Attention Waite Park Residents and Business Owners:
Please join the Waite Park Community Council for the Annual Town Hall Meeting
on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Waite Park Community Center (1810
34th Avenue NE). We will be adopting the 2010 budget and electing a president,
vice president, and seven board members.
The meeting will focus on housing. Holly Holt, a Waite Park resident and a
realtor with Keller Williams, will discuss the neighborhood real estate market
and the number of homes in foreclosure. Cheryl Hoban, a loan officer with
Residential Mortgage Group, will speak about available credit and mortgage
programs. The council plans to allocate funds for a low-interest revolving
loan program, and Denise Eloundou, of Northeast Housing Resource Center, will
explain the program.
Two of our local representatives will also be present at this meeting: Kevin
Reich, Ward 1 City Councilman, and Doron Clark, Neighborhood and Community
Engagement Commission Representative.
We've just been informed that our planned migration to a new server needs to happen sooner than planned. Be on the lookout for a German Shepherd in NE Mpls east of Central and North
of 18th Ave. This dog got loose from St. Anthony and her owners are
desperately trying to find her. Her name is Shilo. If you see her or are
able to catch her, please contact Animal Control via 311! Thank you.
Hey all, Just wanted to pass along information about an important benefit coming up in March (details below). Tom Olsen, of Tom's Style & Tanning<http://www.tomsstyleandtanning.com/>, has been unable to work for several months while going through treatment for cancer. Tom's Style & Tanning (a member of the Northeast Neighbors & Business Association<http://www.northeastnba.com/>) has operated on the corner of Lowry & Central for 37 years. Tom and his wife Colleen have been fixtures in the Northeast community for years. They've volunteered countless hours in Northeast helping others, helping to improve the neighborhood and working to improve the business corridor on Central Avenue. It wasn't long ago that Tom and Colleen suffered the complete loss of their business and property in the 2005 fire that wiped out businesses and residences on the corner of Lowry/Central. They rebuilt their business from scratch and have had to deal with many complex issues following the fire, to now be hit with Tom's illness and inability to work and enjoy the things he loves to do. Please plan to attend the benefit, which will help to cover Tom's medical bills and lost wages. You can also help by donating items for the silent auction, or helping with the planning of the event. To help, contact Jesse Olsen at 612.581.7157 or <email obscured>. Saturday, March 27, 2010 Benefit/fundraiser for Tom Olsen (Tom's Style & Tanning) NENBA member Tom Olsen is battling cancer, and this benefit will help to raise funds for his ongoing medical bills and lost wages while he is unable to work. Spaghetti dinner, silent auction, door prizes and free beer. Cost $20/adults, $10/children, under 5 admitted free. Purchase tickets at Tom's shop or call 612.581.7157. Time: 6 - 9 p.m. Location: Moose Bar and Grille, 356 Monroe St. NE
Greetings all,
I joined the NE Mpls issues forum in December and have a few moments now to
tell you a little bit about myself.
I’ve been a resident of Northeast Minneapolis since 1995 and have lived in the
Waite Park neighborhood since 2003 (lived in the Audubon Park neighborhood
prior to that).
I’ve spent many years being involved with Northeast organizations, neighborhood
groups and volunteer projects.
What I like about Northeast:
One I like that is authentic though not particularly fancy and with delicious Indian cuisine is Nalapak in Columbia Heights on Central. http://www.nalapak.com/ The one thing I noticed last time I went was that we were one of the few non-Indian customers there, and the place was packed. Jessica Wicks Sheridan, NE Mpls
Looking for ideas, profiles, and on activities for families and kids to do in
NE for my online Minneapolis Family Activities Examiner post. Want to highlight
the great things happening in NE that do not get the publicity. Looking for
interesting long term neighbors to interview too for the Audubon newsletter.
If you have an idea, please let me know. I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks. Robin

Subject: [Mpls-NE] New Streetlights in the Sheridan Neighborhood
I'm up early and skimming City Council committee agendas.
It looks like the Transportation & Public Works Committee may sign-off
this morning on new streetlights for 13th Ave. NE and 2nd St. NE.
Here's from the agenda materials:
Subject: Sheridan neighborhood requested streetlight project on 13th
Ave NE and 2nd St NE
Recommendation:
a. Authorize proper city officials to enter into an agreement with
Sheridan Neighborhood Organization (SNO) and the Minneapolis
Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) to facilitate the
installation of low level street lighting along 13th Ave NE between
Main St. and 6th St NE and along 2nd St NE between 12th and 14th Ave
NE.
b. Increase Traffic and Parking Services field operations capital
expense fund 04100-9010943 by $300,000 to be 100% reimbursed by SNO
and NRP into 04100-9010943-322502 revenue for the installation of
street lighting on 13th Ave NE and 2nd St NE.
Background/Supporting Information
The Sheridan Neighborhood Organization (SNO) has sought to install low
level pedestrian lights in the business corridor of 13th Ave NE and
the adjacent blocks of 2nd Street NE. The SNO has committed to
covering 10% of the project from their general fund and has received
permission from the Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program
(NRP) to allocate neighborhood dedicated funds to cover the other 90%
up to a total of $266,400. The project revenues are:
$266,400 SNO NRP funds
$ 29,600 SNO general funds
$296,000 Total
This action will allow Public Works Traffic & Parking Services to
enter into an agreement with SNO and NRP to design and install low
level pedestrian street lighting along the previously described 13th
Ave NE corridor utilizing the available funds. This installation will
conform to the approved Minneapolis Street Light Policy.

Due to a schedule change, the members from the womens Olympic Hockey
team will not be able to attend the Skating Party at Logan.
I hope you are still able to stop by for an art project, hot chocolate
and maybe a little skating.
Thanks for your understanding.

Just to let everyone know, after replacing the original battery, we
took the car to Stinson Auto Repair as suggested here. Turns out the
alternator was working just fine, and we gave them another opening
asking them to check for anything else that might need fixing.
Despite all those openings, we learned the car was in great shape and
didn't need anything else.
Folks I've only had one other mechanic like that in a lifetime, the
other being back in Houston. They were great, and now I have a
mechanic. Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction.

If this "Issues Forum" is the public level, would you like to see a
complementary private online exchange among your nearby neighbors (say
just a couple blocks, the crowd from National Night Out, etc.)?
Answer here:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8WKCFRM
* What might you use it for?
* What features would you like to see? What ideas do you have?
* Imagine a "neighbors directory" limited to those nearest you in the
system (say 50 or 100 users based on your preference), what
information or links would you like to share or see? Again, this would
be behind a login and not in Google.
* What concerns do you have (what might cause you not to participate)?
* If you are a block leader (formal or informal), what needs do you
have that we might support within this tool?
You may also sign-up as a potential beta-tester.
Drop your quick feedback here:

On Saturday, we will have the second gathering of local software
developers interested in helping build an experimental online tool to
help us all connect with our nearest neighbors online. See:

The Audubon Neighborhood Association reports that construction is underway at the corner of Lowry and Polk, where MetroPlains is developing a three-story, 30-unit apartment building called Audubon Crossing. Here's from the neighborhood's website: "Several tired houses at the corner of Lowry Avenue and Polk Street have been torn down. Replacing those houses will be a 30-unit mixed-income apartment building named Audubon Crossing. ANA's Land Use Committee has been working on the investment in our neighborhood for several years. We were first approached by the developer, MetroPlains, with a concept for a four-story mixed-use building, with apartments above street-level commercial space. Majdi Wadi of Holy Land already owned the old houses, and it was his vision for redevelopment that got the project started. Securing financing for the project took over two years. In that span, economic and banking conditions soured, and the stakeholders decided to eliminate the retail component. This reduced the height of the building from four stories to three." http://audubonneighborhood.org/content/audubon-crossing-construction-underway Dan Haugen Waite Park
