Convention Media Event. Adult beverages will be available under the

Free parking on Nicollet Island
One of the best kept secrets in the park system is the existence of
140-150 free parking spaces on Nicollet Island downriver from the
Hennepin Avenue bridge. These regional park parking lots are available
to regional park visitors. This would include journalists attending the
RNC media event.
The two lots are along Power Street from Merriam down to the riverfront
(behind the Nicollet Island Pavilion) and on the block between Merriam,
Hennepin, Wilder and West Island (so across from the Nicollet Island Inn
towards downtown). Additionally, the Park Board owns a gravel lot on
East Island Avenue that provides parking for special events - but how
this is available is sort of a mystery process. There is also a 4 hour
10 car regional park parking lot, free, just upriver from the railroad
tracks on West Island Avenue.
The lots are not available for non-regional park purposes - so downtown
workers, local high school students, and customers of Main Street and
Old St. Anthony businesses are out of luck. On the honor system.
If you encounter valet parking at these lots, DON'T pay. As of today,
the Park Board is not showing a valet parking permit anywhere on
Nicollet Island. The City business database is not showing permits for
these addresses. Don't turn your car over to an unlicensed operator.
(There are reports of an unlicensed operator using these lots in the
past - allegedly for charity in some cases.)

I need to edit my own Public Service announcement. Though the permit
closes the Stone Arch Bridge from 6:30-8:30 pm this evening, signs at
the event location state...
4pm to 10 pm.
No techie, but I will try to get the photo onto the files section of
the forum.

This is offensive.
You mean there's nowhere else in Minneapolis that the park board could
offer rather than let the Repbulicans close a major bike/pedestrian artery
into downtown?
Sorry if this has been discussed before and I wasn't paying attention, but
I had to comment. This really disgusts me.
People who only talked about blocking roads in St. Paul got their houses
raided. Politicians who want to block a road get the keys to the city.
Disgusting.

In addition, there is a Gophers football game tonight, and a lot of
fans use the bridge to get to the game from off campus housing in the
Marcy-Homes neighborhood.

All,
This is funny.
Earlier this year I posted on this list regarding a bike race/rally that
was closing the Parkway that went under 35W. At that time there were
only two ways to get from the east side of 35W to the west side.
I believe that the responses I got from people on this list were to the
effect: Live with it!
I suggest that we show good hospitality and some sense of fairness and
do the same here.

This has been specifically discussed on the list before - in 2005. At
that time, Comm. Erwin wrote:
Bottom line is that the Stone Arch Bridge will not be leased for any private
activity and Comm. Young, Dziedzic, Berry-Graves and myself, among others,
voiced concern about a lack of neighbor notification and public hearing
related to the Plank Rd. As a result, the plank rd proposal was tabled for
now as well.

Liz W may correct me but I don't recall the Park Board Commissioners
reconsidering this policy since it was dismissed in 2005.
