I want to assure everyone that all are welcome to attend these important
meetings. The East African Community has done a great job of learning our
traditional manners at precinct caucuses over the years, but there is still
a lot of room for improvement.
These meetings take a lot of time to plan. Our reputation as a political
unit of the DFL has been damaged by some leaders and some followers who
have been violent and very disorderly. I had to make a clear and direct
comment about what is expected of the audience when they come to take place
in our democratic process.
Please do not feel frightened or offended by my earlier comments. Many
attendees do a great job as participants at our caucuses. However, over
the past several years, many people have been having conversations with
family members, friends, and neighbors during times when they should be
listening and quiet, and these conversation are heard over our presenters's
necessary speech.
Please think of your responsibility at our caucuses as similar to what is
expected of you when you attend your mosque services or church services.
There are times when it is o.k. to talk and wander around, but there are
definitely times when everyone must be seated, quiet and attentive.
I am still learning the best ways to work with our caucuses and political
community. So, please do not feel embarrassed or bad about past errors.
We must, now, move forward as a community, into our future with one
another, with the principles and ideals of our political party in mind.
Our leaders and elected officials must also behave and treat people with
respect, and not press people into aggressive or illegal behavior to
support their candidates.
I have lived in the Riverside Plaza Apartment Complex for nearly 25-years,
and have assisted neighbors with management issues during the early years,
and try to say Hello, Salaam, and As Salaam Alaykum, as one who believes in
Allah, as well as greeting people in Korean and Vietnamese and Spanish.
Each of you, including the youth who feel they have nothing to do with
their lives and are feeling like outsiders, are important to me. I only
speak fluent English, but I am supportive of people from all races and
religions.
With best wishes from someone who was once confused about what to do in
politics and in our political party, but who has learned through
involvement and experience
Sincerely,
Barry
