Just heard someone call it the "Lurt" (rimes with Burt). I like it. Better
than LRT.

Maybe we should call it the 'Boondoggle Line' since some many naysayer's
are still calling it that in spite of its overwhelming success.
What ceases to amaze me is all the people that complain about its costs
and ignore the costs of our roads.
Yes, the LRT cost a huge amount of money to build, but it started from
scratch.
Try building our roads from scratch sometime and then compare costs.

i still do not understand why the LRT is street level on Hiawatha as opposed to
underground or up as to not mess with car, foot and nbike traffic....but then
again i do not undertand lots of things like
why would thye build a baseball stadium without a retractable roof? i will
stop there. I think the line that exists should be called
MOADT - Mall of America to Downtown
or
MOAMPLS - MOA to DT Minneapolis
ok i just made these up

Reminds of the days when John Derus was the major voice in the state pushing
for LRT. The county board used to joke that when it finally got built, it
ought to be DART, for Derus Area Rapid Transit.

I really like SMART. Works great as an acronym. Shows those using it they're
making an intelligent choice.
But I wish there could be something more locally identifiable and fun.
For example, I'm thinking about Boston's story behind its "CharlieCard." The
CharlieCard is a contactless, stored value smart card used for electronic
ticketing as part of the Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system installed by
the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) at its stations and on
its vehicles. The CharlieCard is named after a fictional character in a folk
music song often called Charlie on the MTA, which concerns a man trapped
forever on the Boston subway because he can't pay the fare required to exit.
I know that's not the name of their system. But it's fun, especially when
the transit worker with the thick Boston accent asks you if you'd like to
buy a "Chaalecaad."

David Tilsen's SMART (Saint Paul Minneapolis Rapid Area Transit) idea is great.
It puts Saint Paul first which is a good thing for a city that I think of as
"poised on the edge of yesterday."?
A somewhat more playful name for the LRT?could be TC Rider.?We?could sing the
old CC Rider song with some local lyrics as we rock and roll down the line....

SMART makes great since for the line between the downtowns, but not the
system.
Hiawatha Line is my pick for the LRT line we now have since it follows
Hiawatha Ave along a good portion of its path.
MAMOA is odd, but could stand for Minneapolis, Airport, MOA; the major
points of connection.
Just an idea since that's the thread.

Wasn't "TCRT" the name of the public transportation system during the streetcar
era, before Mpls/SP switched to buses? Perhaps we would be returning full
circle by changing the name back, but we would at least be able to reclaim a
small piece of our forgotten history.

Tips on where to research this would be welcome. I'd be happy to do some of

I also like"SMART" as it points
out that one is smart to take the SMART.In Atlanta it's the MARTA, in San
Fransicso it's the BART - METRO in
DC. I like the idea of something catchey that everyone refers to for the
entire system.Annie YoungEast

Connie adds:
There's a recently-published book that contains pretty much
everything you ever wanted to know about the streetcars in our
town[s]: by John W. Diers and Aaron Isaacs. Twin Cities by Trolley:
The Streetcar Era in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Mpls: University of
Minnesota Press, 2007.
TCRT was indeed the Twin City Rapid Transit Co, a private concern
that mismanaged the presence of automobiles and buses in the 1940s.
The authors have a good story on the scandals associated with the
demise of the streetcars, and what happened to the various players in
those scandals.
The last route running was the Como-Harriet line, which died after a
last pass in June of 1954.
