Hopefully, I don't need to explicitly explain why I see this as a locally relevant post... This is a great talk regarding how some European cities shifted to more bicycle/pedestrian friendly environments. It was presented in Vancouver BC recently as a part of their effort to increase their bike share. It runs about 80 minutes and the speaker is definitely a pretty strong advocate of cycling, but in a fun way rather than a preachy way. http://www.sfu.ca/city/city_pgm_video020.htm One of the (many) interesting things he brought up is that when they made several areas "car free zones", the businesses in the areas were hugely against it. However, once it was done, their businesses flourished and the businesses outside the areas wanted to be included in the area as well. Anyway, if you want to see a common vision shared by many bike evangelists, pop this up in a corner of your computer and let it run. - phaedrus
Thank you phaedrus. This is very good information for everyone, and I will take
this to Saint Paul where bicycle mobility is less understood, particularly from
an economic and business perspective.

I'd like to echo Paul Nelson's "thank you" for posting this video lecture:
it's long (79 minutes without Q & A), but I consider it a "must see" for
local policy makers.
I loved the fact that several European cities give real priority to
bicyclists over cars at traffic lights and intersections (this video
offers lots of great ideas for implementation). I also appreciate the
fact that Pucher ends with an incentive for all of us to reduce our car
trips (he reminds us that for every hour we spend cycling, we increase our
healthy life--our time spent being mobile and disease-free--by more than
one hour).
It's an excellent video: Pucher is enthusiastic and offers lots of great
examples and ideas.
