Unless a miracle happens, there’s going to be a Pi-shaped hole in the
heart of Minneapolis. Pi Restaurant and Bar, the meeting place for
queer women, the GBLT community, and alternative people of all
stripes, is the latest casualty of the faltering economy and is set
to close its doors on November 15. Pi patrons have responded to the
news with an overwhelming campaign of generosity to Pi’s owner, Tara
Yule, but the situation is still grim.

When David Piehl arrived at home at about noon on September 19, he
checked the nearby Regan house to make sure it looked okay. He went
inside his own home, and when he came back out about 2:30 p.m., he
saw that the stained glass was gone from his neighbor's house.
Somali voter influence claims raise more questions than answers
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/15782
By Molly Priesmeyer, Minnesota Independent
Last night Omar Jamal, head of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center,
told KSTP news that as many as 500 people were either persuaded or
misled to vote for Al Franken at the Brian Coyle Center on Tuesday.
As the Minnesota Independent reported on Tuesday, witnesses at the
Brian Coyle Center told me and another reporter on site, Julia
Nekessa Opoti, who writes for the Twin Cities Daily Planet and
Mshale, a local African community newspaper, that voters were being
persuaded to vote for Norm Coleman. What’s more, a Coleman staffer
named Mahamoud Wardere was on hand throughout most of the day acting
as at one point a GOP challenger and at another a translator.

THEATER | A slick "Shadowlands" at the Guthrie
http://tcdailyplanet.net/node/15788
by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet • Artistic Director Joe Dowling’s
production of "Shadowlands" at the Guthrie Theater is a testament to
the power of film. Playwright William Nicholson originally wrote
"Shadowlands" as a TV movie for the BBC, and later adapted it for the
stage—then re-adapted it as the basis for a 1993 feature film
starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. Film, which can be a very
intimate medium, is well-suited to this delicate emotional material,
which would also work well in a cozy space like the Jungle Theater;
but on the Guthrie’s grand McGuire Proscenium Stage, the play’s
tender moments are diluted.
Scratch Games: Understanding graffiti

Power, self-expression and rebellion are the key words to
understanding any discussion about graffiti. Recent angst about a
growing problem in Minneapolis prompted the Uptown Association to
present a Graffiti Education Meeting at Bryant Square Park. Sergeant
Giovanni Veliz, a Minneapolis Police Department graffiti
investigator, gave an experienced report of graffiti in Uptown with
5th Precinct Crime Prevention Specialist Tom Thompson and Angela
Brenny of Minneapolis Solid Waste and Recycling (MSWR).

ENGAGE MINNESOTA | Barack Obama: Global phenomenon and international

By Lolla Mohammed Nur • It is 7 a.m. on November 5th, and I am in my
living room in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with the TV on. CNN has just
announced that Barack Obama has won the electoral vote and is
therefore the new president-elect of the United States. An endless
flow of tears start streaming down my face. My tears are those of joy
and victory, not of sadness.
