for Thursday, March 17
Mario Colloly Torres is a father, husband, and cleaner at Minneapolis Cub Foods
grocery stores. He's also a leader in the Centro de Trabajadores en Lucha
(Center of Workers United in Struggle, or CTUL) Campaign for Justice in Retail
Cleaning, and was part of the campaign's March 2 delegation to Cub Foods
corporate headquarters in Stillwater. Just two days later, like many a labor
leader before him, Colloly was fired by Cub and Carlson Building Maintenance in
retaliation for over a year of organizing.
Workers and allies of CTUL have engaged in a number of protests since then,
demanding Cub sign on to a code of conduct and reinstate the fired leader
Colloly. On Tuesday, March 15, they held a nonviolent picket and guerrilla
theatre action and as seen in this video from CTUL, a security guard assaulted
and pepper sprayed the group, sending one woman to the hospital. Workers will
meet again outside Cub at 5937 Nicollet Avenue at 11am on Thursday, calling
again on the company to end human rights abuses at its stores and announcing a
next step in the campaign.
