Noting all the avid gardeners from the introductions, let's use this
topic to post offers of plants to share this spring.
Once this snow disappears, I am planning to dig out about half the width
of a 30 foot row of traditional orange daylilies. We are on the short
block and they pretty much cover my 5 foot "yard" along the alley. I'll
post a notice when I dig them up on this forum topics when I place them
on the curb in front of my house.
I don't need anything in exchange, but I'll gladly give some green thumb
love to:
1. Hostas - particularly those big blue green ones
2. Blackberries - To keep my raspberries company. (I should have some
runners to share as well)
3. Iris - Anything not purple. :-)
4. Rock Garden Plants or perennial Thyme I can grow between bricks as a
low traffic ground cover aside my new "old" granite cobble patio (yes,
once done I'll have a forum gathering on my patio to celebrate or something)
5. Strawberries that really produce - I have lots of non-producing
plants to give away that came from the Soo Line Community Garden years
ago. :-)
6. Tiger Lilies - I want to put in some really tall ones to bap, I mean
slow down the alley traffic with their beauty.
Cheers,
Steven Clift
I believe the garden club hosts a plant swap in the spring. It is normally
noted in the SENA Newsletter. I've gotten dome great plants there in the
past.

Unfortunately the SENA Garden Club no longer meets, so there's no plant swap
available there. The Garden Club member I talked to said they had stopped
doing the swap after attendance fell - they believed it was because there are
several other groups also doing swaps. So there may be some area swaps - I
don't know what they are.
While we're talking plants - we could use some extra hardy, durable plants for
the boulevard in front of the SENA office. We'd love to make that space look
better but it's a pretty hard place to get something to survive - what with
foot traffic, vehicle exhaust, etc. If anyone has advice or excess plants to
offer, we're open to either.
The SENA office received this notice of a plant swap for our newsletter - too
late to make the deadline. But I'll post it here for those of you interested
in Plant Swaps:
Perennial Swap is being held at Word Of Grace Baptist Church, 2120 East 38th
Street, Mpls on Sat May 17, 9a-11a. Come meet other garden enthusiasts and
exchange gardening information. This swap is for perennials and gardening
related items such as bird houses, gardening books, bird baths and garden
ornaments. . No house plants or annuals. We are asking for plants that are well
established, of good size and in gallon pots or larger. PLEASE (if possible)
MARK ALL PLANT MATERIALS WITH THE PLANT NAME AND CARE REQUIRED.
Complimentary garden pinwheels and refreshments will be available.
Any questions? Call Cheri at 612-728-0831.
Finally, a decent day! The first batch of traditional orange daylilies - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemerocallis_fulva - are ready for the taking. First come, first serve. I have 5 boxes (see photo link below) - take one, take all five! I'll let the group know when they are gone. I plan to put out a second batch. Pick them up at 3211 E. 44th Street - right on the curb near the alley - can't miss them. Also, after I put wood chips along the alley the other year I seemed to create the perfect seeding ground for a mixed variety of purple, pink, and white phlox (2'-4') that has probably been here for 50 years, so if you want some of those let me know or watch for my next Plant Swap post. I will also have some kind of tall 6'-8' yellow flower - someone called it a perennial sunflower once that I need to dig away from the alley. You'd definitely want to grow this against a wall or fence. It flowers from July to September! Cheers, Steven Clift
The following file was added to this topic:
The first batch of daylilies disappeared within 24 hours.
I am out of diaper boxes so I've put the second and final bunch right on the
curb ready for pick-up. Bring a box, pickle bucket, or something and grab as
many as you like. A few clusters were chopped up on top by water overflowing my
gutters above, but they will grow just fine.
Sunday looks to be a great day to get out in the yard.
Pick them up at 3211 E. 44th Street - right on the curb near the alley - can't
miss them.
Also, I have about seven chunks of those yellow flowers I mentioned before:

Finally, if you'd like some phlox or I forget to mention as much lily of the
valley as you like, just drop me a note: clift (at) publicus.net

P.S. You have perennials you are dividing, feel free to add them to this topic
or press reply via e-mail (if replying via e-mail it is alway best to delete
the content of the previous e-mail).
PPNA - Powderhorn Park - has an organized plant swap. http://ppna.org/node/123
Speaking of gardening ... how about a virtual plant swap followed by a
meet up at my home say, Sat. Apr 25 from 10 am - 12 Noon?
I will definitely have Lily of the Valley to share. On request I'll
have more orange daylillies. I have some sort of spicy mustard green
which reseeds itself each year as well.
I also have some odd ball Asian bean seeds from last season that
should still be worth a try and some exotic ornamental corn (for the
raccoons I suppose).
I am looking for raspberries and everbearing strawberries ... anything
my kids can eat to keep them occupied while I am weeding. :-) I'll
also take misc. perennials to plant along the alley. (Some day I'd
like to see a campaign to fill out alleys with very hardy low
water/heat tolerant perennials where tufts of weeds and grass are
now.)
This year I ordered some interesting heirloom tomato plants by mail
... so if you are seed saver, let me know later in the year. I don't
have the space to start plants from seed, so I'll trade you some seeds
for a couple seedlings in the spring.
Cheers,
Steven Clift
Hi neighbors-
I moved into my place in August so I don't have any plants to share yet but if
anyone needs to get rid of anything, I'd be happy to come over and dig out what
you don't want anymore.
I'm getting ready to thin my perennial gardens, rather then toss good plants
in my compost pile I wondered if there was still an organized plant swap for
our neighborhood?
If not would people be interested in having one?
We could have it here at Tillie's Bean if a few people were willing to help
plan it.
Le me know if you are interested.

I can bring some Lilly of the Valley and phlox.
I am looking for raspberries and good producing strawberry plants.

P.S. When is Dowling having their plant sale?
The Dowling Plant Sale is May 16th.
There will be a veritable forest of tomatoes and eggplants and peppers, and
lots of unusual flowers for your gardens. Buy some plants from us and make our
bees happy.
