We frequently hear that having the RNC here in St. Paul will be great exposure
for the city and that will, somehow, translate into longterm, economic benefit.
However, it appears that most visitors won't even realize they're in St. Paul.
The national media continues to believe that the convention is in Minneapolis
and their readers believe the same.
Witness the following from the comments to Frank Rich's column in the NY Times:
"The item that got me the most was with their convention in Minneapolis,
conventioneers will pass by (or nearby) the Sen. Larry Craig "Memorial" Mens'
Room. I can see it now... special reports from Letterman, Leno, Stewart,
Colbert, and O'Brian from the most famous men's room in American political
history."
Incidentally, I do hope someone places a suitable marker next to the bathroom
so convention goers are reminded they're passing (or perhaps even using) an
historic facility.
I keep thinking of Hubert Humphrey's funeral, which the national news reported as being at House of Hope church in Minneapolis. PPress reports http://www.twincities.com/news/ci_9362454?source=rss RNC host committee is unhappy that tax money will not be used to guarantee a good time for the elephants this fall. Sure hope Colorado was as stingy with the donkeys in Denver. The absolute gall of those who want subsidies for the rich while leaving a job-less parent raising a child at a sub-subsistence level of $437 per month in cash benefits (for max of 5 years) is so aggravating! City Council and Mayor and City Attorney and contractors - watch out - the RNC will surely be trying to stick us with the bill after their party!
What is really interesting is that the amount the planning committee requested was in the first budget bill and was vetoed by Pawlenty. They had money, although not all of it as part of the last budget and, evidently, the Governor's office was that interested in keeping it in the budget. So who should be blamed for the money not being there? Are there organized groups here for the RNC (other than the obvious
Republicans) Is there a list of them somewhere?
Paul Demko of the Minnesota Independent writes: "Here?s a list of permits issued: Families United for Troops and Their Mission (Nancy La Roche and Merrilee Carlson), September 1, Triangle Park ?Peace Island? picnic (Coleen and Ross Rowley), September 4, Harriet Island Park True Blue Minnesota (Andrew Hine), August 31 ? September 4, Triangle Park Ben Plunkett, September 1, 3 and 4, Hamm?s Plaza; September 1, Mears Park; August 31 and September 2, Ecolab Plaza Welfare Rights Committee (Deborah Konechne), September 1, Hamm?s Plaza Women Against Military Madness (Sarah Martin), September 1, Ecolab Plaza Poor People?s Economic Human Rights Campaign (Cheri Honkala), September 2, Mears Park There also will be the Labor Day event at Harriet Island, put together by SEIU. It doesn?t require a permit, according to the parks department, because it?s an annual event." (from http://minnesotaindependent.com/view/rnc-protests-16-park) More groups, such as Scholars For 9/11 Truth, are listed by Laura Yuen at http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/06/25/protestfactions/ Note that the Pro-War FUFTATM shares Triangle Park with the Anti-War TBM on Labor Day. I'll have to bring extra blueberry muffins that day. We (TBM) have also applied for a Harriet Island permit for 9/2 to 9/4. There is also an event at the Capitol on the 2nd called "Ripple Effect," put on by Substance (www.livewithsubstance.org) Lowertown should be hopping with arts and craftiness such as The UnConvention. Vets For Peace, The Boots Project, and other veterans groups will be very involved, too. Andrew M. Hine Left Bank
And are there still peddler permits available?
How would I go about getting a peddlers permit for the RNC
