Hello,
I think that this should be given a lot of thought, especially considering the
amount of space and upkeep required to do it well. If we cannot accommodate all
of the soccer and other human requests for space in the park--does it make
sense to set aside a sizeable amount of land for dogs?
Also, considering our infrastructure issues with upkeep on basics like handicap
accessibility is this where we want limited infrastructure time and dollars
spent?
Sorry about confidentiality stuff at the end. The site won't let me switch
emails (something is broken). Will try again tomorrow.

I'm a long-time dog owner and love off-leash parks - when done well.
There needs to be a LOT of room and some landscaping to create a few separate
spaces and fencing around the whole thing. This would have an impact on the
flow of space in Powderhorn Park. Here's a nice, short article to help
understand some of the issues: http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_park

We have SO much room in the park that it seems completely possible to have some
dog-specific space as well. Thanks for reading.

I'd rather see money go towards better playgrounds, repaved paths, and security

I love dogs and used to have a big black lab/shepherd mix. I have not had a dog
in the city nor have I spent time in a dog park. But I live on the park and
since this topic came up I've wondered what it would be like to have a dog park
somewhere in Powderhorn.
I was very interested to read David Woolley's opinion that he would not want to
live next to a dog park, that the noise and sight of a dog park are a problem
even to a dog owner and dog park user. That makes me very wary of a dog park on
the perimeter of Poho Park because there are residents living on all sides.
Thanks for the Wiki article on dog parks Beth. Very informative.
As a runner in the park three or so early mornings a week, I am very
aware of the various approaches to dog ownership/partnership. First
let me state that I am an animal lover of all stripes. I love
domesticated creatures, but share a special place in my heart for the
wild denizens of the park (yes that includes squirrels.) I am always
more than a bit upset when a dog owner allows their dog to free range
off-leash and harass the herons, ducks, geese, turtles, squrrels,
destroy nesting habitat along the shore as well as chase me, etc. I'd
say in the morning, it is about 1/4 of all dogs I encounter. Sometimes
there are dog fights and yes some of the owners are clueless as to how
to break up a fight.
Now I am sure that most of these dogs will not bite me as I race by
and I try to be cheery about it when the owner says, "Oh he doesn't
bite. Do you __________?" (insert amusing name here.) Having been bit
by a Rot a few years back and sent to the hospital I have some
difficulty.
A dog park is a nice IDEA to kick around and I love all of the
spirited dialogue-- but in the meantime: Powderhorn is not a dog park.
Quit treating it as one. I have had many conversations with people who
call Powderhorn their unofficial dog park- with a wink and a nod. You
may not be aware of the ecological damage to other animal and plant
environments when you allow your dog to freely roam - not to mention
the fear factor that many runners face when met with an unleashed
furry friend.
I will continue to run in the park in the morning. Just be aware that
I will redouble my efforts to speak up- (though I am shy about
it)-since I think it is really uncool and irresponsible to allow dogs
off-leash in a non-designated park area. This whole conversation has
struck a nerve! lol!
Respectfully,
Cynthia Freeman
