Tomorrow the City DFL will hold its endorsing convention at Edison High school
(2 blocks from NE library).
With 4 candidates and only 3 school board directorships open...this will be
an interesting convention.
2 state ballot issues will be discussed and voted on from the floor: the
'Davnie' amendment changing at-large directors to a mixed at-large/district
governance (similar to the Park Board model) and the Referendum Levy.
The school board candidates who have been running are:
1) Incumbent Lydia Lee
2) Jill Davis
3) Carla Bates
A newcomer has entered the race, Dan Miller.
His local Mpls-relevant credentials include serving as the Mayor's appointee
on the Mpls Library Board Advisory Committee from McKinsey & Co. that
recommended the Hennepin County Library Merger. Mr. Miller has received the
Mayor's endorsement (per a delegate e-mail 'blast' this morning).
McKinsey authored the MPS strategic plan. Altho the presentation to the
school board said a governance change was suggested but not approved, the
McKinsey presentation to the City Council listed a governance change as a
recommendation. That was enthusiastically endorsed by one council member who
suggested the school board governance be changed to the mayor's office.
In an interview with the Minnesota Monitor yesterday, when asked if he would
abide by the DFL endorsement he said ' No '...please see link for full
comment.
Please see the link for the article and follow-up interview including
background and comments on the endorsement procedure:

What was expected to be a fairly routine convention, may turn out to be very
interesting as Rules are fought over and endorsement jockeying occurs.
