Dear Local Issues Forum,
The mission of Casa de Cultura (Casa) is to create a cultural environment
for the citizens of Las Vegas, New Mexico and similar communities in northern
N.M. We aspire to foster trust and cohesion among diverse ethnic and social
groups by participation in educational and Cultura activities
Inherent to our efforts: How do we use our culture to organize our people for
community development? How can we concertize youth to work on community issues
and projects? When children are motivated they can move the community because
they teach their friends and families. It is for this reason that our cultural
arts and education program are hands on activities. As part of our Youth
Development Through the Arts Program, Casa has initiated a three step mural
project.
Step one: The creation of a city wide application of mini-murals by one or two
youth artists under the supervision of an in-house adult artist who will direct
the students in: Mural design, application, and in verbally articulating the
meaning of the piece to interested parties. Four mini-murals are in the
planning stage as we speak. These will be painted on previously approved
spaces. Our hope is that youth at all age-levels will produce mini-murals with
the objective of inspiring interest for the next two stages of mural painting.
Step two: We shall start a mural at El Centro Family Health, 8th St., Las
Vegas. With the approval of El Centro management, a team of Casa youth
composed of a master muralist; two college art students and eight high school
art students will design and paint a 48’ interior mural at the health center.
In addition to the skills objectives, as in step one, we hope to develop a
group of mentor-tutors who will assist younger children in painting school and
community murals.
Step three: A hallway at Luis Armijo Elementary School, the wall at the site
of the old Safeway parking lot opposite the Spic n Span Restaurant and a
building on Bridge St. are the next in line. The City of Las Vegas, mural is
expected to our signature piece. The title, Somos Un Pueblo- We Are One
Community, will involve youth from every school in Las Vegas, including Luna CC
and Highlands University with the college and high school students acting as
mentor tutors. This piece will be under the direction of muralist Noel
Marquez, this year named visual artist of the year for New Mexico by Governor
Richardson,
The mural will extend 180’ and the final design will be determined by a
consensus of the artists and community people.
The goals of the project are:
.The beautification of Las Vegas through the depiction of visual history.
•The development of self esteem as a factor in youth development.
•The creation of a cooperative approach among youth as a strategy in group
harmony,
•The acquisitions of artistic skills that can be transferred to other projects
and to other students.
We are seeking youth of high school age who are interested in participating
with other liked minded students in achieving our objectives.
In the near future, we shall be inviting the adult community to learn mural
techniques and participate with youth in their development.
