US wireless has just finished installing near 34th Ave So and East 50th street
(a few blocks from 50th LRT station). The equipment is about 100-150' from me.
Sometime last night their signal came up as my prefered connection to public
City wifi (I believe with one hour free service)
Since then when I have tried to connect to my server, WiFi pops up and wont
let me connect. Nor will it let me use the 1 hour free service. Wifi keeps
bumping out my server on prefered list.
HAS anyone else had a similar problem ? Anyone know how to override it (i've
been thru changing preferred list, repair, disconnect, diagnose).
I am using the library system now but had trouble accessing that...US
internet wouldn't let me 'out' and on to the library until the 3rd try.
Keep get USI web page at every connection attempt...but at least I know I can
get one day svc. for $9.95 (+ charges?).
thanks for any help ...
best wishes,

I've been getting bumped off
my connection at home and at work for weeks. US Wireless was a bit smarmy
when I asked about it saying
that they'd never heard anyone complain before and the didn't have a fix. Then
they tried to sign me
up.On Wed, 7 May 2008 13:32:49 -0700 (PDT) C Luger <<email obscured>> wrote:>

I have the roving subscription so I use it when visiting my grandmother at 23rd and 38th Street (west of 38th Street Station). I know roving is not as good as in home, but from what I have noticed it seems to be as much about bandwidth as signal. I am constantly getting booted off weekday evenings. After 9PM or on weekend it is fine. That makes me wonder about their capacity. General solution. Get to the window that shows all the wireless signals your computer can see. Poke around the options. You can address it in one of three ways: 1. There will be someplace where you can set the USIWireless as "Manual" or "Not preferred" or something similar. 2. You can usually mark one or more wireless signals (e.g. your home wireless or the library's) as "preferred." 3. You may be able to set the order that your computer looks for wireless signals. Put your preferred networks (e.g. home or library) at the top. Since every network card seems to have a different software interface, I can't be any more specific. I did use option 1 in my usual coffee shop since the USI Wireless signal there was strong enough to be detected but provided poor service. Sheldon ................................. Ray Peterson, among others, was complaining abouthow bad his US Wireless
service wasat a Ventura Village meeting to Gary Schiff.Ray said it was only on
irregularly at different times and he did not know when it was actually working
so he could go on line. I mentioned that I used comcast with a wireless hub,
but I also had complaintsaboutthe City's wireless; because US Wireless would
come on and screw up my reception.
Gary interjected something really funny when he asked if I would please call
Ray when it was messing up my reception.SoRay could get on line! That received
quite the laughs from the membership. Humor is always appreciated, so thanks
Gary.
So Dan when you get bumped be sure to call your friends who have US Wireless.
Maybe they can finally get on line with their Mpls Issues post.

Actually, the USI irregularities cited by Ray and others in other
venues is no joking matter. I have a Kensington sniffer that indicates
strength of signal. I have been testing various antenna locations and
have found a wide variability. Roughly, 2/3 of antennas indicate a
signal strength of 80 - 100 percent. About 1/2 of the remaining 1/3
show strengths of 10 - 30 percent. These with the sniffer usually
kitty korner from the antenna. In my block there is an antenna that
generally shows 80% strength and 200 feet along the block the strength
falls to 20%. My sniffer does not indicate signal strength in watts
units but shows bars, hence the % references. I do not think people
are getting very much for their money. I hesitate to think of some of
the consequences of City public safety actions the rely on USI
Wireless service. I remember when Mpls City fathers brought in cable
TV as a no-compete franchise - it was a dog to say the most and the
City's wireless seems to have set an even lower standard. I understand
the wireless system tests by the USI's testing contractor awarded
superlative grades in all categories. Ho hum, so what else is new in
Mpls's city farce hall these days.

Well, those people who have good reception are getting a lot for their
money. They know who they are. (Between Qwest and Visi.com I pay
$50/month for 1.5Mb/s down, 1.0Mb/s up, quite a bit more for my DSL than
the USI customers pay.)
Those people who don't have good reception are mostly cancelling their
service. So they've got a loss for a month or two, but nothing major.
People who live in the middle of the block, or on the wrong side of
high-rises, mostly. Not good, but not the end of the world.
Could it be better? Sure. I'm looking forward to it being better, and
being able to buy roaming coverage for my existing service (if you run
servers, wifi can't totally replace wired).

Sure. But they're not going to rely on it (at least the part of it that
you and I can access). The City got a sweetheart deal on their regular
(wired) connectivity as part of the deal. The wireless stuff (and
especially the wireless stuff for people like you and me) was just an
add-on selling point.
Haven't heard about the free hour offer. Can anyone fill me in?
I have heard the City is testing the system for sign-off so I would
urge folks to contact their CMs if you have issues especially rude or
smarmy tech support. I would also post both good and bad things to
this list which will help in keeping everyone honest.
The issue of USIW's signal taking over the Wi-Fi on a computer is an
odd one. Happens often at our house (Seward) but I just have to switch
back to the local hub. Sheldon does have a good idea in telling your
computer to not connect to USIW if you're not a customer.

Some good suggestions have been made about dealing with this problem.
You haven't said anything to the contrary, but (for the benefit of
others) it's important to understand that in this unlicensed radio band,
interference from other (legal) users is something that is your own
responsibility to deal with. If your software keeps locking onto USI,
it's your problem, not theirs.
