Here is a summary of the current DRAFT of the vision statement: "We envision Franklin Avenue as a well designed place that reflects the urban character of the Seward neighborhood. "We envision Franklin Avenue as an active, interesting and safe place for all pedestrians. "We envision Franklin Avenue as a destination that draws people into our unique neighborhood. "We envision Seward as a place where a strong local economy and grass-roots activism meet. "We envision Franklin Avenue as a well-cared for and well maintained place where people can gather throughout the day and into the evening during all seasons. "We envision Franklin Avenue as a place that contributes to the environmental health of both our neighborhood and the world." Take a look at the whole draft vision statement at http://www.FranklinAvenue.us Then tell us what you think either at the SNG Board Meeting/Pot luck on Wednesday at Matthews or join one of the task force meetings (meeting times and locations at http://www.FranklinAvenue.us ................................ This sounds great. Thanks for all the work that went into it.
I do hope we can make Franklin Avenue pedestrian friendly. It really
isn't right now. I would love to see something like they did to
Franklin where it crosses Phillips Neighborhood.
We need more safe crossing areas.
This is an idea for the Movement Task Force vision statement. I don't know if
it would enhance or detract from the goals of the task force.
What about making Franklin Ave a one-way westbound from Riverside to 20th Ave,
and 9th Street a one-way eastbound (it already is) from 20th Ave to Riverside.
But to take it a step further, reduce the westbound one-way Franklin Ave to one
lane, and a bike lane on each side: southside of Franklin would be an
eastbound bike lane (because it is a natural extension for bikers going TO the
Franklin ave bridge) and the northside of Franklin would be a westbound lane
(because it is a natural extension for bikers coming FROM the Franklin ave
bridge.)
Ironic suggestion, given downtown is converting to two-way streets.
I do like the one-lane and bikes suggestion, but can't imagine it
would get far.

This is the type of thinking we need if we are to encourage bike riding in the city. This would serve the U of M well and I'm sure see lots of use by students. It could make for a really lovely Franklin Avenue experience. Until we curb the traffic flow on Franklin, it's just not pedestrian friendly. I've heard that a pedestrian crossing will be put in place on 24th Avenue. Robin or Cam, can you tell us the progress on that? It is very difficult crossing during rush hour.
