
why there needed to be a shake-up in 5th ward politics. "How do we prepare
the young people to build a career right here in north Minneapolis? When
you have that many men not connected and not contributing, it affects
everyone," said Buckner, who is seeking to be the DFL candidate for 5th
ward councilman.
POKING AROUND | Minneapolis gets a failing grade in transparency
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/70162
by Mary Treacy <http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/profiles/mary-treacy> In
this age of DIY informed citizenship governing agencies at every level have
accelerated demand, and cost-effective tools, to assure that the proverbial
man or woman on the street can be an independent searcher of truth in
government. At the federal level, advocacy groups, e.g. the National
Security Archive, the Center for Effective Government, Open the Government,
the Sunlight Foundation, Public Integrity and a host of others have probed
the intricacies of the bureaucracies. Because practices of state
governments vary greatly, advocacy groups differ markedly by state, with
many states having more than one watchdog group keeping an eye on the laws,
regulations and their implementation.
