I was pleasantly surprised when I read “The 3rd Precinct” by Kay Schroven, in
the May South Side Pride (SSP). It starts out talking abut the new Inspector of
the Third Police Precinct in Minneapolis, Inspector Jose Gome. It then
continues with other relevant and important information about the Third
Precinct. Unlike many of he other articles about the MPD, in SSP, especially
those written by the Editor/Publisher, Ed Felien, this article came across as
not only informative but also quite objective. It lacked much of the vitriol
and hyperbole, which I regard as hate speech, directed toward the police. I
hope we can see more of this kind of reporting from the SSP in the future.

The time a broken clock shows is irrelevant for any practical purpose because
it is not reliable, except that, with two daily exceptions, it is always wrong.
Not very helpful.

I think it is better to use the phrase, "even a stopped clock", rather than
"even a broken clock is right twice a day.” Before digital clocks were invented
that would usually be true. Digital clocks, whether stopped or broken, can just
go blank, displaying no time, or anything else either.

A broken clock may display perfect time all day, depending on what is broken.
If the case or even the glass front is broken it is unlikely to affect the time
displayed. If the hands are broken or removed from an analog cock it will also
display no time at all.

BTW, the displayed time on this website is always off by about 5 or so hours,
as it is displayed on my devices. As far as I can tell it is never right.. I
mean correct. Can someone please fix that?

specific. Broken and stopped clocks are known to exist all around the globe,
and in outer space as well. I am assuming that the International Space Station
has some clocks as does the Tesla car that was shot into space. Some of these
clocks will eventually stop. Those clocks could be working fine but, because
they are in orbit, unless they are modified, they would still only show the
correct time when they are in the correct time zone. Maybe they are all set to
Huston or Moscow time, just in case... "We have a problem Huston (or Moscow)."

Correction:
Upon re-reading Tim Bonham's post, he compares Ed's newspaper, the South Side
Pride to a broken clock. Southside Pride is a Minneapolis newspaper, so in that
way, Tim Bonham's post, unlike the rest of the "clock" posts, is
Minneapolis-specific. So, just based on that post, I should not include him in
the list of people who have posted on non-Minneapolis-specific issues.

My response to Tim Bonham: A stopped clock is never correct. If a clock is
stopped at 2 then the clock is assumed to be correct at both 2 am and 2 pm. But
the exact time, for any imagined moment does not, and can not exist. The reason
is that there is no “now,” only the past, which is now gone, except as a
memory, and what will be the future, but is not yet here.

That is why the South Side Pride articles are more accurate than a stopped
clock, or any clock for that matter. Every article in South Side Pride has at
least some accurate information, even if, as is sometimes the case with
articles Ed writes himself, only the name of the writer, and the date it was
published are accurate. On the other hand, the stopped clock at least comes
close to showing the correct time twice a day.
