as a candidate for Lt. Governor on that ticket. Bobagain and I have been
friends since we met while participating in the OCCUPY movement in late 2011.
While we didn’t and still don’t agree on all of the issues we were and are both
interested in the right to freedom of speech. We were both having that freedom
challenged within the OCCUPY movement while that was going on. I was eventually
asked to leave OCCUPY Minneapolis, because of my beliefs, although I continued
to work with OCCUPY Homes until it dissolved in 2014.
Now, Bobagain’s right to freedom of speech is being challenged within the
Republican Party. One of his main issues is to ensure that Donald Trump is not
nominated by the Republican Party as its candidate for President of the United
States, and if he is nominated that he not win that contest. That is, of
course, not a message that most Republicans want to hear and many steps have
been taken to silence him.
One of the reasons I agreed to join that ticket is because I think defeating
Trump is one of the most important issues facing the country today. I think
Bobagain’s in a position, inside the Republican Party to bring maximum
attention to that issue in Minnesota, and perhaps beyond Minnesota as well.
I am an Independent, but I have supported Bernie Sanders in 2015. Bernie is
also an Independent, but he ran as a Democrat for President at that time. Like
Bernie, I am also a democratic socialist and I was for several decades a member
of the Democratic Socialists of America. I disassociated myself from that
organization when it began to strongly endorse issues such as raising the
minimum wage. I believe that raising the minimum wage creates more
unemployment, especially for the very poor and homeless people, who simply are
not employable at the higher wage. Along with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was
and am in support of a guaranteed income that will not create unemployment and
will raise wages for everyone.
The DSA has also bought into the Black Lives Matter narrative which regards the
police as unnecessary or nearly so. I regard the police as absolutely
essential, especially if we are to prevent crime, especially in poor
neighborhoods and in African and Native American neighborhoods. I see the
police as socialist security. The other alternative is for people who can
afford it to have their own private security. One can look at the Pinkerton
detective agency to see how that might work. During the struggle on the
Minneapolis City Council, many of the Council Members who wanted to defund and
dismantle the MPD hired private security for their protection, at the city's
expense.
I also disagree with the DSA, on their policy of endorsing Bolsheviks such as
members of Socialist Alternative. I regard Bolsheviks as no better than
National Socialists NAZIS. They are both in support of Totalitarianism.
I also support cooperative and collective business arrangements, both of which
I have worked in and helped manage. I even support the nationalization of some
businesses along the lines of the post office, libraries, and some hospitals.
But capitalist business arrangements should also be allowed. I have also worked
in and managed for-profit businesses. The government has no right to dictate
how the people arrange their economy beyond the necessary regulation to keep
things running smoothly, efficiently, and fairly. Capitalism, with all of its
drawbacks and shortcomings, (think global warming, and unequal distribution of
wealth) especially if unregulated, has lifted more people out of poverty than
any other economic system in the world. (Think China).
I regard the Democratic and Republican parties as quasi-governmental entities.
My loyalty, whichever party I am temporarily affiliated with is to the people
of Minnesota, the people of the United States, and then to the people of the
world. My loyalty to whichever party I happen to be affiliated with is
analogous to the loyalty I would have for the House of Representatives if I
were a Congressperson or the loyalty I would have to the Senate if I were a
Senator. Again, my loyalty would be to my state, the country, and, specifically
to the people, not to any government entity or political party.
Right now I think it is tactically more advantageous for me to work within the
Republican Party in order to further my goal and Bobagain’s goal, to defeat
Donald Trump. I also want to make it clear that I am also opposed to Joe Biden
and Camila Harris as President and Vice President. I think the far left Woke
agenda of the Democratic Party is equally dangerous to the country. If these
are the only choices I have to vote for in the major parties, I am likely to
support the Forward Party of Andrew Yang.
As I said above, Bobagain and I have many issues we agree on and many on which
we do not. I joined this ticket with the understanding that we each could have
our own views and each speak for ourselves and where we agree we can speak as
one. If I only get across one idea to you, I hope it is that whatever I write
in this forum is my idea. The only time I am speaking for Bobagain is when I
make it explicitly clear that I am speaking for both. Do not be surprised if we
contradict each other occasionally. We both intend to be honest about our
views. We think honesty is more important than winning elections. After having
competed in several elections, I at least, have come to the conclusion that
honesty and winning elections are incompatible with each other, so each
candidate has to choose which is most important. But hey, who knows, maybe I
will be suppressed this time, and we will win.
