Dear Standish-Ericsson Neighbors Forum members,
Sam Newberg here, writing as a Forum member and also as part of the
Minnehaha-Hiawatha Corridor Community Advisory Committee. As Forum moderator
Steven Clift announced late last week, today we're launching a two-week
online event on our Forum to get your input about the future of the
corridor.
First, a little background: The Minnehaha-Hiawatha corridor from the Midtown
Greenway to Minnehaha Parkway will be the focus of major county investments
over the next several years. In spring 2008 the county began a two-year
effort to determine which types of investments could best revitalize the
corridor and improve the quality of life for people who live work, travel,
shop, and enjoy the area.
These decisions will be community driven and made in close collaboration
with stakeholders, and as part of the Community Advisory Committee, I'm
helping gather ideas from a wide variety of stakeholders -- like all of you!
We need your perspectives to help us develop an implementation strategy that
will leverage strategic investments in the corridor area to address issues
and priorities, optimize revitalization opportunities, and reflect community
values. While the direct investments will be only within the corridor, as
neighbors we are important stakeholders and our voices count.
The question I am posing to all of you is this: What kinds of improvements
in the corridor do you think would create a more vibrant community and
increase your quality of life?
Over the next two weeks, all your great ideas posed under this subject line
will be compiled and included with other stakeholder input as part of our
decision-making process.

Thanks Sam, this is great. To get your comments in the right bucket so to
speak, even if you've posted about corridor-related topics in the past, do so
again by press "Reply-to-All" via e-mail or "Add" on the website on this topic.
For those who like to visualize things, I've converted their map link to simple
image and uploaded to the site.
So let's fire away on Sam's question:
What kinds of improvements in the corridor do you think would create a more
vibrant community and increase your quality of life?

One comment, for now. Building a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over
Hiawatha, at approximately 38th or 42nd Street would encourage
residents from both sides of Hiawatha to patronize businesses on the
other side, foster community-building, and provide a safer route
across this busy highway.

Nathan,
That idea should be (but may not as yet) factored in the redevelopment plans
for 38th & Hiawatha. Great great suggestion.

I have a few ideas:
1. Ribbon of Color - The embankment along the light rail line would be perfect
for extensive wild flower plantings and naturalized perennials. I say the more
color the better (versus strictly native) as long as the plants can tolerate
dry spells. You could time flowering so various weeks would show different
colors.
2. 24 Hour Graffiti Removal, The World's Biggest Graffiti Wall - I'd contract
for five years with a company/non-profit to guarantee 24 hour removal of
graffiti in this graffiti prone area. Toward the north of the area, why not
create a dramatic regulated mural/graffiti wall run by the same group.
3. Fully Accessible Indoor/Outdoor Park right at a Light Rail Stop - Like
indoor Edinburgh Park in Edina, The Blast in Eagan, etc. along with an outdoor
play area that is also fully accessible - http://www.boundlessplaygrounds.org -
where a parent in a wheelchair (think recent war veterans) can play with their
child at the highest point. With Light Rail and buses, this could be the most
accessible park in the country not requiring someone to drive there.
4. Major Urban Rework of Lake Street Light Rail Area - This is a twenty year
thing, but like Paris "suburban" subway stops and some other places I've been
you could plan for a major development in this location. High density, high
rise, with "2nd" floor park/green space right up to the station. Rough idea.
:-)

Hey everyone, thanks for your ideas so far. These are great. Keep them
coming! Remember, we are brainstorming, so any idea is welcome.
The crossing of Hiawatha is particularly relevant, since so many of us do
it, by car, by bike, on foot, etc. A bridge is pretty expensive, and the
tall power lines on the other side make it tough to "land" a bridge on the
other side. Have any of you seen better crosswalks in other cities or
countries?
Think about if and how you use the area between Hiawatha and Minnehaha, from
the Midtown Greenway down to Minnehaha Parkway. What would you like to see
change?

Hmmm. I wonder if they ever sold that chunk of skyway:
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/bfs/1001523443.html
$80,000 plus two ramps sounds a lot more reasonable than, what was it, $7
million? Plus it's all-weather.
83 ft. long. How far does that get you across the intersection...?

This is a long term investment over years and possibly decades. Hennepin
County's investment starts with around $9-10 million, but the key is for
these funds to LEVERAGE lots of other public and private investments.
For examples of the types of projects the County has funded on corridor
projects in the past, view this short PowerPoint:

Thanks for soliciting input!
1) First, thinking big: How about a conservatory or some type of indoor green
space/garden? Include a greenhouse to raise seedlings for neighbors gardens.
And a place to hold neighborhood plant-swaps, showcase block "green"
initiatives, teach green gardening methods, etc.
Or an (intergenerational) community center on Hiawatha for neighborhoods on
both sides of the corridor? Perhaps a kind of physical manifestation of
"e-democracy" forums?
2) I may have missed this -- does the plan include a survey (or some
successful examples) of transformations of transportation/industrial corridors
or similar areas in other cities in the US or elsewhere?
3) To me personally, "corridor" evokes a way to get somewhere, rather than a
destination in itself. Perhaps we need to recreate or reinforce awareness of a
grid (drawing more attention to cross-streets) rather than a traffic artery,
helping to knit the neighborhoods on either side of 55 together again. A
newcomer could drive Hiawatha without becoming aware of the neighborhoods of
historic bungalows on either side! I'm not a traffic planner, but perhaps
even some combination of small design features at each intersection could
help?
-- Light each crossing with distinctive (bungalow-era?) lamp posts which
continue along the "side" streets (ribbons of light which CROSS the highway,
rather than emphasize its course).
-- Focus attention on pedestrian crossings with brick cross walks across the
highway...
--Define the crosswalks on each side of the highway with permanent planters
(flowers or low-growing evergreen shrubs).
4) Ways to make the corridor brighter:
-- Include evergreens in plantings along corridor for year-round greenery.
--If there isn't one in the works already, how about a colorful banner to hang
from posts at intervals?
I look forward to seeing this project progress!

Martha,
These are some very good ideas, exactly what we are looking for from
residents in SENA.
What does everyone think about these ideas, specifically the conservatory,
intergenerational space, improved crossing of Hiawatha, public art,
greenery?
Input, please. Keep it coming.
Thanks!

I second Martha's idea and expand on it by suggesting this would be a great
location for a co-op. Perhaps an indoor garden/greenhouse on one side, co-op on
the other. In the warm months there could be an outdoor market of
fruits/veggies/flowers/plants and organic/gardening oriented gift items.
Convenient, healthy grocery shopping accessible by light rail all year round.
Would also create a visual enhancement to the corridor and set the tone for
additional greenery/plantings in the area.

Apologies!
I left out a vital sentence in my vision of a community center. In addition to
the intergenerational piece, it would be a real asset to the lives of all
residents here if such a center was also committed to responding to and
involving our culturally diverse communities, in each phase of development and
operation. The center could reflect who WE really are. In recent years, I
have appreciated the mid-town YWCA n Corcoran) as a racially integrated local
institution. Hopefully, there are other sites I am not familiar with! But I
want to clearly express support for a culturally and racially integrated, as
well as an intergenerational center!
Thanks for listening!

Apologies!
I left out a vital sentence in my vision of a community center. In addition
to the intergenerational piece, it would be a real asset to the lives of all
residents here if such a center was also committed to responding to and
involving our culturally diverse communities, in each phase of development
and operation. The center could reflect who WE really are. In recent

If nobody has mentioned these .... here are my selfish thoughts...
I like to run around the Nokomis and Hiawatha Lakes (including the
golf course) ...
1.) So, I would like a better trail around the north side of
Hiawatha and along the west side of the golf course with an
intelligent connection to the Nokomis/parkway trails. Right now there
is a weird transition on the west side of the golf course -- and in
one spot there isn't even a sidewalk at all (next to the funeral home
on the parkway).
2.) Also, I would like to see the inside path around Nokomis with a
few more lights (especially around the south end). Currently there
are some very dark areas.
I have two young kids that I worry will run out into 28th Ave
3.) I would like to see the park and ball diamond on 28th and 44th
with a fence (or some divider) along 28th Ave -- not sure the most
appropriate type... chain link? Or maybe a hedge row... I'm not
sure... I just worry about kids running out onto the street. And it
doesn't have to run the length of the lake... just mostly down by the
park where the kids are likely to be running wild.
4.) If there is anyway to cleanup the Hiawatha Lake so we can swim in
it ... that would be sweet.
5.) Finally, having a cafe, restaurant, or wine bar (with patio
seating) either on Lake Nokomis, or close enough to overlook it (maybe
on the hill by the YMCA), would be so sweet. I love the "Tin Fish"
place on Calhoun... what a great way to get people down by one of the
cities greatest treasures. It doesn't have to be too big, or overly
noisy...(heck it would be hard to be louder than the airplanes
anyway....
Ok ... those are some of the things I would like to see... Just my 0.02...
Cheers,
Casey

Casey,
These are all very good ideas, and in fact are some of the things the SENA
board has been thinking about. For all residents of our neighborhood, we
welcome your involvement on one of the many SENA committees.
However, I need to remind everyone that this particular discussion focuses
on the Minnehaha-Hiawatha corridor, everything between Minnehaha and
Hiawatha Avenue, and from the Midtown Greenway to the Minnehaha Parkway.
This is the area on which any Hennepin County investments will be focused.
Improvements that occur there should affect our neighborhood in a positive
way.
So please keep the ideas coming, but keep in mind we are talking about the
Hiawatha-Minnehaha corridor.
Thanks!
