my name is Sean Connaughty and I am an artist, teacher and resident of Standish
Ericsson neighborhood. Our neighborhood is in the sub watershed of Lake
Hiawatha. This means that most of the streets and storm drains in our community
empty unfiltered into Lake Hiawatha, others empty into The Mississippi River
and Minnehaha Creek . I am reaching out to the community to try to reduce
pollution in our waters and raise awareness about how our storm sewer systems
work. 3,000 lbs. or 150 large bags of litter have been removed from the Lake
since 2015. Despite these efforts the Lake is full of litter from recent rains.
The Lake is home to wildlife and is connected to the larger watershed via
Minnehaha Creek and leads to the Mississippi River where we get our drinking
water. In an attempt to reach out to community members who are littering on our
streets I have made this Public Service Announcement (PSA). All parts of our
community are represented in the litter and pollution found in the Lake. You
can also see the results of our Trash Survey in the attached pdf. The PSA video
I made will hopefully make people aware of the impact littering and pollution
has on our waters. please watch and share the PSA. Thank you so much for your
attention, collectively we can protect and preserve our waters.
