Purely as a question of self-interest, John McCain's exit-the-stage
gambit makes sense. With cries of impending doom filling the air,
he's got nothing to gain by sticking around to discuss a subject he
ill understands and to be pelted with quotations of the Hoover-like
things he's already said, such as proclaiming the economy
"fundamentally strong" at the start of last week. Since Wall Street's
latest and grandest blowup just hours later, he's lost ground in the
polls day by day.
Minnesota's economy: far more than mortgages at stake
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/14669

Panic-invoked efforts in Washington to bail out financial
institutions in New York are missing the structural weaknesses of the
Minnesota economy by a country mile.

"I know Pat Leahy is a Deadhead. I would imagine that out of the 534
other members of Congress there are quite a few, although I doubt
theyāre in the closet. I think itās perfectly acceptable to be a
Deadhead. And Iām sure Norm Coleman will tell you all about 'Sugar
Magnolia.'"
Building more than boats with urban youth
http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/14620

"I decided to make a bent-shaft islet paddle out of cedar, pine and
walnut." said Brian Harper. He sat down to chat with me after
slipping into his work clothes, a plain white t-shirt and black and
white basketball shorts. With his hair braided, and black Nike
sneakers on his feet, Harper looks like a typical sixteen year old,
until he starts talking about boats. He smiles as I ask him to spell
"islet" for me, slowly. The paddle is for white water kayaking and
puts the paddle head at an angle. Nine months ago, he didn't even
know what an iselet was, but he smiles again when he tells me they
are currently building a skiff.

http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/node/14642
by Charles Hallman, Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder
If Black children are to be better educated, the responsibility must
lie primarily with the Black community. In that spirit, an estimated
125 persons attended a ācall to actionā community meeting Monday
night, September 22, at the Minneapolis Urban Leagueās North
Minneapolis office, for improving the cityās public schools.

The turnout on Tuesday night at the Ordway for the Minnesota Operaās
staging of Verdiās "Il trovatore" (The Troubadour) was impressive. A
bustling lobby and long line at the box office translated into a full
house. And people do dress for the occasionārumors of Minnesotans
wearing jeans to the opera proved to be mostly false. Itās good to
know there is a place in the Twin Cities to don oneās Oscar de la
Renta stiletto heels or, in the case of one elderly gentleman, oneās
kimono.

Film note: First-time director Chokes
http://tcdailyplanet.net/node/14681
by Jim Brunzell III, TC Daily Planet
It's been nearly ten years since director David Fincher boldly
brought cult writer Chuck Palahniukās "Fight Club" to the big screen.
Fincherās film will still be the Palahniuk film to top, which is bad
news for "Choke," the first directorial effort by character actor
Clark Gregg. It doesnāt quite reach the level of "Fight Club," but
Palahniukās name will be enough to draw crowds.
Protesting the war(s): Lessons from 1972

As the U.S. occupation of Iraq grinds into its sixth year and
activists address the militarized police response to protests at the
Republican National Convention, a remarkable just-published
historical document should be required reading. Ed Felienās "Take the
Streets!" was written in 1972, during and immediately after that
yearās tidal wave of Minnesota protests of the Vietnam War.

ARTS ORBIT | Weekend what's what 9/25-9/28: Parting is such sweet sorrow
http://tcdailyplanet.net/node/14657
by l'etoile magazine staff
As quickly as they appeared, the sweet summer months seem to be
bidding adieu before we had a chance to really get to know them. But
donāt cry too hard, the icy months are still aways off, and the
lovely autumn season will be sweeping in with all its gorgeously
colored glory soonāand that means fabulous fall fashion! Wool,
cashmere, suede and all those decadent textiles that go so well with
a harvest moon will soon be moved to the front of your closet. This
weekend, however, will probably be your last chance to rock those
short shortsāso live it up!
SINGLE WHITE FRINGE GEEK | How it started
http://tcdailyplanet.net/node/14651
by Matthew A. Everett
I was still closeted at the time, even to myself. Not that I was any
good at denial, I just clung to it as a strategy because thatās what
Iād always done. My devotion to Paul, and its reciprocation, was an
acceptable outlet. Halfway through the visit, I was already feeling
the tug of how it would feel when heād leave to return to Germany
again. My friend K Snodgrass wisely said, āYou can miss him when heās
gone. Donāt miss him while heās here.ā
