Greetings: When was your Carnegie Library built? Are there any plans to expand or replace it? Durango just moved from our Carnegie to a beautiful new building along the Animas River. I miss the old library though. It was right downtown so I could stop by there when I ran my other errands. I joked for years that I started to attend First Presbyterian Church because it was across the alley from the library. In any case, the new library is now slightly farther from my house, but I probably get there about 1/3 as often as I did the old one.

The original grant of $10,00 to build the Las vegas Carnegie Library came in March 1902 according to this wikipedia page< http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Carnegie_libraries_in_New_Mexico> As far as any plans to expand or replace it, I doubt that is likely to happen. It is owned by the city and is in very poor condition due to neglect. There are several other libraries here at the local Highland University and at the United World College near here. It is one of the 900+ buildings located in Las Vegas that are listed on the National Historical Register. Here is the general information page < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnegie_library> Also some information on your Carnegie Library in Durango, CO that was built in 1906. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Carnegie_libraries_in_Colorado

Thanks so much for your help and support Robert! I'm sure they miss you at the library Mick! I found this info in library literature: The Carnegie Public Library was built with a gift of $10,000 from the Andrew Carnegie fund with the guarantee of $1,000 from the City to maintain it. It opened to the public in August 1904. The building was placed on the State Register of Cultural Properties in 1974 and on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It is now supported almost exclusively by the City of Las Vegas. I don't believe there are any plans to expand or re-locate but we are constantly seeking funds to repair and maintain. Thanks for your interest! Martina C. Holguin
Hi Martina, Robert, and Mick, I live in Mora County, but use Carnegie Library regularly. Have any of you looked at the recent report from the City of LV, containing the budget for 2010? I did, and was absolutely appalled, though not terribly surprised, that the budget for the library is only about 0.5% of the total city budget. With the building in such bad shape, and the collection in even worse shape, I think it is a pressing need for all concerned to lobby the city for a larger share of funding. My lord, even the museum gets almost as much as the library! The library, the museum, the parks, animal control, and community development ALL TOGETHER receive only 2.5%. Meanwhile, the police department gets $250 for every man, woman and child in LV... Maybe a letter-writing campaign? I already have one drafted, c.c. the Optic. Aren't you just sick of the skewed priorities in this town?
Yes, Alima, underfunding is always a problem. The Friends of Carnegie Public Library is the support organization for Carnegie Library. An adult membership has a suggested donation of $5 and a child's membership, $1. Checks can be made payable to: Friends of the Las Vegas Carnegie Public Library and can be mailed to the library at 500 National Avenue or dropped by. We also greatly appreciate any volunteer hours. Our fundraising provides most of the children's programming, many technological and electronic updates as well as a wide variety of other programs and equipment. In addition, myself and several other Friends attended the City Budget Meeting on May 28, 2009 to express support and encourage an increase of the Library budget. Our annual Raffle will be coming up soon so please purchase a ticket and a chance to win some amazing art by local artists. Thanks for your support!

Grand Prize: Original Watercolor by Susan West Valued at over $500! Susan West moved to Las Vegas almost seventeen years ago after enjoying a successful art career in Los Angeles. Locally, Susan is known for her commercial walls in Charlie's Spic & Span Bakery & Cafe, Tome On The Range Bookstore and other locations about town including SPC Office Products and Dick's Liquor. Susan's work is highly enjoyable with soft, soothing color palettes, luxurious blooms, and magical flights of fancy.

After the grand prize drawing, the successive four winners are eligible to pick from the following beautiful, one-of-a kind pieces, each valued between $100 and $200: Gene Gurule is a native New Mexican encouraged to further his art talents by his mother at a very young age. Gene is most noted for his painting, photography and tinwork. His painting is done on sliced deer/elk antler. Geneâs tinwork is very unique. Although most tinwork is traditional in nature, his is very contemporary with a touch of traditional. Geneâs photography is generally comprised of Northern New Mexico scenes. Gene loves the colors and textures that are unique to New Mexico and his photography captures the past and uniqueness of the area.

After the grand prize drawing, the successive four winners are eligible to pick from the following beautiful, one-of-a kind pieces, each valued between $100 and $200: Michele and Dan Capaccio got into the art world by looking. Looking in museums, looking during travels and then, after looking, the art had to come out. This lime plaster fresco of Jesus was inspired by a recent trip through Italy. The views Michele and Dan Capaccio see, can best be summed up by the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, appreciating beauty in imperfections. Their plates and bowls could have been found on a hiking trip, a quiet walk through somewhere, stumbling upon, a piece of imperfect beauty.

The Friends of Carnegie Public Library would like to extend an enormous thank you to the citizens and business' of the City of Las Vegas for their overwhelming support of our annual raffle fundraiser. This year, we had five amazing art pieces, generously donated by local artists, that will each make a beautiful addition to the homes of our lucky winners. Tim Dodge will be taking home the grand prize, a gorgeous watercolor by Susan West, beautifully framed by Art & Stones. The remaining winners, Augustine Romero, Virginia Apodaca, and Patricia Smith will have their pick from pieces by Michelle and Dan Capaccio, Nancy Leippe, and Gene Gurule. The Friends of Carnegie Public Library would not be able to serve the Library without the support and generosity of the Las Vegas community. Thanks so much!
