SENA will host a community meeting to address issues of personal safety in the
area around the 38th Street LRT station (see the previous posts on this forum).
We are still working on some of the details – I will add those to this forum as
they develop.
The meeting will be:
Thursday, June 18th, 7:00 p.m.
Greater Friendship Church, 2600 E. 38th Street
Our goals for the meeting are:
1. Identify the problems
2. Clarify roles
3. Begin work on creative solutions. As Lea Johnson said in her earlier post,
“While the authorities can support our efforts, making the neighborhood safer
starts with us.” How can we all work together to make it better?
So far the following officials have agreed to attend:
• Council Member Gary Schiff
• Council Member Sandy Colvin Roy
• CCP/SAFE Crime Prevention Specialist Karen Notsch
• MPD – 3rd Precinct – Sgt. Chris Hudok
• Metro Transit – Community Outreach, Jill Hentges (Jill is also working on
securing a representative from Metro Transit Police)
Others we have contacted:
• Hennepin Co Commissioner Peter McLaughlin is not available. (He has a
meeting on another community issue.) There is a possibility his aide or
another representative may come.
• John Bell of Klodt Properties will be out of town and unable to attend. He
is definitely interested in the issue and might be able to send a
representative.
As soon as we have an agenda set we will develop a flyer and post it on the
forum. I’ll be asking all of you for assistance in distributing the flyer so
we can make sure as many people as possible know about the meeting.
Please continue to watch the forum for additional details.
Shirley, this is fantastic!!! Thanks for coordinating this. I will definitely
be there.
In preparation for the meeting, can you or someone else, ask the MPD and/or
Metro Transit to provide us with a pre- and post-lightrail crime summary around
the 38th station area? I'd love to hear this information at the meeting. I
think this context would be very helpful. Even though it is fairly obvious
that safety has changed around the lightrail area (after all, it is the reason
for this meeting), a summary of what we're dealing with would help everyone
understand the situation better. Just a thought.
I look forward to furthering this conversation next week.
Greetings, all.
Yes, I will attend the June 18 meeting with Captain Mike LaVine of the Metro
Transit Police Department. Captain LaVine will have some statistics from the
38th Street Station platform as well as some investigation information. I will
try and get in touch with Sgt. Chris Hudok to be certain we bring as much data
as is available. Our historical data prior to June 2004 is somewhat limited
(limited to bus service in the area prior to Hiawatha) but we should be able to
work with the Minneapolis Police Department to provide useful information for
our upcoming conversation. I am particularly excited about agenda item #3 as we
move together toward a positive outcome from a tragic incident.
I look forward to meeting everyone.

I'm attaching a flyer for the meeting on June 18th.
Please print it and share it with as many people as possible. If you can share
it with your block, feel free to do that.
If you can distribute flyers but don't have the capacity to produce them,
contact the SENA office and we can arrange to get flyers to you.
If you are intending to distribute flyers to a particular area, please post
that so others know what areas have already been covered.
Let me know if you have any questions.

7:00 - Thursday - Greater Friendship Church - 2600 E. 38th St.
We had a great meeting last Thursday. Several people have commented to me about what a great neighborhood this is and how pleased they are that people want to work together to solve a problem. Some who were unable to attend asked for information about what happened. I will attach a word document with my notes from the meeting. As I say in the document - These notes are very linear – comments, questions, concerns, responses – in the order they were presented at the meeting. I was unable to capture everything, but have tried to catch the highlights. A couple of other things to highlight - If you would like to work on this and other Quality of Life issues, please consider getting involved with SENA's Quality of Life Committee. The group generally meets the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 at the SENA office. If you need more information or would like to be added to the list for that committee contact the SENA office at "office at standish-ericsson.org" Consider becoming a block club leader or helping to start a block club on your block if you don't have one. You can find out more at http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crime-prevention/docs/CPBL.pdf You can find lots of other good crime prevention information at the CCP/SAFE website. http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crime-prevention/ Including this document which details when to use 911 and when to use 311. http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crime-prevention/docs/When_and_how_911-311.pdf
