Dear 6th Ward Friend:
In the age of Donald Trump and the divisive, discriminatory, and deceitful
politics he brings, it’s up to us to fight against these negative tactics and
for Progressive values. We do this by being positive and truthful.
This is more than policy to me – it’s personal. I was once a child refugee,
fleeing my war-torn home country. I was raised by a single mother in London,
and I learned how important safety nets like the National Health Service,
public housing, and free education are. As a Somali-American and as a Muslim,
I know firsthand what it’s like to be judged based upon religion and skin
color.
These experiences motivate me to stand up for our entire Minneapolis
community—regardless of race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
Recently, a group of people who do not live in the 6th Ward questioned my
commitment to our LGBTQ friends and neighbors. Prior to receiving the DFL
endorsement, I sent a letter in May, which many of you received. I said this:
“I want to affirm clearly that I absolutely stand with and support the
Minneapolis LGBTQ community. At just the start of this year, I coauthored a
resolution to form the city’s first Transgender Equity Council, and I have
always supported marriage equality. Love between two consenting adults is an
amazing thing, something that should always be celebrated.”
I said that then and I stand by those words today: I support full marriage
equality for all Minnesotans. Any person who tells you otherwise is trying to
deceive you in the last days of this campaign. Those negative tactics are
exactly what we need to reject.
In my first term, I joined my colleagues in declaring June LGBTQ Pride Month
and authored a resolution to strengthen our city’s Public Accommodations
Antidiscrimination Law in response to the couple from Indiana being denied the
services of a bakery because of whom they chose to love. Discrimination like
that, or of any kind, should not have a place in our community.
Together, we can build a more inclusive Minneapolis, but I need your help!
While our opponent has repeatedly resorted to negative personal attacks and
deception, to quote Michelle Obama, I believe that “when they go low, we go
high”. As the DFL and Labor Endorsed candidate in Ward 6, I ask for your vote
on November 7th. Let’s stand together and build a Minneapolis that is
welcoming to all of us.
