And thus we vilify the GOP here, in this DFL bastion, for their stance on many
issues...and
our old Democratic-Farmer-Labor party is complicit in the same sorts of ethical
meandering that it accuses its opposition of doing...Anyone notice how RT,
since
taking up the mantle of being Obama's State Campaign Chair, has done some
things
he wouldn't have dreamed of doing some years back? RT, lest we forget, has more
than a little to do with influencing the Star Tribune's coverage of a wide
range of issues.
Pravda had more latitude in coverage than the Strib. Thus, we end up in these
1984-like
scenarios..."Oceania has always been our friend and is still our closest ally."
My
recent, fact-filled observations, directed to Congressman Ellison, members of
the
City Council and our Mayor, regarding just what credentials Hayden (fils)
allows him
to declare himself to be a "homeless" or "housing" advocate have gone
unanswered.
Thus, the DFL machine goes silent in the face of such charges, truth enters not
into
the equation...and we now have a scenario where "Jeff Hayden is a homeless
advocate and has always been a homeless advocate". It becomes heresy to
question Robert Lilligren, Lisa Goodman or the other Council Members on their
endorsement of this guy based on credentials not supported by fact. The
converse
is also maddening, "Guy Gambill is not a homeless advocate and has never been
a homeless advocate who merits the respect of Hayden...who, as all the core
DFL pols will assert...has always been a homeless advocate..just ask us, we'll
tell you. It is an odd thing to become an "unperson" in such things,
particularly
when, with a clear memory and supported by a pretty damning body of fact,
I will assert---still---that I and others I know have been about as in the mix
on
this stuff as one can get since 2000...but the fact that the likes of Goodman,
Lilligren
and others need merely aver that this or that candidate is a homeless advocate
is enough...have y'all completely lost your minds, Minneapolis? My 6 year old
nephew has as much right to the epithet as Hayden...used to be Daddy's
legacy did not guarantee you a spot at the trough...that is all changed now.
Folks wonder why we are in such a mess...it is precisely because of things
like this....look no further than "us'. We let this junk fly.
Other such reworkings of identity: Norm Coleman, amongst others.

I am sending out this press release -
As announced on the radio today, Bill McGaughey, an Independence Party
candidate, will be picketing the main office of the Star Tribune newspaper, 425
Portland Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, tomorrow, October 29, between 7 a.m.
and 9 a.m. He is one of three candidates on the ballot for Congress in
Minnesotas 5th district (Minneapolis and suburbs). His Republican opponent,
Barb Davis White, who supports the action, may also be present for part of the
time.
With an average daily circulation of 322,000 readers (521,000 on Sundays), the
Star Tribune is by far Minnesotas largest newspaper . It enjoys a near
monopoly in the 5th Congressional district. Yet, its editors and reporters have
imposed a near blackout of news on the 5th district Congressional race. Until
yesterday, McGaughey and Davis White were mentioned twice in Star Tribune news
reporting - brief statements that they were each running unopposed in their
partys primary - while DFL incumbent Keith Ellison, who voted for the bailout
legislation strongly supported by the Star Tribune, was quoted or mentioned in
its articles at least fifty times in the three-month period following the
filing
deadline in mid July.
Yesterday, Monday, October 27, the Star Tribune finally ran a story on the 5th
district Congressional race. It was titled Ellison has fewer foes and a far
easier path to victory. The bulk of the story concerned Keith Ellisons
campaigns, past and present. Bill McGaughey was mentioned in only two
sentences
(3% of the space). The concluding paragraph was focused entirely on Barb Davis
Whites hair.
Bill McGaughey is contending that without good press coverage, voters cannot
cast intelligent votes. The election process then becomes degraded. He is
contending that the Star Tribune newspaper has an agenda that has as much to do
with shaping the political news as with reporting it. He has invited the
reporter who wrote the article, Steve Brandt, to engage in a discussion with
him
on the sidewalk in front of the Star Tribune headquarters as to the merits of
the article. When newspapers show bias to this extent, they become part of the
political news and legitimate targets for protest demonstrations.
