Post in Mpls without Fireworks = Dull Dark Omaha?
I love fireworks. I loved the Christmas lights we stopped using about 15
years ago (lit by our coal and nuclear electricity sources). But there seems
to be increasing evidence that there are several ingredients in fireworks
that are harmful to human health and the environment, especially water -
perchlorate, etc. Some of these are especially harmful to the usual
susceptibles - pregnant women, children, you know. The upper Mississippi is
a place to be especially mindful of runoff, chemicals, solids like the
plastics involved in fireworks, etc.
I don't know that this was MPRB's first consideration in this decision, but
possibly some consolation. I understand improvements are being made in
fireworks, but in the meantime, perhaps limiting them around the river is
okay.
I also respect the argument about families spending time together, and
certainly traveling to the suburbs is cold comfort. It is a tough one with
no perfect answer.
