I thought this group would be interested in the new grassroots philanthropy
and engagement site launching in Alexandria, Virginia next week. The project
is an initiative of Alexandria's community foundation (ACT for Alexandria)
and is funded in part by the Knight Foundation. The City of Alexandria is
also a partner. Unlike recent citizen philanthropy sites like Jumo, ACTion
Alexandria focuses on engaging people locally, and we don't take any tips.
For the last few months, I have been working closely with local government
and nonprofits to collect and prioritize community human service needs, and
now, we're going to start mobilizing citizens to address them. Our first
projects include raising money for one month of after school snacks for a
local homeless shelter and helping the Partnership for a Healthier
Alexandria prioritize a new set of Quality of Life indicators.
The site launches on Monday, February 7th. If you are a resident of the City
of Alexandria, or just curious, you can pre-register here:
http://www.actionalexandria.org/get-involved/
Key Features:
. Weekly featured actions to benefit local nonprofits
. City-wide challenges that call for citizen solutions to local
problems
. Action and event posting by nonprofit organizations and citizens
. Customizable profiles for nonprofit organizations and citizens
Featured Projects:
. Residents will be able to "Speak Up and Take ACTion," a citywide
effort to gather resident feedback about quality of life issues that matter
most. This "quality of life Indicators" project is sponsored by The
Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria, ACT for Alexandria, and Virginia
Tech.
. For its first Featured Action, ACTion Alexandria is working with
Carpenter's Shelter to fund one month of after school snacks for children
living at the local homeless shelter.
Thanks so much, and please let me know if I can answer any questions!
