police officers, the stories of many of them are available at the website

Go to the Stolen Lives section and click on the Stolen Lives under the
picture. There you will find the names of people killed by police actions
and how they died. Surprisingly, a large number of these deaths do not
involve firearms.
One of the main causes of death involving police is high speed car chases.
A number of the victims on their way somewhere have become collateral
damage. Over the past year there has been a substantial increase in
car-jackings, joy rides by youths, and road rage incidents possibly
stemming from the frustrations of COVID-19 and exacerbated by the murder of
George Floyd. In spite of changes to the rules of pursuit by officers, the
death toll from peripheral victims is continuing to rise.
Another cause of death from encounters with police is the Taser, once
touted as an alternative to using a gun. Improper and/or injudicious use
of the Taser or the use of multiple Tasers by police has resulted in
premature deaths. The frequency of deaths coinciding with being tased has
led to studies by the local medical community. Closer scrutiny of these
studies have revealed disturbing news about the lack of ethics regarding
informed consent.
Deaths of people in custody are among the causes of death attributed to law
officers working in jails and prisons. Over the years, a number of
incarcerated people in need of medical help did not receive that help and
and died while in custody. This negligence occurred in spite of the
obligation on the jail personnel to monitor people on a regular basis and
take action when needed. The number of people who die in custody is a
largely unknown by the general public. In the most recent legislative
session, activists got a bill passed (the Hardel Sherrell Act) in the
legislature dealing with this problem. Mr. Sherrell died in custody after
days of neglect, even though a jail nurse had reported his condition as
serious. The company providing medical care for a number of prisons
statewide has been fired and the doctor overseeing the company is being
investigated.
It can be safely assumed that there are many more deaths at the hands of
police accidentally than by direct and intentional means. These deaths,
known as "manslaughter", are nevertheless wrong and unnecessary, and are
avoidable by following the rules and regulations spelled out in the
extensive training given law enforcement trainees. So many deaths can be
been prevented simply by following guidelines and using common sense.
The list of Stolen Lives is growing as people become aware of it and wish
to have their loved one's names added. The amount of names on the list is
sad, and the stories are ones that create trauma that is ongoing through
generations. If you know of a name that should be on the list, please let
us know. You can contact us through our website, as cited above.
