This is the last chance for folks to drop by Clicquot Club, spend a
little money, and wish Brian and his staff well. Due to the decrease in
business arising from the economic downturn, he plans to close his
business as of 8:00 p.m. tonight. No more super chocolate cake,
chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven (if you time it right), and
the best chai in town, as well as the signature Cafe Clicquot.
What are we doing to support existing Seward small retail businesses?
Let's have fieldtrips to existing businesses and tell them we want them
to stay in the neighborhood. Small local businesses put more money
back into the community and employ our neighbors.

I'm sad to see Cliquot go away. I didn't get there often, but I
enjoyed the pizza and they made good coffee. It was also a nice place
to sit outside in the summer.
But I have to say that they did have very heavy competition right down
the block at the Birchwood. I liked the desserts there much more and
you could argue that the menu is better.
We have a lot of great restaurants in our neighborhood, located all
over the place. I would suggest you head down to the Himalayan soon to
make sure we don't lose them and the diversity they provide. There is
also the Indian place just past the (new) Co-op.

This is a real shame, especially since this has come up so suddenly.
I'm sure the holidays are an especially tough time. Clicquot was my
favorite coffee shop in the twin cities. The huge menu, great deserts,
and lots of coffee meant I could almost always find an excuse to work
there on the fast wifi and plentiful power outlets. Darn.

Oh, by the way, I liked the Clicquot's price points.

This is very disappointing and surprising. Are you sure?
I remember how long and hard Brian worked to turn the old "williams" building
around and how long it sat empty until he came along. And what an upgrade it
was! This is not unlike Pi in some ways, but having this happen on such a key
residential corner makes it hurt in a special way. It is especially hard when
(like Pi) we get such short notice of trouble coming and can't really do
anything to increase shopping there etc. As far as I know Brian was renting
the place. I do hope is not too far in the hole and lands on his feet. The
club will be dearly missed.

We live on the Cliquot block and are completely surprised. As a business
owner, I would have appreciated knowing about their struggles earlier on. This
forum needs to be more welcoming to business concerns going into these lean
times. So sorry to hear.

Well, let's get the businesses on the forum. I've invited Seward Co-op
and I'm still waiting.
Get a name and the email and send it along to me and I'll put them on the list.

I think a good next step (if it hasn;t been tried already) would be to work
through the Seward Civic and Commerce Association. I suspect they would be
glad to help publicize the list in their emails and perhaps also with a little

meeting.
To help get the ball rolling I to the liberty to send this message to Mary

Below is a message that I sent out yesterday to a number of folks. Thanks to
Peter Fleck I am now a member of the mpls-seward forum and can send you all
the message.
I am so sorry to hear about the closing of the Cliquot. This comes on the
heals of the closing of the Pi club. Both businesses had made a substantial
investment in our community. Being at the hardware store I hear almost every
day
from local owners of the challenges that our local businesses face. Business
has softened or in some cases dropped significantly and expenses continue to
go up in all categories. Many businesses had 30% increases in their property
taxes this year.
SCCA is working on a marketing campaign for local businesses. It's in line
with our live, shop, dine, work and play in Seward theme. We welcome ideas on
how SCCA can help keep Seward strong. Our next meeting is at Wells Fargo on
Wednesday Janaury 21st at 11:45. The Himalyan will be catering the lunch.
There will be a sign-up list for the seward forum at the meeting and we will
include information on joining it in our February newsletter.Send me an e-mail
if
you will be attending so we can have an accurate head count. Jim Welna SCCA
