- *Ever get confused about the terms* *"community" and "neighborhood"* *as
they apply to parts of Minneapolis?* The city of Minneapolis is made up of
81 different neighborhoods that comprise 11 communities. The Standish
neighborhood is a part of the larger Powderhorn Community, and the Ericsson
neighborhood is a part of the larger Nokomis Community. Originally,
communities were the basic units for planning in Minneapolis, while
neighborhoods were areas that could be logically served by a single
elementary school.</pre>

I placed the flyer with tear-offs at the block event covering 21st Ave and
42nd St (and nearby blocks). About 1/2 dozen of the tabs were taken.

This was the perfect event to spread the word. Hopefully a few of my

Here is the form to print:
<a href="http://e-democracy.org/if/issuesforumsignupform-staneric.pdf">http://e-democracy.org/if/issuesforumsignupform-staneric.pdf</a>

You may also print the flyer with the pull-tabs:

If people go "oh, no I don't want my mail box filled." Let them know that the
forum has averaged 3 posts a day (only one if they sign up for the digest and
ZERO if they choose web-based) and the forum is not dominated by just a few
people. We are averaging close to a 20% posting participation rate each month -
which is unheard on on typical online forums.

Finally, if you find yourself without a sign-up sheet, tell people to "Google
standish ericsson" and click on the third result or visit e-democracy.org/se

want them! I don't use them! I know I can recycle them - but it's frustrating
to have to deal with them when I don't want them in the first place.

I've discovered that I'm not the only person who has carried them directly from
my front step to the recycle bin.

I've been looking for some kind of soluction to this problem, but no one seems
to have one.

The last time one of the companies delivered them to the office we were lucky
enough to be here, so I just told them not to leave them.

I just got all the old ones taken care of and today we came to the office to
find new ones - these are Yellow Book.

I called the number listed on the bag - sometimes it's hard to find a number -
and was referred to another number where I talked with a person who said she
would add the address to a do-not-deliver-list. I hope this works. I realize
this is just one of the multitude of phone book companies, but at least it's a
start.

If anyone else is tired of unwanted phone books, the number is 1-800-373-3280.

And if anyone else has discovered other solutions for other companies, I'd love
to know what they are. -- shirley</pre>

<pre>For those going to National Night Out, be sure to ask for a copy of the paper
survey from your block club leader about the
Minnehaha-Hiawatha corridor so you can fill it out.

Here is what Minnehaha Hiawatha Community Works project sent along:

"The Minnehaha-Hiawatha corridor from the Midtown Greenway to Minnehaha
Parkway has received increasing attention over the last few years. This
spring Hennepin County Community Works launched a two-year effort to develop
a Strategic Development Framework for the Minnehaha-Hiawatha corridor to
guide County, City, and other revitalization investments. These decisions
will be community driven and made in close collaboration with stakeholders.

As part of National Night Out, the Community Advisory Committee for this
effort partnered with the Minneapolis Police Department to provide all Block
Club leaders with a packet including information about this project and a
one-question survey."

<pre>The most effective way to grow our neighbors forum is to sign people up in

If you print a few sign-up pages and pass it around on a clipboard you can turn
national night out in to neighborhood year online!

Please let me know - email obscured - which block party(ies) you can
visit (see Ericsson list below), make a short announcement about forum and then
pass around a sign-up sheet. (If you can help cover multiple events, a few
clipboards and pens make handy tools.) After NNO we will collect the forms for
another typing "laptop party."

We are up to 229 members. Once we reach 400 we will have close to 10% of the
households in Standish and Ericsson communicating about local things that
matter (or are just plain fun) most days. Wow.

Here is the form to print:

Also, why not ask your party what the top three local issues are that they
would like to see discussed on the forum and we can compare notes on the forum.
Or simply plan to share a short summary of your block's evening with us all.
