Hello all....
I do not know if any of you share my concerns over pesticide and herbicide
use, but last week we saw and smelled the DOT spray trucks jetting a
broadleaf herbicide on the road sides. We talked to them and found out they
are spaying a product called Vanquish. We called their supervisor, Barbara
Sanchez in Las Vegas (505-454-3600) and told her that we did not want any
spray occurring on or near our land. She was unaware of any policy or
procedure, and had no idea what they were doing out here....Also the driver
refused to admit that they were spraying anything on our frontage road. I
stood in the garden and watched as they drove 10 miles per hour down the
road with liquid spray coming form the tank pipes and 20 secs later a
chemical smell wafting through the air. I also talked with a girl from
Dilia and she said that they are not supposed to be spraying on 386 because
of the open range and cattle....Lots of confusion and disinformation. Kind
of scary when it has to do with people unthinkingly spraying poisons on our
lands.
Also we heard from our neighbour that there are several people in Dilia
petitioning the Guadalupe County Commissioner to implement a large scale
spray operation for grasshopper control.
I think it is very important that we all make sure these activities are not
occurring in our front yards. Be proactive and tell all Public Officials
that these unwarranted, unsupervised, and badly managed acts of negligence
will not be tolerated. There are much better ways to deal with weeds and
insect invasions. Lining the pockets of big chemical companies does not
solve the problems we face. It only makes them richer, us poorer, and the
land weaker.
thanks and stay well

Hi, Jenn-
I share your concerns. This is flat wrong.
In addition to agricultural concerns, herbicides and pesticides persist,
cycle about, and eventually poison us all.
And apart from that, insecticides, while they will kill the
grasshoppers, will also kill any insect predators, and the predatory
insects take longer to rebound than aphids, grasshoppers, etc, which
means that the problem will come back, soon, and worse, requiring more
spraying, and so on.
So foolish!
The substance which you report being sprayed is not nice stuff.
Vanquish's active ingredient is Dicamba; it is toxic, and believed to
cause birth defects. Read about it here-

Yes, very problematic as far as the greater issue...creating more problems
than solutions. But what I also want everyone to know, is that even if some
official tells you that they are using pesticides and herbicides in
prescribed, controlled, safe, and minimized ways, question them.
What I saw directly violates the manufacturer's own label as far as
prescribed use: "For selective broadleaf weed and brush control on *noncrop
lands* in the following uses:.....*non-irrigated ditchbanks*." Well this
valley is planted with lots of crop land and the road side they were
spraying is also an acequia ditchbank.
best,

It's amazing what lengths pesticide companies, especially the big beast
Monsanto use to poison us. You would think folks have consciousness, yet how
many understand the dire effects to the eco-system from doing this?
I would like to mention Howard Lyman, the "Mad Cowboy" that upstaged the
cattleman's association on Oprah regarding mad cow disease, and ramifications
unless we reign in malpractice in the fields and among our livestock.
When I was raised on and around farms in Ohio, farmers never thought twice
about accepting what was "spoon fed" to them from the big boys. No one saved
the seeds because "hybrids were better" [according to the biased media], and
along with DDT it took care of everything, so the harvest looked good. We
didn't have reports back then that worms in apples and on corn means it's not
sprayed, or grown organic, so it will obviously taste better, as well as having
higher nutrient value.
What Howard brought out in his talks, along with "Jacob Crutzfelds Disease"
[aka: mad cow], was how he received a college education in "agri-business",
taught how to use chemicals, poisons, etc. to increase yield... and he built
his inventory up to 30,000 acres along with 6,000 head of cows... but he
killed his soil doing it, and almost died himself. The dirt was parched and
devoid of life, no worms, birds were dying, and of course - no insects,
including bees to pollinate.
We are just little pebbles in a big pond. Yet when we pass reasonable ideas
out like this, we help each other avoid mistakes of the past.
There has to be a way of getting through to folks that spread sheets showing
profit do not always benefit us as a society. When will people learn?
For those not familiar: Watch "The Future of Food", a great DVD about the
ramifications of genetic modification. If you can't find a copy, buy one, and
share it with your friends. Go to:
https://www.futureoffoodstore.com/Catalog/tabid/1570/CategoryID/7/List/1/Level/a/productid/382/Default.aspx
The educational version is equivalent of a college education, but scroll down
for the less expensive home-viewing edition, I think $25.
When will people get it? The answer is up to them. Folks are already dying
from not listening, so it might not be easy to train "numb skulls" addicted to
all "their drugs", chemicals and poisons.
If people only knew and followed the truth...
LOL, Dennis
