Yes, Maureen! The City Shelter is always in need - never enough money, never enough time, never enough people. Citizens of Las Vegas, YOU can make the difference! Share your lunch hour with a Shelter dog - take half an hour and walk a dog during your lunch. The dog will be eternally grateful and I think you will return to work having gotten a little bit of sunshine, a little bit of exercise and a feeling of giving back. Next time your in the grocery store, pick up an extra bag of cat food or litter. When your cleaning out your linen closet set aside those old towels and sheets. These few simple things can make a difference in the life of a cat or dog who may have never known the kindness of a human hand, will always remember hunger gnawing at their gut, or is lost, scared, and alone. Make a difference!

Thank you Las Vegas! Through donation boxes located at business' throughout town, in one month, The Sweetie Pie Initiative has raised enough money to spay or neuter one dog. That means every time you dropped your spare change, or maybe even a dollar, into a Sweetie Pie donation box you helped ease and extend the life of a dog! Maybe next month we can raise enough for a dog and a cat! Look for Sweetie Pie donation boxes around town and give generously. Please contact me if you would like to host a Sweetie Pie donation box in your place of business. Thanks again!

Thanks for making The Sweetie Pie Initiative Garage-A-Rama a huge success! From donations and set-up help to all the bargain hunters who came through on Saturday, it would not be possible to bring the Santa Fe Animal Shelter's Mobile Clinic to Las Vegas without your support. Approximately 75 dogs and cats received spay/neuter services this weekend greatly reducing the number of unwanted puppies and kittens. Thanks so much!
Sweetie Pie Initiative is hosting a frightfully fabulous Halloween Carnival. The event will take place on Saturday, October 31 from 1p.m. - 4p.m. The event is primarily for children ages 10 and under, with plenty to do to keep you busy and nothing to scare you away! We will have spooktacular carnival games, bootiful photos and crafts, wickedly wonderful prizes, and fiendishly delicious snacks. Please join us at the Vital Arts Building, 423 Grand Ave. on Saturday from 1-4. We are also seeking VOLUNTEERS who LOVE animals to attend the event. Please contact Nicole at 454-0711. Thank you!

The Las Vegas Animal Shelter has been participating in adoption events at the Cottonwood Mall in Rio Rancho, receiving a great reception and many positive results. The adoptions occur every Saturday with a big holiday adoption push occurring December 18, 19, and 20. Thus far, these weekly events, including animal transfer and dog handling throughout the day, have been undertaken by Maureen O'Brien and Lisa Joseph. These two women are dedicated but the wear and tear on them, as well as, on their vehicles, in addition to the personal expense, is daunting. Volunteers are desperately needed to continue these weekly adoption events! Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Solstice, or simply honor the spirit of giving, share a Saturday with some shelter animals. Help them find a fur-ever home this holiday season. Please contact Maureen to commit to a Saturday. Your help is desperately needed but if you can't give your time, a generous donation will also help. If anyone is able to donate a well-running van or other large-size enclosed vehicle a true holiday blessing would occur. Thanks so much for making the difference in the life of an animal who deserves a chance. Please contact Maureen O’Brien at 505-426-8203.

Animal Adopt-A-Thon NIneteen dogs were taken to an adoption event in Rio Rancho, the weekend of December 18, 19, and 20th. Sixteen lucky dogs found homes and were able to avoid euthanasia by the hard work and determination of a handful of volunteers. Preparation for this event required immense community effort. Volunteers temperament-tested each dog. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter provided spay/neuter services and vaccinations for each dog. Eva Paloheimo, coordinator for the Santa Animal Shelter Mobile Clinic, loaned her van for transport. Leslie Moniot of the Canine Canyon Ranch, a large dog rescue located just outside of Las Vegas, provided foster care for some of the dogs. Terry Carlin, Martha Price, and Auritha Roybal were all essential in the preparation of paperwork, packing, and all the details encompassed in making this event successful. Maureen O'Brien, Lisa Joseph, Marti Nash, and Marcos Espinoza spent three long days in Albuquerque working from dusk 'til dawn. The generosity did not end there. The Las Vegas Animal Shelter was the lucky recipient of thirty bags of dog and cat food generously donated by the people of Albuquerque. The entire event was a true example of humanity at its finest. A fur-ever home for the holidays is the greatest gift of all!

Hello! I wanted to let you all know how our mobile spay/neuter transport program for San Miguel County is doing. Instead of bringing the mobile spay/neuter van to various San Miguel County locations in the winter months, we have begun transporting anywhere from 20 to 25 animals at a time into Santa Fe for spay/neuter surgeries. We are using the Santa Fe Animal Shelter Satellite Clinic on Wednesdays and the Santa Fe Animal Shelter Clinic on weekends since they are not open for public and shelter surgeries on those days. We did 3 transports in December and so far have done 5 in January and have done approximately 160 surgeries. Most of this program is being funded by a $15,000 DJ&T grant for canine surgeries and an additional $5,000 DJ&T grant to help cover the cost of transporting. Cat owners are being asked to pay a $35 fee per cat, which includes shots. All dog surgeries are free. Owners pay only for shots. In addition we ask everyone if they can pay an extra $10 to help cover our costs. However, this fee is not mandatory. The reason I'm writing this is to see if I can raise additional funding to help keep this program going. The DJ&T grant breaks down as follows: $4,500 to cover surgeries for dogs under 40 pounds and $10,500 to cover dogs over 40 pounds. I have just used up the small dog portion of this grant and finding larger dogs is always more difficult. We have currently paid for 60 small dog surgeries and 47 large dog surgeries. What I am proposing is to find additional funds we can use to help cover the cost of small dog surgeries. I would like to be able to tell owners that we could cover 50% of the surgery cost ($65-$75 for males and $80-$90 for females) if they could pay the other 50%. The owner would still need to pay for any shots. As long as I'm not using DJ&T monies I can also help with animals in Mora and Santa Fe Counties. What I'm finding, for the most part, are pet owners who really want to do the right thing by their pets, but simply don't have the resources available. And these are exactly the pet owners I want to help. And since they are not pet owners already going to our local vets, we are not taking business away from them. Something we have no desire to do! We have flyers all over the county, have been on the radio and in the newspapers and my plan now is to go personally to some of the neighborhoods in Las Vegas that have serious pet over population and see how we can help get animals sterilized. But I am running out of financial resources. If anyone reading this is interested in donating towards this cause or knows someone who is, here is a list of the various organizations you can donate to. 1.) Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society 100 Caja del Rio Road, SF, NM 87507 2.) Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC) P.O. Box 524 Las Vegas, NM 87701 3.) Bernal Community Center Attention: Animal Services Assistance Program (ASAP) P.O. Box 113 Serafina, NM 87701 Each of these organizations has 501(c)3 status so donations are tax deductible. Please mention that the money is to be used for the SFAS mobile spay/neuter transport program. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions. Thank you so much! Eva Paloheimo Mobile Spay/Neuter Coordinator (505) 470-8765
Please help us spread the word!! Tell your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers! Tell the people you see in the grocery store! The Issues Forum really does work! Thanks for getting the word out and finding these guys a home! Remember these guys? These triplet brothers were dumped last week on a cold, snowy night. They spent the weekend in foster care being lavished in love by two boys and their mom who always makes room for one more. After many good meals, a bath or two, and lots of cuddles, these three boys have found their FURever home. They will be staying together in household with three girls to call their own. Fostering can make the difference in the life of a lost or abandoned animal. Think about opening your heart and your home to help an animal until they can find a home to call their own

Eva Paloheimo, coordinator of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter Mobile Clinic, has just released some impressive numbers. The spay/neuter transport program, running from December 6, 2009, has provided low-cost spay/neuter services to 310 animals in 14 days! This success would not be possible without a small group of hard-working, organized, dedicated individuals and donations. This program has helped eliminate thousands of future un-wanted puppies and kittens. If you, or someone you know, would like to HELP KEEP THIS PROGRAM RUNNING, please make a tax-deductible donation to the Animal Welfare Coalition or the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, designated for the Mobile Clinic.

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter Mobile Clinic will be offering vaccinations and microchipping for dogs and cats from noon to 4:00 p.m., Friday, April 9, at 423 Grand Avenue. Rabies and parvo/distemper vaccinations will be available for dogs. Rabies and feline distemper vaccinations will be available for cats. The cost of each vaccination is $10. Deworming and flea/tick preventative medications will also be available. Avid microchipping will be offered at a discounted cost of $20. Microchipping involves a tiny microchip (the size of a grain of rice) which is painlessly injected under the pet’s skin. Pet owners register their animal’s identifying information with Avid. The microchip contains a personal, unique information number. Animal shelters and veterinarians have scanners that check for the number to reunite lost dogs and cats with their owners. Shelters are already overcrowded and lost pets can be kept for only a short period of time. More pets die because owners didn’t identify them than all infectious diseases combined. Microchipping is a safeguard to guarantee pet owners are reunited with their beloved pets. In the case of a stolen pet, microchipping ensures positive identification. Shot clinics will also be offered April 30; June 4; July 9; August 6; and September 10. For more information, contact Eva Paloheimo at 505-470-8765.
The winter 2009 – 2010 Spay/Neuter Transport Program has just completed its last transport. 232 dogs and 156 cats underwent surgery from Las Vegas, Wagon Mound, Pecos, Mora, Anton Chico, Bernal, San Juan/San Jose, Rowe, and the Highway 3 corridor. Eva Paloheimo and her staff at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, as well as, local volunteers, Sara White, Rose White, Marcos Espinoza, and Martina Holguin worked together to make these crucial surgeries possible. Way to go Team Paloheimo!

FIV is currently affecting stray and feral cats in Las Vegas. Please take appropriate precautions in protecting your pet cat from this devastating disease. Eva Paloheimo and her team worked hard all winter with the spay/neuter transport program to keep new litters at bay. We don't want to lose momentum this summer so we are piecing funds together to hold spay/neuter clinics in Las Vegas. We REALLY need help on May 22 and 23 to make the spay/neuter clinic a success! Please e-mail me to let me know when you are available to help. In addition, if you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to support spay/neuter services in Las Vegas and San Miguel County, just let me know. Thanks so much!

Foster or FURever home for a special cat: A lovely black and white female cat has recently found herself on the streets of Las Vegas. A few weeks ago, she had a lustrous coat and healthy appearance, clearly a housecat. She tried to integrate into a feral colony but didn’t do well. She has since made several desperate attempts to reach safety within the house of the gentleman who has been trying to care for. Unfortunately, his own cats did not appreciate this interloper. She is rapidly losing weight and her healthy appearance and seems to be extremely stressed at this new life on the streets. If you, or anyone you know, would be able to provide a temporary or forever home to this cat in need, please contact me at 305-479-3618. Thanks so much!

Team UnChain New Mexico with Dogs Deserve Better and Babes and Bullies are hosting a New Mexico Chain Off at University of New Mexico campus on the NE corner at University and Central. The event will be held Saturday, July 3, 2010 from 9 AM - 8 PM. Chain Off has been held annually around the 4th of July since 2004, highlighting the reality that while Americans are celebrating their own freedom, there are tens of thousands of Man's Best Friends in every state who are still not free: America's chained and penned dogs. These dogs are found in backyards stretching from Delaware to Alaska, from Maine to Hawaii, throughout the provinces of Canada, and in countries around the world. Chain Off has evolved from one woman chaining herself to a doghouse in 2004 for 33 hours, to over 100 people chaining themselves in over 52 locations including Canada and Romania during last year's 2009 Chain Off to raise awareness for chained dogs. This year help us blow last year's total out of the water by chaining yourself in your own backyard, your neighborhood, a local park, or with us in Florida and New Mexico! Join up 'in packs' to make a local event of it, or take it low-key in a one-woman or one-man show in your own backyard. However it works for you, it's ok by us! We've got more excitement than ever, with a large events in Florida and New Mexico where activists will be chained, and new ways to fundraise in groups or on your own. We'd like to see over 150 people, and at least one from EVERY SINGLE STATE, living chained to doghouses sometime during the weeks from June 26th through July 4th. We can do it! You can do it!
Some advice from the Humane Society to protect your pet on the Fourth of July: Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays. Do not leave your pet in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects—even death—in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen. Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you've removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company while you're attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations. If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays. Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death. Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners. If you plan to go away for the holiday weekend, read our information on
Join us on Saturday July 3 at the University of New Mexico Campus, NE corner on University and Central from 9am to 8pm as we participate in the 2010 Chain Off event. For those of you not familiar with Chain Off, this event has been held annually around the 4th of July since 2004, highlighting the reality that while Americans are celebrating their own freedom, there are tens of thousands of Man's Best Friends in every state who are still not free: America's chained and penned dogs. In addition to being our biggest awareness campaign of the year, this is also our biggest fundraising event of the year, last year raising almost $33,000 for our work with chained and penned dogs. $33,000? Let's blow that out of the water this year too, with a goal of $60,000 during Chain Off 2010! For more information about the Chain Off event in New Mexico, contact Amanda Green at <email obscured>

Ms. Moody, in addition to MANY other entrants, helped make our fundraising raffle a huge success. The money raised will go to providing low-cost spay/neuter services and other animal rescue work. We work hard to help animals lead long, healthy lives, in compliance with local regulations, free of suffering and neglect. This would not be possible without your help! My name is Penelope I’m looking for a new home. I am a very happy and social dog. I love being around people and I want to know everyone. I am a good companion. Even though I’m older now, I still run and play and box with things on the ground, like soccer players do. The veterinarian looking at me the other day thought I was maybe 6 and I am probably 10! He answered because of my energy, I think. I have lived with my current person for about 7 years when she rescued me after I had been hit by a vehicle. We both know it is time for me to find a new home. She can tell you the details. I am a house dog, used to a dog door with in and out privileges and a fenced yard. I travel well in cars. I probably ought to be an only dog unless there is a dog I really like and I get to be the boss. I don’t like cats at all. I like sleeping on the bed with my person and often curl up at the foot of the bed. I have all shots and some arthritis, but you have to look close to see it. If you think we could work and play well together, call Carole and let’s see.

I have waged a ceaseless campaign urging the community to participate in animal rescue, health, and safety and am pleased to report, I have seen the volunteers and the dollars come trickling in, oftentimes, as a result of the Issues Forum. I would like to extend an enormous thank you to the community of Las Vegas for showing they care about the lives of dogs and cats. Over the last few months, I have been pleased to see many new faces volunteering at low-cost spay/neuter/shot clinics. Spaying and neutering your own pets, and sometimes, even the neighborhood strays, is the key to ending pet overpopulation and the abuse and neglect seen in so many dogs and cats that must live their lives on the streets. This is only one of many ways to help. Fostering, providing transport, and many other areas are ways in which you can help make a difference in the life of a cat or dog in need. On Friday, August 6th, Betty Fields, June Price, Georgia Wilson, Michelle White, Rose White, Sadie Madrid, Leland Howard, Susan West, Marcos Espinoza, Carmen Holguin, and Martina Holguin helped make the low-cost spay/neuter/ shot clinic a huge success. Over thirty surgeries were done, countless vaccinations, and many wellness consults. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter provides a priceless service to Las Vegas and San Miguel County by allowing us access to their mobile spay/neuter van. The staff of the mobile clinic, Eva Paloheimo, Dr. Tom Parker, Myria Bretta, Mychelle Moody, and Sara White are an amazing team bringing priceless services to our area. Thank you Las Vegas for your efforts in helping dogs and cats in need get the services they so richly deserve!

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter Mobile Clinic provides low-cost services in and around Las Vegas. In addition, shelter and community animals are able to receive the vetting necessary for attendance at adoption events. Animals that are spayed/neutered and up-to-date with shots are much more adoptable, less likely to bounce back, and most importantly, not going to create un-wanted litters. Thank you Eva Paloheimo, Dr. Tom Parker, Mychelle Moody, Myria Bretta, and Sara White, staff of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter Mobile Clinic. These clinics could not happen without dedicated volunteers: Thank you Marcos Espinoza, Betty Fields, Michelle White, Rose White, Kait Sabo, Leland Howard, June Price, Mary Coal, Jo Rita Jordan, Marti Nash, Corie Conwell, Nicole Dahlquist, Judy Land, and the United World College Animal Welfare Organization. Local adoptions and adoption events provide much-needed homes but rescue organizations across New Mexico and the Southwest regularly open their doors to Las Vegas dogs. This week alone, Las Vegas dogs have been taken in by Pet-A-Bulls Pit Rescue, All Ears Basset Hound Rescue, Four Corners All Breed Rescue, Luvin' Labs, Colorado Puppy Rescue, and Lifeline Puppy Rescue. Watermelon Mountain Ranch hosted this weekend's huge adoption event in which six Las Vegas dogs found their FURever homes. It's important to remember, not all homeless dogs and cats are in the City of Las Vegas Animal Shelter. Many generous individuals open their hearts and their homes to foster dogs and cats in need. The loving, secure, stable environment provided by a foster home results in dogs and cats that are well-adjusted and socialized, ready to form a life-long bond with their adoptive family. For those animals in the City of Las Vegas Animal Shelter, transports and adoptions would not occur without the support and assistance of Kelly Eversole and Carl Vigil. In addition, Pat Steele, Ken and Jayne Johnson, Ed and James Sandoval, Carole Jackson, Lisa Joseph, Maureen O'Brien, Martha Price, Anthony Sena, Angela Stell, Diana Whitten, and Sharon Stone have each made a difference in the life of a Las Vegas dog or cat in the last week. To the countless, nameless individuals who go out of their way to ease the suffering of some animal, thank you. In attempting to thank everyone, I have most certainly, inadvertently forgotten some significant group or individual. I am so sorry for this omission. Thank you.
A foster home for five little kittens is desperately needed!!! Please open your home and heart to these tiny lives!
Five kittens are in desperate need of a foster home! They are only able to stay where they are currently located until Tuesday, September 28. For anyone considering fostering this young family, please know that you will have a great deal of support - you won't have to do this on your own! Also, we have multiple venues for publicizing these little orphaned kittens and getting them into FURever homes. PLEASE CONSIDER FOSTERING!!!!
Whiskers is an amazing young lady currently at the City of Las Vegas Animal Shelter in kennel #25. Whiskers is approximately 6-9 months old, spayed and up-to-date on her shots. These factual details mean nothing compared to the splendor that is Whisker's personality. Whiskers is a loving, playful, affectionate girl. Although, Whiskers has spent the last month in the Shelter, her spirit has not been broken. She LOVES playing with other dogs and would love to find a home with her buddy, Rains. Whiskers and Rains spent the day together at an adoption event and couldn't get enough of each other. The two played, rolled, frolicked and sat side by side, like life-long friends. We know this may be too much to ask but Whiskers would certainly enjoy a home with a canine companion. Whiskers would also enjoy some kids of her very own. She certainly enjoyed playing with them today! In Whiskers, you get the complete package! A dog with the energy and spunk to play games and run by your side, as well as, the affection and love to smother every member of your family with kisses. Please consider adding Whiskers to your family. She is ready to leave the Shelter and go to a home of her very own.

Rains is a very special Aussie Mix currently located at the City of Las Vegas Animal Shelter in kennel #7. Rains is neutered and up-to-date on shots. This loveable guy is more than facts and numbers! Rains has been at the Shelter for approximately a month and desperately needs to find his FURever home. Rains is loving and playful, good with other dogs and children. Rains recently spent the day frolicking with a buddy from the Shelter, Whiskers. These two had SUCH a great time together they would love to stay together forever but they understand if this isn't possible. Although Rains would enjoy having a canine companion around, I think, he would do well as an only dog as well. Rains is approximately one year old: young enough for the energy to play and old enough to focus his energy. Rains would be a great addition to any household. Come in to the Shelter and meet Rains - to know him is to love him.

Congratulations on making another spay/neuter/shot clinic, an absolute success!!!!! These clinics could not happen without the help of each one of you but this week especially, each of you really came through. Dr. Parker, Eva Paloheimo, Myria Bretta, Mychele Moody, and Sara White thanks for sharing your much-needed, specialized skills with Las Vegas! Betty Fields, Marcos Espinoza, Michelle White, Rose White, Kait Sabo, June Price, Karen Topping, and Nicole Dahlquist thanks for all you do!!!
Many thanks to everyone who helped make this weekend's yard sale fundraiser a HUGE success!!!! The Nat Gold Players and the Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic will have a little extra to fill their coffers as a result of all the hard work it takes to have a successful fundraiser. This event was sponsored by Complexions Skincare, owned and operated by Valerie Hayden. Ms. Hayden has spearheaded this project, taking a desire to dance the night away while giving back to the community, and made it a successful fundraiser. Lisa Joseph, Mel Yoho, Colleen Yoho, Zelda McCrossen, Bonnie Grace, and Marti Nash all pitched in to help make Ms. Hayden's dream a reality. This weekend's yard sale fundraiser raised the start-up money to fund an up-coming, larger fundraiser. Keep your eyes open for a chance to mobilize the power of music and movement brought to you by DJ Chrystalline (http://www.ladydjs.com/chrystalline.html). This event will bring everyone together to feel the beat and raise money for the Nat Gold Players and the Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic. According to DJ Chrystalline, "when everyone is feeling the same beat and there is that sense of community, for that moment you aren’t focusing on what divides you, there is a common connection that is so powerful.” Date, time, and location to come!!! Thanks, again!

hello all, we have a rescue dog named zoe that needs a forever home. she is about 1 1/2 years old, about 35-40lbs and we think she is a coyote/heeler mix. she is the smartest dog we've ever known and incredibly cute, sweet and cuddly. we have a new baby and sadly, not enough time to devote to a training routine for zoe. you will love this sweet dog. she prefers women and we think she had a lot of bad experiences with men. the less masculine the male, the better she is with them. she is very shy, but once she gets to know you, she becomes a little lover. she does well off leash and will stay close to you. she is also the fastest runner we've ever seen. we think she'd be an amazing agility dog, as she can leap like a gazelle. she can jump a fence, however, so you would need to have an adobe wall or pretty high other type of fence. she will make a playmate of even the grumpiest dog, as she is always happy and chipper. she is great with kids and babies. she is very concerned if our baby cries. we really want her to be with someone who will be very kind to her, as she had a hard-luck life in her previous life. let us know if you'd like to meet her. there is a photo of her in the groups photos, in the album titled zoe.

Greetings Animal Lovers, We have an unusual need one of you may be able to help with. A couple in our community has taken the time to work with a stray dog and would like to bring her into their home and adopt her. This dog, Sam, still needs a bit of work and socialization before she is completely ready to adapt to life in a home. Do any of you have a dog-friendly backyard area where a kennel could be set up? Of course, all of the daily care would be provided for. The couple are apartment dwellers with no area to set-up a kennel but they are committed to providing Sam a loving home. Can anyone help? Thank you!

Greetings Animal Lovers! Please see the attached flier for Houdi, who is greatly missed by her human and cat companions. Houdi has been missing for over a month. She has likely been found by someone who thinks she is a great dog and kept Houdi for themself. In addition, Lydia Gonzales, located on 8th Street, has lost a male, 9 week-old, Chow mix. Lydia's puppy has been missing approximately one week and was last seen wearing a blue collar. Lydia can be contacted at 425-9581 or 429-0582. If you know anyone who has recently adopted a "FOUND" dog or cat, please encourage them to check the animal shelter and local vets for a human who is desperately searching for a lost, beloved family member. Also, encourage others to help reunite precious pets with their human families, not because of needed medications or reward money, but because a vital bond has been broken and both animal and human alike, are grieving for lost family. Thanks for helping families re-unite for the holiday season!

We're working on building a foster care network for dogs and cats in San Miguel County. We're not having a lot of luck finding volunteers, so we're hoping to get some feedback from everyone to find out what barriers may be keeping people from volunteering. Could you please: 1) let us know what would stop you from fostering a dog or cat, and 2) pass this note on to as many people as possible, so we get as much feedback on this issue as we can. Thanks for your help!

We send jokes to bring a smile to a friend's face. We forward health messages to save a life. Political agendas spread to gain support. THIS e-mail gives a voice to the voiceless. THIS e-mail can save a life. THIS e-mail is one small, simple way to make a difference. Those of us involved in animal rescue have already inundated all of our friends, our co-workers and colleagues, family, and random strangers with requests for foster homes, transport assistance, donations, volunteer hours, and adoptions. We MUST get our message to a broader audience to make a difference. We are DESPERATELY looking for foster homes and adoptive families for amazing dogs and cats in Las Vegas and Albuquerque, New Mexico. When you open your home and your heart to an animal in need, the joy and love you receive is unconditional, boundless, and pure. Whatever your preferences are, we have the cat or dog for YOU. We have kittens and puppies; we have big dogs and small dogs, we have shy dogs; we have perky dogs; we have cats with long hair and cats with short hair; we have purebreeds and we have mixed breeds - you're perfect match is only a phone call away! If you can't open your home, consider opening your wallet. Even a few dollars can make a difference to these small fuzzy lives. Your money can go to provide food and shelter to starving and chained dogs, vet care for those in foster homes, or support spay/neuter programs to keep the number of unwanted litters down. With a little help from everyone, a large difference is made. If you're in New Mexico, please consider donating to newmexicodogsdeservebetter.org or animalwelfarenewmexico.org, or your local Humane Society chapter. If you're like us, your contact list is not limited to your own geographical area. We have friends in California and Mumbai. We have family in Boston and Puerto Rico. We do business in London and Iowa. This request is not limited by region. This request is applicable across the country and across the world. PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO YOUR ENTIRE CONTACT LIST. If you can't help us, we are HAPPY to help you find a shelter or rescue in your area that needs the same kind of support. We NEED this message to spread exponentially. We NEED this message to go viral. We NEED this message to make the difference. PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO YOUR ENTIRE CONTACT LIST. For the past 5 years, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter's mobile spay/neuter van has parked at the Vital Arts building (formerly known as Voda's Auto Parts) at 423 Grand Ave. This is where all low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination clinics have been held for Las Vegas and the surrounding communities and has been provided at no cost. However, the property has been sold and will no longer be available for these services. This means our last clinic in Las Vegas will be held on January 27, 28, 29, 30, unless a new space is found before our next scheduled clinic in February on the 25th, 26th and 27th. The momentum we have built with monthly scheduled visits to Las Vegas could be lost, resulting in an increase of unwanted litters and disease, easily prevented by spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations. We are looking for a new location in which to house these much needed clinics and are reaching out to the community for help in finding the perfect new location. Ideally, we need a large room with access to a bathroom along with heat and running water. A safe place for pet owners to park is also needed. Our needs are actually quite simple. We are hoping to find a donated space we can use on a monthly basis, funding permitted, at least through 2011. Your help in this matter will allow us to continue providing these much needed services to the community. We can't do it without YOUR help. For more information, please contact 305-479-3618.
Please, Please, Please consider fostering some puppies. I currently have 21 puppies in desperate need of somewhere to go. You won't be taking all of them! If you could take two, the puppies could be shared across several homes. The majority of the puppies just need a foster home for a week. Please, consider fostering a puppy! It would make a world of difference and you won't regret it! Please contact me as soon as possible. The need is urgent!! Thank you!

Looking for the boarding station for the Kitty Freedom Train - Can you help? We have a great opportunity to transfer some of Las Vegas' excess feline population north for adoption fairs. However, we need to be able to get them all current on their shots before they make the move. We're looking for a warm indoor place we could keep 15-20 cats or kittens in for up to a week at a time while we get them ready. Do you have any place that might work, or know of anyone who could help us? Please contact Corie at 505-264-3830. Thanks!

Wow! The last four days have been an amazing display of endurance, generosity, and compassion! Over a dozen dogs and one cat from the City of Las Vegas Animal Shelter were fully vetted in preparation for adoption. Dozens of owned animals received low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination services. One tiny homeless Chihuahua was generously sponsored by a private donor and went into an amazing foster home - all in one day! Three homeless cats were rescued and are being prepared for transport to Colorado cat rescue. Most importantly, the education and outreach to the community as a result of one of these clinics is priceless. These kind of wins are only possible as a result of countless hours by skilled professionals and volunteers. Betty White, Corie Weaver, Sean Weaver, Sara Schmalfeldt, JP Pauillac, Auritha Roybal, Kayla Crespin, Mary Cole, June Price, Tara Alexander, Bryson Alexander, Shawntel Tenorio, Denise Fox, Ryan Hayes, Rose White, Rudi Stampfli, Pat Steele, Elizabeth Tisdel, Kait Sabo, Kristy Klaiber, Denward Wilson, and Linzy Behrs worked countless hours to make the last four days run smoothly. Dr. Freeman and veterinary technicians, Mychele Moody, Myria Bretta, and Sara Whiteprovided top notch care to every patient, despite several unexpectedly complicated surgeries. They were not fazed and faced the challenge undaunted. Keeping everything running smoothly, was Eva Paloheimo. The staff of the City of Las Vegas Animal Shelter, Kelly Eversole and Carl Vigil, also played a key role preparing the Shelter animals. It really is impossible to quantify all that was achieved and acknowledge all the people who made it possible in big and small ways. Each day, we are making strides in improving animal welfare and awareness in our community. Let's work together and make a difference! Thank you!
Dear Volunteer Crew, At the last clinic, 113 animals were altered in Las Vegas, ending possibly thousands of unwanted puppies or kittens – and it's all thanks to you! In order to make sure we've got every hour covered as efficiently as possible, we're asking folks to sign up early for the next spay/neuter clinic. >From 6:30 AM to about 10:00 AM, it is SUPER busy! People are scheduled to arrive at 7:00 AM, at which time, they will be filling out paperwork, reviewing paperwork with Eva, making payment, and getting their pets ID’ed and placed in crates. This time period can get a little crazy! Shortly after everyone has arrived, dogs will start being loaded onto the van. There will be a lull in the morning until approximately 11:00 AM or 11:30 AM when the first batch of dogs is taken off the van and the next set is ready to load. This routine will be repeated with the cats until everyone is done. The early afternoon can either be quite calm or have mini rushes depending on how many people show-up for shots. There will certainly be times when there might not be much to do but that can quickly change. Please don’t be disappointed if you hit a lull. At about 2:00 PM, owners will start coming to pick up their pets and this will continue on until about 4:00 or 5:00 PM. The next clinic is February 25, 26, 27. We've broken the day into three shifts. Please, please, please consider signing up early for a shift on at least one day. If everyone takes a shift or two, then it's easier all around! 6:30-9:30 (3 hours) 9:30-1:30 (4 hours) 1:30-4:30 (3 hours) The earlier and later shifts are shorter because they tend to be crazier, checking animals in and out. We have jobs for anyone – holding dogs, petting cats, helping owners with paperwork, cleaning instruments, folding laundrey, you name it! Can't work in the clinic on any of those days? We've got two other ways you can help! We really need to have someone scheduled for laundry for Friday night and Saturday night. Also, we need someone to take care of lunch on each day. It's not important if you cook, get take out pizza, or talk one of the local restaurants into helping out – but we've got to feed our crew! Please email me as soon as you can to let me know which shift on which day you'd be able to work, or if there's another way you'd like to help us out. And finally – as you all know – we need more help! Please, forward this email to anyone you know that might be interested and able in helping – with everyone's assistance, we can make a difference! Thanks, again! Tina

A Las Vegas area dog has recently tested positive for heartworm disease. Mosquitos transmit heartworms so it is easy to neglect giving your dog preventative during the cold winter months. This is a mistake! It takes six months from the time your dog is bitten by an infected mosquito for adult heartworms to be present. Treatment for heartworm disease is expensive, hard on the dog, and a long process. Heartworm disease is EASILY preventable! Please maintain a year-round heartworm preventative regimen for your dog's continued health!

There will be a Spay/Neuter/Shot Clinic this weekend located at 423 Grand Avenue. In addition to previously scheduled spay/neuter appointments, the public is encouraged to come in starting at 12:00 for shots, microchipping, and deworming. We’ve all seen the posters and ads for missing pets and felt our own hearts tighten at the thought of our own beloved pets going missing. Don't let your pet find themselves lost, scared, and alone. Microchipping for only $16 is available. A tiny computer chip is injected beneath your pet's skin and provides a permanent, positive identification which cannot be lost, altered or removed - a safe, simple, and inexpensive way to protect your pet against loss or theft. Volunteers are still needed for FRIDAY AFTERNOON and MOST OF THE DAY SUNDAY (except early AM). Please email as soon as you can to let me know which shift, on which day you’re be able to work, or if there's another way you'd like to help us out. And finally – as you all know – we need more help! Please, forward this email to anyone you know that might be interested in helping – with everyone's assistance, we can make a difference! Shiloh and Gwyneth are a male and a female, approximately eight-week old pups in great need of socialization. Ideally, each pup would go to a separate home and learn how to love and be loved. These two just need some quality, bonding time to learn that people are no longer going to be a source of fear or pain. Please consider taking one of these pups into your home and LOVING them back to health! Please e-mail or call 305-479-3618 to meet these two shy pups
Shiloh and Gwyneth REALLY NEED your time and love. These pups are suffering the effects of being societies cast-offs. They need to be taught that people are no longer going to be a source of pain. These puppies don't need to be bottle-fed; they don't need round the clock care; they just need your time and affection. It is a beautiful thing to prepare a puppy to go on to their FURever home. If not, why not schedule a playdate?!?!?!?!? If you have a couple of hours throughout the week, contact me and you can spend some quality time with Shiloh or Gwyneth. They will benefit greatly and you are sure to leave with a smile on your face. Call me!! 305-479-3618

______________ in strong support of Senate Bill 348. New Mexicans value basic human decency and cannot ignore horrible animal cruelty cases. Please do everything you can to help protect animals and pass SB 348. The link between animal cruelty and family violence is recognized and we should not ignore violent acts that happen to any being in our community.” Senator Sanchez is from Belen, and people in his district should call and ask him to support SB 348 because what happens to animals says a lot about our community and these voiceless victims deserve protection under the law. Senator Sanchez: 505-986-4727 If you know people who are constituents of Senator Payne, please ask them to call him and sincerely thank him for his leadership on Senate Bill 348 and ask for his help in getting the bill through the rest of the process: 505-986-4703 People can find contact info here for their state Senator and also look them up with a zip-plus-four: http://www.nmlegis.gov/lcs/legislatorsearch.aspx Here's a link to Peggy's interview on KRQE on the topic from this weekend. http://newmexico.onpolitix.com/news/39397/bill-to-strengthen-animal-cruelty-law Senate Bill (SB) 348, important amendments to New Mexico’s animal cruelty statute, suffered an initial setback when it was tabled last week in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The 6-5 vote to table the bill came after opposition from a few audience members who did not represent any organization and who disagreed with stronger animal cruelty laws in general. On the other hand, stronger animal protection laws are being supported by a broad spectrum of New Mexicans, law enforcement officials, domestic violence prevention advocates and others who have grown weary of seeing some egregious crimes against animals not taken seriously. Committee members expressed more than once that they wanted strong protections for animals in New Mexico, but they couldn’t support the exact language of SB 348. One committee member, Senator William Payne (R-Albuquerque), took that commitment to the next level and had a new committee bill drafted to address his concerns just in the last few days. His committee substitute bill was introduced Saturday night and passed the Senate Judiciary Committee 7-0. The bill next has to be heard and debated by the full Senate, and everyone who cares about strong laws to protect animals should immediately contact their state Senator to urge them to support the new bill that still makes hurting animals a serious crime.

Astrid, Ariel, and Amadeus need a temporary foster home to spend some time. These three pups were abandoned last night. They were taken in by a good samaritan and brought to the clinic today. Can you offer them a warm, safe pillow to lay their head?

Despite the fact this was our first low-cost spay/neuter/shot clinic in a new location; and despite the fact we faced several challenges on every day of the clinic, the staff of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter Mobile Clinic and the many dedicated volunteers were able to host an amazingly successful clinic! This weekend, at the West Las Vegas Middle School gym, over 90 spay/neuter surgeries were performed; dozens of vaccinations were administered; and for a variety of concerns, Las Vegas area dogs and cats received health checks. Animal lovers, West Las Vegas coach Morgan Montano and his wife, Vanessa, were able to secure this location to host the clinics and helped make sure things ran smoothly the entire weekend. We look forward to our May clinic at the West Las Vegas Middle School gym! See you then! To schedule a spay/neuter appointment, call 505-983-4309 x129. For volunteer opportunities and other questions, please call 305-479-3618
Meet Missy! She is approximately two years old, spayed, and current on vaccinations. Missy was on her own in Mora County with her young litter when two kind humans took her and her puppies in. Her puppies have now moved to Colorado to find their own FURever homes but Missy needs a place to call her own as well. Since she has been on her own, she likes to wander so definitely needs a securely fenced area. Missy likes to run and play and share lots of hugs and kisses. She gets along with other dogs and would love a playmate. If you would like to share your home with Missy, temporarily or indefinitely, please don't hesitate to contact me to arrange a meet and greet! Thanks!

Whether you live in Bernalillo or Belen, Albuquerque or Abiquiu, the proposed
amendments to the Bernalillo Animal Care Ordinance have the potential to impact
every county across the state. Let Bernalillo lawmakers KNOW you fiercely
support these highly improved ordinances and EXPECT Bernalillo to be a state
leader in enforceable humane care standards. Call, e-mail, share, forward,
tweet, and shout about your support of the new and improved Animal Amendments.
A Much Better Life for Animals – If YOU Help Now
Dear Friends of the Animals,
Major changes are about to happen for the animals of Bernalillo County and
beyond. YOU can help pass highly improved and more enforceable humane care
standards right away! The new Animal Amendment to the Animal Care Ordinance is
ready to be voted on next week!
Please save this date: Tues, April 12th, 5 pm (5:30pm is ok) –to attend the
County Commission Meeting, downtown.
This Amendment gives far greater protections, with clearer language, than ever
before – for animals who live outside and are too-often seriously neglected.
These animals have been suffering from freezing cold, burning sun, cramped
quarters, thirst, starvation, injury and disease.
But we’re ready to turn things around
The proposed new Amendment to the Bernalillo County Animal Ordinance addresses
many of the above unfortunate conditions now, and works to prevent them in the
future !!!
The New Amendment is Relevant to All Animal-Caring People throughout the State
… and Beyond!
Protective laws and policy enacted for animals of Bernalillo County can make
their way to other areas around New Mexico and elsewhere. Good things catch
on.
We need two things for this Amendment to become law:
1. Your phone calls and e-mails to county commissioners asking them to
please pass the new Animal Amendment. Phone calls and e-mails need to start
now and go all week through Monday and next Tuesday (April 12) a.m.
(Highlights and talking points from the Amendment will be listed a bit later.)
2. Your attendance and that of your friends and family -- if possible --
at the County Commission Meeting : Tuesday, April 12th, 5 pm. Commissioners
will be voting. No need for you to speak. Your presence in the auditorium is
your voice for the animals. J (Exact location and driving directions will
follow at the very end of this message.)
Your Phone Calls and E-mails Are Vital
Please call and e-mail the county commissioners listed below. Polite short
calls and e-mails are all that is needed! Huge numbers are important !!!
We have great momentum in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County and in areas
throughout New Mexico for humane treatment of animals! We hope all
animal-caring people will ask each county commissioner to pass the new
Amendment into law. Almost always, an office assistant or answering machine
will take your call. For calls made after hours or on weekends, just leave
your message on the answering machine.
Important Points for Sending Effective E-mails so that YOUR Voice is Heard
For e-mails, please send one individually to each of the five commissioners
listed below. You can write the same e-mail to each commissioner, and please
put the one commissioner’s name in the salutation, as in “Dear Commissioner
Smith.” And of course, there will be only one commissioner’s e-mail address in
the “to box.”
Although it takes just a little longer to send one message a few times, it’s
well-worth the effort. It’s more personal, and can make a big difference in
the attention your e-mail gets from each commissioner!
Please put a short title in your subject line that immediately conveys the
message that you are in favor of animal welfare or of the Animal Amendment.
(They both mean that you support humane treatment.)
In this way, if commissioners don’t have time to read your entire message, they
will know from your subject line what you are asking them to do.
Examples of Short Titles in Subject Lines:
*Please Pass Animal Amendment* Please Help Animals* Keep Animals Safe*
YES for Animal Amendment* Animals Need Protection* Help Our Animals* Be
Kind to Animals* Vote YES for Animals* Protect Our Animals* Help Needy
Animals* Animals Need Care* Animal Amendment is Great!*
You get the idea. You can use any of the above titles or come up with your own
words.
When you write your message in your e-mail, you can keep it quite short if you
wish. Please put your main idea in the first one or two sentences – in case
the commissioner has no time to read the rest. Please remember to ask the
commissioner to vote yes or to pass the Animal Amendment. It’s always nice to
thank them for their service to the county, too.
It’s beneficial that our messages sound a bit individualized and not sound as
if they were all copied from the same source. Please use your own words, if
possible.
Further down you will see some key points (highlights) that are in the
amendment. If you wish, you might choose one, two or three points that you
particularly like, and mention them in your e-mail. Please choose from the end
and middle of the “Highlights” section, as well as from the beginning, or use
your own ideas. In this way our e-mails will be varied.
The Attachment
If you would like detailed information about the Amendment, we are including an
attachment which has the entire Amendment with all its expanded protective
language. Changes in language have been underlined. There is no pressing need
for you to go through the entire Amendment now, unless you wish to. We have
summarized some of the main points in the highlights section.
By the way, there are still a few spots in the Amendment that need a bit of
“tweaking.” We will leave those to the newly-formed animal ordinance review
committee to be addressed in the future. Right now we are supremely happy and
appreciative for the many major clarifications and improvements in the
Amendment -- that will greatly benefit the countless neglected “backyard
animals” that have thus far been forgotten.
Our deep thanks go to our wonderful volunteer, Jeanne Szalay, for her extensive
research, review, and commitment to this amendment.
A Few Highlights from the Amendment
(These are only general ideas. The actual Amendment has specific
language.)
· No more chains to be used as tethers! Dogs on trolleys to be tethered
only with coated cable -- very light and comfortable when compared to chains!
· No unspayed female dogs on trolleys unless in the presence of their
owner.
· All dog collars shall allow insertion of two fingers – to assure
proper fit and prevent collars from becoming embedded in dog’s skin.
· All animals shall have constant access to unfrozen potable water.
· Water shall be provided in a manner that prevents the container from
being overturned.
· Travel crates, barrels or flimsy structures cannot be used as outside
shelter for dogs. Only weather- proof, leak- proof dog houses, insulated from
the cold ground, and with bedding as appropriate, shall be used.
· Proper shade and shelter shall be available for all companion
animals, and for livestock confined to one acre or less.
· Animals confined together shall have adequate space to move freely and
lie down without coming into contact with each other or the sides of the
enclosure.
· When animals show signs of serious injury, disease or starvation, the
owner shall provide veterinary care in a timely manner.
There are many additional improvements that are contained in the new Amendment.
Please feel free to also use ideas that came from the attached Amendment -- as
talking points in e-mails to the commissioners.
Though the above requirements may seem to be “plain old common sense” to most
caring people, it’s shocking to see what actually happens in the real world
where animals living outside are too-often severely neglected. Therefore, we
have needed language in the ordinance to set clear and enforceable standards.
Please contact each commissioner with a phone call and an individual e-mail.
Let’s keep those emails coming and those phones ringing off the hook.

Abeni is in NEED of some tender loving care! This approximately one year old, female cat has a wound about the size of a quarter on her inner, right front leg. Abeni has been treated by a veterinarian but after a month in the Shelter, she has not been able to heal. Hopefully, a home environment will help Abeni heal. No doubt, this playful, affectionate girl will surely bring a smile to your face on a daily basis. A foster is not responsible for any additional vet care or medications needed by Abeni. She really just needs a nurturing environment to heal. Please contact Tina at 305-479-3618.

Greetings All!! Usually, my messages are about animals in need but in this case, a family that is a true friend to the animals, needs our help. In the wee hours of Sunday morning, a freak tornado ripped through the quiet valley of Guadalupita, just north of Las Vegas. The ONLY casualty of these gale force winds was the roof off the home of Ed and James. While Ed, James, their own dogs, ducks, and geese, as well as foster puppies, escaped any injury, the damage is significant. In 2010, OVER 600 puppies and countless dogs received shelter, comfort and safety with Ed and James. Their hearts and home are ALWAYS open to an animal in need. They need our help now, and I believe, we are the kind of community that responds when someone is in need. Please contact me if you are able to help in any way. Building materials, skilled workers, and donations are needed. Thank you for supporting your community! Tina 305-479-3618

This week is National Volunteer Week and I am celebrating YOU!!!!! Volunteers are the lifeline to making the difference in the life of an animal. Whether it's fostering, transport, fundraising, or working spay/neuter clinics each of you is always ready to meet the needs of the day. For those of you unable to volunteer, your donations are greatly appreciated. Funding is a great alternative for those who aren't able to participate hands on. For those of you who would like to participate but aren't sure how, be creative. Think of the skills you can offer and it's very likely we can use your talents. Please Help - Lost Dogs El Carmon Area near Mora The two missing dogs are English setters about 45 lbs. The female (mom) is white with orange and the male (7 month old puppy) is black and white. They have been missing for 2 nights. They went missing in the El Carmen area not too far from where it intersects with El Oro road. Please call Pat Rose if you should see them at 575-387-6347. Thanks for any help you can give
The Santa Fe Animal Shelter Mobile Clinic will be offering vaccinations and MICROCHIPPING for dogs and cats from noon to 3:00 p.m., Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 24, 25, 26 at West Las Vegas Middle School gym. Avid microchipping will be offered at a discounted cost of $16.

Otis is a 4.5 year old, Red Bone Hound/Lab Mix. He spent the first two years of his life training with Assistance Dogs Of The West. Otis completed his training and was placed but the match was not good. One of Otis' trainers adopted him and is his current human. She is experiencing some life changes and is unable to keep Otis. She is absolutely heartbroken over this and can't say enough good things about him. One of the reasons Otis did not do well in his placement is because he barks at new dogs. He does not bark at known dogs but is very vocal when encountering new ones. This should not be mistaken for aggression. He is a very loving and playful boy and grew up with many dogs and cats as part of his training. I had the pleasure of spending some time with Otis and must agree with his current owner, he is great. Otis is extremely affectionate and will be devoted to his human companion. If you live in Las Vegas, Otis probably looks familiar to you. He has quite the following of local admirers! If you are interested in meeting Otis, please call SOON, time is of the essence!!!! Magee: 505-454-3938/505-652-6660 Tina: 305-479-3618 or <email obscured>

Ok, sending out a plea to all animal people who might either have a place to rent or know of someone who does! I am in URGENT need of a place to rent that will allow pets!!!!!! Don't really care what the place looks like, needs to be in the Las Vegas area - within 20 miles... There is two adult women and teenager, no smoking-drinking-drugs. We have 4 outdoor dogs and two little indoor/outdoor dogs, and a few indoor/outdoor cats that are very well behaved. A place with room for horses would be wonderful but if not I am looking for a pasture to rent for 5 horses. Unfortunately I CAN'T afford more then $700 at the most for the moment but maybe could work something out if needed? I do housesitting, will clean barns and so on. Hot Weather Tips http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/pet-care-tips/hot-weather-tips.aspx We all love spending the long, sunny days of summer outdoors with our furry companions, but being overeager in hot weather can spell danger, warn ASPCA experts. "Even the healthiest pets can suffer from dehydration, heat stroke and sunburn if overexposed to the heat," says Dr. Lila Miller, ASPCA Vice President of Veterinary Outreach, "and heat stroke can be fatal if not treated promptly." Take these simple precautions, provided by ASPCA experts, to help prevent your pet from overheating. And if you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke, get help from your veterinarian immediately. Visit the Vet A visit to the veterinarian for a spring or early summer check-up is a must. Make sure your pets get tested forheartworm if they aren't on year-round preventive medication. Do parasites bug your animal companions? Ask your doctor to recommend a safe flea and tick control program. Made in the Shade Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it's hot outdoors. Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful to notover-exercise them, and keep them indoors when it's extremely hot. Know the Warning Signs According to Dr. Lila Miller, ASPCA Vice President of Veterinary Outreach, "symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. They can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees." Animals with flat faces, like Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible. No Parking! Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. "On a hot day, a parked car can become a furnace in no time-even with the windows open-which could lead to fatal heat stroke," says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine at ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. Also, leaving pets unattended in cars in extreme weather is illegal in several states. Make a Safe Splash Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool-not all dogs are good swimmers. Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from his fur, and try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals that could cause stomach upset. Screen Test "During warmer months, the ASPCA sees an increase in injured animals as a result of High-Rise Syndrome, which occurs when pets-mostly cats-fall out of windows or doors and are seriously or fatally injured," says Dr. Murray. "Pet owners need to know that this is completely preventable if they take simple precautions." Keep all unscreened windows or doors in your home closed and make sure adjustable screens are tightly secured. Summer Style Giving your dog a lightweight summer haircut helps prevent overheating. Shave down to a one-inch length, never to the skin, so your dog still has some protection from the sun. Brushing cats more often than usual can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. As far as skin care, be sure that any sunscreen or insect repellent product you use on your pets is labeled specifically for use on animals. Street Smarts When the temperature is very high, don't let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close the ground, your pooch's body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum. Avoid Chemicals Commonly used flea and tick products, rodenticides (mouse and rat baits), and lawn and garden insecticides can be harmful to cats and dogs if ingested, so keep them out of reach. When walking your dog, steer clear of areas that you suspect have been sprayed with insecticides or other chemicals. Keep citronella candles, oil products and insect coils out of pets' reach as well. Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 if you suspect your animal has ingested a poisonous substance. Party Animals Taking Fido to a backyard barbeque or party? Remember that the food and drink offered to guests may be poisonous to pets. "Keep alcoholic beverages away from pets, as they can cause intoxication, depression and comas," says Dr. Steven Hansen, ASPCA Senior Vice President of Animal Health Services. "Similarly, remember that the snacks enjoyed by your human friends should not be a treat for your pet; any change of diet, even for one meal, may give your dog or cat severe digestive ailments. Avoid raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and products with the sweetener xylitol." Fireworks Aren't Very Pet-riotic Please leave pets at home when you head out to Fourth of July celebrations, and never use fireworks around pets. "Exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns or trauma to curious pets, and even unused fireworks can be hazardous," says Dr. Hansen. "Many types of fireworks contain potentially toxic substances such as potassium nitrate, copper, chlorates, arsenic and other heavy metals." Download the ASPCA's PetWeather iPhone and Android App for Free The ASPCA's PetWeather App lets you know at a glance what kind of weather your furry friend can expect for your location, and will alert you if weather conditions make it uncomfortable or even dangerous for your pets to be outside.

1. Don't bring your pet to a fireworks display. The "boom" of the fireworks sounds loud to the human ear. Imagine how loud it sounds to your dog, who can hear sounds up to 60,000 cycles per second -- that's three times greater than the human ear can even register. 2. Keep a collar and ID tag on your pet at all times. Make sure the tag contains legible and up-to-date information. To lessen the chance that a dog slips his collar, be sure you can put no more than two fingers between the collar and the pet's neck. Cats should wear breakaway collars, and as a backup it's advised that they receive a microchip ID implant from a veterinarian. Indoor/outdoor cats are recommended to be brought indoors on the 3rd and to remain inside till the 5th. This is because fireworks are legal to buy in many areas and often individuals set them off on more than one evening during the holiday week. Two forms of ID are always best when it comes to protecting your pet. If an individual finds your pet, the first thing he or she will look for is an ID tag. If your pet is taken to a shelter, it will be scanned for an ID chip upon admittance 3. Keep your pet indoors in a cool, quiet room. The windows should be closed and the shades or curtains pulled. Often the sound of soft music or the low rumble of a television will help to calm your pet. Remember to leave a light on for your pet too. These things will help the animal feel safe and secure. 4. Don't leave your pet outside in the yard on a leash or a chain. Many animals get tangled up in their attempts to flee and end up injuring themselves. And dogs often escape their yards and get lost. 5. If you find an animal that is lost, take it to your local animal shelter right away. The quicker you do this, the sooner the frantic owner will be reunited with his or her beloved pet. 6. Remember that cooked bones are dangerous and can splinter. If you let your dog enjoy a part of a summer barbeque, make sure he or she gets only boneless meat. Other dangers include corn cobs and wooden shish-ka-bob skewers which can be choking hazards. Onions, alcohol, and chocolate can be toxic for dogs.

http://apnm.org/mailbox/june27_11.html APNM Coordinates Free Training for NM Therapists and Law Enforcement Officers Dates Scheduled in August and September A recent government grant provided through the NM Department of Public Safety (DPS) enabled about 60 therapists, social workers, and counselors from the central and northern regions of New Mexico to attend six days of workshops on The AniCare Approach to Treatment and Counseling for Animal Abuse Offenders. AniCare emphasizes the client’s need to acknowledge accountability and develop a stronger sense of respect and empathy toward others. This approach has been successful in breaking the cycle of violence that usually begins with cruelty toward animals and can escalate to more violence toward animals as well as people. In April-May, APNM coordinated Albuquerque and Santa Fe workshops facilitated by Ken Shapiro, Ph.D., Director of the Animals & Society Institute (ASI), and other Certified AniCare Trainers, to increase the number of trained AniCare therapists in the state. New Mexico’s Animal Cruelty statute allows judges to order AniCare therapy for those who are convicted of animal cruelty. APNM continues to work with ASI to notify New Mexico courts and others about this training and the list of trained therapists available for court referrals. One more round of AniCare Workshops will run Sept. 9-11, 2011 in Las Cruces. For information or to register, see our website atwww.nmanicare.com. These workshops are available to all mental health professionals who provide counseling to children, adolescents, and/or adults who are at-risk, have been referred for evaluation, or have been convicted of animal cruelty. Six (6) CEUs per day are approved by the licensing boards for therapists, social workers, occupational therapists and psychologist Seven Locations Statewide for Law Enforcement Training Also sponsored by DPS, a one-day training on Animal Cruelty Investigations for law enforcement officers and animal control officers is being coordinated by APNM throughout the state. This training will provide a comprehensive overview on Investigating Animal Cruelty and Neglect in New Mexico. Eric Sakach, Senior Law Enforcement Specialist for The Humane Society of The Unites States, will provide the training this August in Albuquerque, Aztec, Raton, Santa Fe, Deming, Las Cruces, and Roswell. All law enforcement officers are encouraged to attend this free training and can receive up to eight (8) Advanced Training Credits. Any attorneys who prosecute animal cruelty cases at the state, local, or county level are also welcome to attend. Law enforcement officers often witness first-hand the link between animal cruelty and other forms of violence and criminality in our communities. Typically, a dog-fighting or animal hoarding raid turns up illegal drugs and weapons and often reveals children and families in abusive and dangerous situations. Seewww.NMInvestigatesCruelty.com for additional information and online registration. Please pass along this information to anyone who might be interested in attending.

Is anyone willing to foster puppies from tomorrow, Friday, July 22nd through Thursday, July 28? A foster home is urgently needed for a litter of 7. It is one week and the joy they will bring is really priceless! Please, please open your heart and your home for one week to this litter in need. Thank you so much! Tina 305-479-3618
A foster home is urgently needed for approximately one week! A male, Hound is currently in boarding and scheduled for transport to rescue in Colorado. He really needs some time out of boarding before he goes to his rescue placement. Can you give this guy some love for one week? Thanks! 505-264-3830 or <email obscured>
As I perform my usual scramble for foster homes, I wanted to take a moment to thank the fosters we already have. Fosters are the unseen, unsung heroes of rescue. Their work occurs quietly, in the confines of their home: they bottle feed an orphaned litter every two hours; they scoop the poop of a dog or cat that is not their own and will move on in a few days or few weeks; they use their own pack to help build confidence and teach socialization to a traumatized dog; they drive across the state to get their charges one step closer to a FURever home. These women and men take in an animal when it is most in need. They open their hearts to these puppies and kittens, even though they know they will only be with them for a short period of time. Most importantly, they know their greatest gift is moving them along when they're ready. They have all failed fostering at some point and brought one of those furry creatures into their home forever. Each time they load a crate for transport, they know they serve a greater good and quickly prepare for the next refugee. Thank you foster moms and dads. Each one of you makes rescue possible. If you're not able to foster but would like to support this work, we are always in need of puppy and kitten food, wet and dry. You can also make a monetary donation at https://www.networkforgood.org/donation/ExpressDonation.aspx?ORGID2=263140054. Thanks for making a difference in the life of an animal in need.
The AWC will once again have a booth at the Rough Rider Motorcycle Rally! We will have several amazing raffles and lots of information about animal issues and opportunities in Las Vegas. In addition, you will be able to pre-purchase tickets to THE canine/human event of the year!! On August 19th, the AWC invites you to join us at the Plaza Hotel for Tux & Tails, an event to include live music, best-dressed dog competition, silent and live auctions, the drawing for the Santa Rosalia raffle and much, much more! AND, we need volunteers!!!! We need your help to make this booth just as successful as the 4th of July booth. Let us know when you can be there! For questions or additional information, please contact 505-264-3830 or <email obscured>.

'Mother' is a long-haired, tiger striped female, 7+ years old, brown nose and a feathery tail, who went missing Friday night, July 29th. She was let outside out about 11:00 p.m., and that is the last time she was seen. She typically frequents the areas adjacent to Johnny's Kitchen but doesn't ever cross Grand Ave., and sometimes the alley from 406 National up to Columbia. She is street savvy, and would likely not allow anyone to approach too close to her or to be picked up. She may have become stressed by the motorcycle traffic and either ran out of her range or hid in a neighborhood structure and has become trapped. It would be helpful if people living in the Carnegie Library neighborhood who have garages and other structures could check these places for a possible trapped cat. Please contact 454-8275 with any information.

A foster home(s) is needed for six puppies for three days, Monday through Thursday. Enjoy the fun and cuddly cuteness of puppies for just three days and then send them on their way. The puppies will benefit from the socialization and you will see your blood pressure drop, cholesterol lower, and your bank account increase (these findings have not been proven!). You won't regret it!

Remember Buddy & Suzie the two starving horsesthat were dumped on the mesa to die. They are thriving and gainingweight. Suzie only has about another 100 poundsand will be back to her normal healthy weight,Buddy is taking a little longer because of his age, estimated to be around 30. Suzie was too busygrazing to visit much. Buddy is as sweet and lovingas ever. He came right up to greet me and get someloving. He loves his routine. When I got there, he haddecided it was time to go to the barn to get ready for dinner. He waits at the barn door and then goes right to his stall, nohalter and lead rope needed. DreamCatcher Equine Rescue is an amazing place for thesehorses. Julie does a fabulous job with all the horses in hercare. The horses are very lucky. Judy Barnes

Holmes is approximately two years old. He was trapped at about three months as part of a feral trap-neuter-release program, and became 99% socialized. He's not terribly interested in other people, but is very curious about other cats. He's now an indoor only cat, but on Saturday morning (October 8), he escaped from his home near the intersection of 12th and San Francisco. He's all black with yellow eyes and a tipped left ear. Please contact 505-652-4366 or <email obscured> with any information! Thank you!

Thanksgiving is a day to reflect on the abundance in our lives. What better way to honor that abundance than to share it? There are six homeless dogs who would love to share some time with you on Thanksgiving. After enjoying your friends, family and a delicious meal, take a leisurely drive over to the Braemarr Boarding Facility located just north of Santa Fe. You can enjoy a walk with a rambunctious Heeler or a snuggle with a gentle Pittie. They won't know it's Thanksgiving but they will know, you were there. 2:00 - 4:00 Braemarr Boarding Kennel 906-B Old Las Vegas Highway Exit 294 Santa Fe, NM 87505
