My point very specifically is that as a neighborhood activist, as
someone that believes deeply in community, and someone that believes
that elected office is earned and not bestowed, that I find it
interesting that Jeff is being positioned as the down home
neighborhood candidate, when, I have never heard of him before, and,
I consider myself to be a plugged in chap. I find it interesting also
that I have gotten two emails now from folks that work in housing and
in the homeless community that have indicated that they have never
heard of the guy either, at least in the context of that particular
work. I believe that elected officials whether for the school board
or the U.S. Senate should have a history of community work that
preceeds them.
I am in no way saying that Jeff does not have that history. I am
saying that I have not heard of him or his work in the past. And, for
someone that has grown up and worked deeply and continues to work
deeply in one of the communities he seeks to represent in the State
House, that is interesting to me. Also, I do not care that Keith
Ellison and a slew of DFL lawmakers and elected officials have
endorsed him. Of course they have. He is the DFL endorsed candidate.
Those endorsements qualify him to be a party officer not a public
officer. I want to know about his work. I want to know how he has
worked to change the lives of folks in my neighborhood. I want to
know how he has reached out to communities to which he doesn't belong
to support their work. Let me be specific. I first heard of Farheen
because of her work as a straight Muslim woman openly working for and
supporting the liberation of queer Muslims. What work has Jeff Hayden
done to support women, queer folks, people with disabilities? What
work has he done to support, preserve, and expand the artist
community in Powderhorn and surrounding areas? And P.S. I want to
hear from the people whose lives he has impacted. I can read a
resume. That means little. I want to hear from folks that he has
supported, gone to the matt for and with, and hear the tangible
results that have created positive change in people's lives in our
hood.
Being endorsed by a party has nothing to do with being the best
person for a particular job. The Green Party endorsed Ralph Nader in
the past. I've long thought he should stick to consumer protection
and leave national politics to others that have a better gift for
bringing people together. I did not vote for him regardless of his
endorsement. Unfortunately, there is mentality in the city that DFL
endorsed=Best Choice and Annointed. I thoroughly disagree.
That, Leigh, is my point.

Brandon
thanks for the reply -
as i said when i replied to you i honestly did not understand what you were
trying to say in your original post on this thread - your explanation was
helpful.
i cannot figure out how to email off list and for some reason i get your posts
individually - i also can't figure out why when some people post it starts a
new thread instead of just having one thread...?

The idea that Brandon could be involved as a "community activist" in Powderhorn
for very long or friends with Gary Schiff for very long and not know who Hayden
is is simply amazing to me. Gary started with Hayden's support and Jeff Hayden
was his assistant for years.
But then I remember that I had never heard one thing about Farheen, and still
have not other than from attempts at being elected. I am not sure anyone would
have except for her running for office. So it is possible I guess for someone
to be an "activist" and most people having no idea about who they are.
Of course I have not beena part ofthe Powderhorn Neighborhood for twenty years
norGary Schiff's Ward, and never a part of his legislative district, and yet I
most certainly know who Jeff Hayden is. And not because I am aDemocrat. Of
course because I am a Democrat I have repeatedly run into Jeff through
political activities.
As for the terms "Neighborhood Activist" and "Affordable Housing Advocate"
these are almost meaningless. I know Jeff has been very "active" in his
community. I know he has "advocated" for affordable housing. I know no such
thing about Farheen. But so what? Almost ANYONE running for office with any
hope of winning is a "Neighborhood Activist" and an "Affordable Housing
Activist". The question is, "How active were they?"
There are thousands of activist and "Advocates" in Minneapolis and the Twin
Cities and most do not know each other, or if they do they simply know they are
associated with some organization. Unless you are a "Nut" like I am about
neighborhood empowerment and sustainable affordable housing, or like my friend
Guy is about homelessnes and veteran's rights then most people involved in the
same area do not really know who you are.
BTW, "Nut" is used here as a compliment for those willing to lay something of
their life on the line. Just working at a middle class job for money and
putting in your "40" just does not qualify someone to be a true advocate and
activist, or "Nut", in my mind. But there are a few who do and they deserve the
compliment. Of course I do NOT know ANY politicians now holding public office
or running for office who actually care about people that much!
The real question is, "Given the political reality at the Legislature, who can
be elected to go there and get the most for the Legislative District and for
the City of Minneapolis?" I have no dog in the fight, nor horse in the race,
but I do know that Jeff Hayden will have much more support to accomplish those
things than will Farheen. Anyone who thinks different has spent little time
there there at the Legislature lobbying for some issue and simply does not
comprehend the realities of the situation.
We need as much coordinated support as possible if we are to get a return to a
reasonable "Minnesota Care", affordable housing, and other issues that deeply
affect our City and its residents. The DFL needs as many votes possible and as
many legislators as possible if those things are to happen. While I think we
need a reasonable alternative to the Republicans and the DFL to vote for, I
also think that right now we need to consolidate enough votes in the
legislature to be effective. Replacing Neva with Farheen simply takes a vote
away from that effort.
